re: HXM, HG and YH's comic timing: You're def. right, xiaolong, about HXM looking a thousand times better in serious roles than comedic ones, for all that I find his offscreen persona sometimes juvenile. It's a funny thing I've noticed about many mainland actors, that they tend to be more comfortable in drama than in comedy (neither Gong Li nor ZZY, to take the most famous recent international exports as examples, excelled at the latter). Perhaps it's a bias in the academic acting schools there? History/tragedy is seen as more noble, where funny tends to get acquainted with the 小品 or 相聲 tradition and it's hard not to get typecast in that niche. I mean, look at Ge You, best actor winner at Cannes and he still gets seen as just a funny man. It's good to see HG getting some love for his comedic talents, something of a piece with his charming/witty weibo persona. Do you find YH less funny onscreen? I can't say either way as I haven't seen him do anything funny, though he is hilarious in real life, in a quite different, more sardonic way than HG..

I can't think of any Mainland actors with the same level of brilliant comic timing as Hongkongers Andy Lau and Tony Leung Chiu Wai in 1980s TVB. As you said in Mookie's blog, Tony Leung just became WXB onscreen and no one has ever reached even inches near his level of comic greatness. Hence when comparing HXM's YG and WXM performances to them, HXM tanked miserably. I thought Hu Ge (who was the runner-up for the YG role in ROCH06) would have made a far better YG - I can do without YG's dark undertones (which HXM was selected for) but I can't do without YG's comic side in the pre-16 years time. Among the new generation, the best comedic actors (in my opinion) are Jimmy Lin, Eddie Peng and Ariel Lin from Taiwan. I can't think of any Mainlanders as good as them. Hu Ge is the one Mainland actor who can achieve a decent level of comic timing. And I think Ma Tianyu has good potential. As for YH, he tried and stank as Si Jin (a guest role where he was suppose to act comedic but ended up looking ridiculous) in Miracle of Doctor Tao headlined by Adam Cheng - that was actually a major Mainland-Taiwan cross-straits production broadcasted on CCTV and Taiwan's FTV concurrently, but what's the use of being in high profile production if you stink in it? Sorry YH, but you just don't have a funny elastic face like your OTP Eddie, hence you look ridiculous trying to imitate his goofy cuteness. While known in this forum for his bad boy appeal, I can actually like YH in serious moralising good guy roles if they are well written (such as his young Qianlong in Prince's Study; whereas Lin Mufei in CtW was badly written plus he looked old and ugly there), but OMG he should stay far far away from comic roles.

It looks to me comic timing is a natural in-born talent and difficult to be trained for. E.g. Eddie and Ariel have no acting or any sort of formal performance training except in school plays (Jimmy did study drama and photography though). And the great classics like Andy Lau and Tony Leung were picked up from the streets back in the hey day of Chinese TV dramas in the 1980s.

Basically, Tonghua says she observed LSS closely on the 54-in big screen. The scenes with Ruoxi and Ruolan got her teary-eyed. She felt like LSS, if not 100% perfect in every shot, acted very well and was Ruoxi in bringing out her character and spirit, that of a "bright magnolia flower”. [Cheesy? Hey I'm just quoting...]
K recalled how hard the shoot was for her, what with the snow and little sleep. Skin acted up from the stress and she got hydropsy which made her even more stressed. Earlier on in the morning she'd cry in bed because she was so tired she couldn't get up , but later on she got so into the character that she didn't feel it as much, and after shooting closed she still couldn't forget Ruoxi [line from the novel "can't forget and can't let go": it's the one LSS put up on her weibo that so many people commented on, with the pic of the magnolia on the book].

Yes, looks like Ruoxi will be the breakthough role for her. First time I've heard serious praises of LSS' acting and from the author herself!

Yes, this is what I meant about her earlier style. It's still casual and not obviously "girly" (no fussy accoutrements like bows or trims or lace), but the braids around the head give her a young airy girlish look..

This was what I was trying to get at on my earlier posts about the way she dress for promos (wished she would wear something more suitable for her young age for these events). I thought she looked best during her LOCH and CP3 promos, girly yet classy....

I think LSS's outfit is actually quite fresh and girly at the Strange Hero promotion with the matching outfits, but in the Miu Miu way. It's the soft collar and the soft silhouette work of the blazer.

Agree with Dragon - this tomboy outfit at Strange Hero press event was more feminine and fluid than her recent ones. MTY has good fashion sense.
