Typical DVDs are not going anywhere, consumers are still waiting for the war between Blu Ray and HD DVD to see who comes out the victor, many consumers are still not willing to pay the price for a Blu Ray or HD DVD player yet, because they know the prices will eventually drop and if one format loses than you will be stuck with 1 piece of junk. I have like over 1,000 DVD's between Chinese and American and I'm not going to be replacing them anytime soon, just look for any DVD player or HD DVD player or Blu Ray DVD player that will upconvert to 1080i or 1080p through HDMI cables and you should be good to go.

Besides, I have yet to see any TVB titles produced into Blu Ray or HD DVD format.

Blu Ray and HD DVD can only be used to it's full extent if you have an HD TV with a 1080p, and many new HD TV's are now offering more than 1 HDMI input, if you go to your local Best Buy or Circuit City you can see them on display, crystal clear picture.

In Toronto I have seen HD players going for as low as $500.00 and Blu-ray players for $750.00, a dual format player for $1500.00.

Can the posters from other locations post prices in their cities.
Just remember not all are the same, some can play CD's some can play other formats while others cannot.

Blu Ray is backed by Sony Pictures, Warner, Paramount, MGM, 20th Century Fox and
many others, I dont see much hope for HD-DVD.

HP, Dell, many other PC companies are getting Blu Ray.

Once computers start having Blu-Ray on their system. Microsoft (Windows OS) has to support Blu-Ray as well.

I don't know how good they are but just don't buy a Sony at this stage. They are the least compatible players we know if blu-ray or HD becomes more common they will have new types of discs like what happened with the dvd. As for the playstation I hope the new one is better than the old one. My brother has a playstation 2 which we use to play dvds on alot, after a short time it got kind of damaged. Takes longer to load than normal, have to reload cause it couldn't distinguish between a cd/dvd and a game disc, and lots of picture freezing are a few of the problems it has now.

Both the blu-ray and the HD have models that can play normal dvds. I wouldn't buy any of them now, too expensive, and useless if you don't have a HD TV.

I wonder how many people have bought new Plasma and LCD TVs [HD TV ready] without realizing it won't show HD TV without additional electronic?

well, i know before i buy my TV, but i think it's worth it

    1) it's got alot of input
    2) who buys tube tv these days?
    3) analog looks pretty crappy, but after a while u get used to it, AVI and DVD aren't much better but deffinitely better than regular analog cable broadcasting in 480i, my DVD player has HD upconverting but that does not help much.
    4) Dual Layer DVD (8GB+) content seems to be ok IMO
    5) it looks pretty dam cool in my bed room
    6) i can get some HD channel OTA, which is pretty good when i watch sports n stuff (most of the prime time stuff is in HD 720p)
    7) xbox, PS3, xbox 360 looks pretty good on it (i don't own all but i've "borrow" some from friends to test)
    8) the stuff i watch doesn't look 1/2 bad (no where near HD quality but in terms of regular analog it's 8/10, i still perfer the tube TV for analog stuff, but you can't have it all
    9) i can plug my PC in and the resolution isn't 1/2 bad (about the size of a regular 17" LCD), with my wireless keyboard/mouse i just lay in the bed instead of sitting on a chair
    10) it's getting cheaper now, i got my olevia 32" with QAM tuner for only 450 last month, that's almost the price of a tube TV, after all the moving i did in the last 5 years i think i better get an LCD cuzz the freaking 32" tube tv is gonna break my back sooner or later (i have 2 X 27" tube and let me tell you, the last time i carried that thing, left me a scar on my forearm).

i've heard of this..but i suspect people aren't taking good care of their dvd discs and just blame it on the PS2 for the problem.

I don't think you even need to buy any of these players. LG has just released a dual player that can play both HD and Blu-ray. So if i were you just get LG player instead since it can play both media. But 1st you need a LCD TV or better to see the affect of HD.
What you need is an HDTV.

Default Latest news in the format wars.

"Blockbuster Inc. will rent high-definition DVDs only in the Blu-ray format in 1,450 stores when it expands its high-def offerings next month, dealing a major blow to the rival HD DVD format.

The move, being announced Monday, could be the first step in resolving a format war that has kept confused consumers from rushing to buy new DVD players until they can determine which format will dominate the market.

Blockbuster has been renting both Blu-ray and HD DVD titles in 250 stores since late last year and found that consumers were choosing Blu-ray titles more than 70 percent of the time."

Not everywhere is the same. I wouldn't be surprised if behind closed doors, the Blu-ray consortium is paying Blockbuster for booting HD DVD. The BR gang has loads of money, much more so than Toshiba and gang.

    http://forums.zip.tv/topic.php?id=229

As between consumer preference for one or the other of HD DVD and Blu-ray over the other, really we can't see how any rentailer could leap to a conclusion that one has yet gained the upper hand amongst consumers. You can read Zip customer selection data either one of two ways:

    - Consumer chosse HD DVD over Blu-ray, 56% to 44% of rentals this month
    - Blu-ray has more momentum than HD DVD, since the gap back in January favoured HD over Blu-ray 62-38 versus today's 56-44

Both these statements are true. Each could be used as an argument by either side in attempting to declare victory.

In our view, this is not yet resolved, no matter how much you, we and Blockbuster all wish it was. So we plan to conntinue offering any and all titles in both hi-def formats as long as our customers want either of them.

Before you jump into conclusion, do yourself a favour and visit AVS Forum. I suggest anyone with A/V questions to visit the site. The people in there know these stuff and please, don't say that you like Bose or Monster Cable... You've been warned.

LOL if you're watching lots of movie, than the good move is just to just buy an MPEG4/Divx/XviD player and download the movies (xvid/divx), however if you're an ideallistic person, never know P2P and lots of money to throw away then I think you should buy both HD and Blu-Ray player bcoz not all DVD release will be released to both format.

The reason to go Blu-ray or HD DVD is to watch movies in high-definition. There are some HD movies on DiVX, but are you going to watch that on a tiny computer screen? Let's not also forget the higher sound quality from BD and HD. P2P movie downloads are for people who don't care about quality. Even with DVD, I prefer to buy them than to download from the net. When you download, you either get a an ISO for a single-layer DVD which means that the quality is lower than the original or it's a DiVX or XviD that I have to watch on my computer screen because my PC is not an HTPC.
