To us living in the modern world, its a crazy thought but remember that in the ancient wuxia world, life was TOUGH! Without power, your family can be massacred or enslaved by more powerful people, you can be crippled or even castrated by your lord or enemies on a whim. Basically, there might be fates worse then castrating yourself if you don't have the power to defend yourself and your family.
