Default Top 5 Tvb wuxia theme songs of all time

    1. The Romantic Swordsman (performed by Roman Tam) - It's practically the granddaddy of Tvb wuxia theme songs. Joseph Koo's beautiful music and James Wong's catchy tragic hero lyrics ensure its immortality and gave Roman Tam his singing Career.

    2. Legend of the Condor Heroes III, 1983 (performed by Jenny and Roman) - The most emotionally rousing and memorable song of the three LOCH sgements. Like they all say, the best is always saved for the last.
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=euMHF...elated&search=

    3. Smiling Pround Wanderer 1984 (Performed by Susanna Kwan and Johnny Yip) - Another wonderful collaboration between the Koo and Wong songwriting duo. The result? a theme that just hums with the romance and free spiritness of Jinyong's novel.
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wjgd71yTBvY

    4. Demi Gods and Semi Devils II the Adventures of Xu Zhu 1982 (Performed by Michael Kwan) - Part II's theme is IMO superior to part I for being more dramatic, action packed which is what a wuxia song is supposed to be.
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MQZ7WaesOHQ

    5. Book and Sword, Graditude and Revenge 1976 (performed by Adam Cheng) - No other song captures so perfectly the story's theme of the Han Chinese's anger and contempt as they attempt to overthrow the Manchu dynasty.

You know what's funny about this song is that although it was indeed very exciting and memorable, it sounded more like a rock 'n roll song than it did a wuxia theme tune. It was based around a very prominent rock 'n roll bass riff (almost boogie-woogie, like a 50s rock 'n roll song). There are also electric guitars all over the recording. It's much more "rock" than most wuxia theme tunes are.

personally I think the CCTV wuxia theme songs are a lot cooler than than TVB theme songs

I also think the CCTV intros have better scenes out of the serial

(of course ROCH 2006 is an exception)

I love this song! I also love the second themesong but can't seem to find it on any CD... It's not as sad, but is much more majestic.

    2. Legend of the Condor Heroes III, 1983 (performed by Jenny and Roman) - The most emotionally rousing and memorable song of the three LOCH sgements. Like they all say, the best is always saved for the last.

I personally liked this one the least of the three. The first was the best for me (2nd was good too, but had more of a lovesong feel) and really set the mood for an epic trilogy. Slow, stately, grand and both Roman and Jenny blended wonderfully (they did in all 3, but somehow with part 1 it just brings back a lot of memories).

    3. Smiling Pround Wanderer 1984 (Performed by Susanna Kwan and Johnny Yip) - Another wonderful collaboration between the Koo and Wong songwriting duo. The result? a theme that just hums with the romance and free spiritness of Jinyong's novel.

The brightest part of the serial, for sure. The flute and harp combo at the beginning also really set the mood to follow the theme of Liu Zhengfeng and Qu Yang's composition.

    4. Demi Gods and Semi Devils II the Adventures of Xu Zhu 1982 (Performed by Michael Kwan) - Part II's theme is IMO superior to part I for being more dramatic, action packed which is what a wuxia song is supposed to be.

While both were great songs (and the former was even used for TVB's tape rental themesong for many many years), in my opinion neither were outstanding (given the ridiculously high quality of music back then). I always found Book and Sword, while having good lyrics, a bit draggy. Maybe because the entire opening theme was done in slow motion, and watching the Red Flower society beat up Qing soldiers in slow motion for a whole song gets boring.

I'd add Adam Cheng's "Chor Lau Heung" to the list. A wonderful free-spirited song as well, with a very powerful chorus and Adam Cheng's typical strong voice. Adam's HSDS 79 was also good, but lacked the uplifting feel of CLH, and had a sad feel to it. One Sword starts off really beautifully, but drags a bit during the verses, while the subtheme, although very exciting and adrenaline pumping, doesn't quite have the epic feel of CLH.

The 5th song is hard to choose. There were so many wonderful songs out there, and even when TVB started churning out turdy serials like "Dooku Kaubai", "Linked Cities", "Man, Ghost, Fox" and even the aforementioned "Smiling Proud Wanderer", the music quality remained very very good. Really top-class songs for me would include DGSD 81's opening themesong "Liong Mong Yin Sui Lui", Flying Fox of Snowy Mountain by Lui Fong and Susanna Kwan, as well as Roman Tam's "Sword and Exquisiteness". I'm so so tempted to put down Adam's Luk Siu Fung (the main theme, not the Wudang Battle theme) but I think since I have only one more vote, and have already given Adam's Chor Lau Heung a vote, I'd have to give this one to Leslie Cheung's "Duke of Mount Deer". The cheerful, carefree upbeat song never fails to cheer me up and make me smile, and I think it's a worthy addition in contrast to all the other songs on the list.

My list hence agrees with yours 2/5, with the second changing to "Tit Huet Dan Sum", and the last two changing to "Chor Lau Heung" and "Luk Ding Kei". "Luk Siu Fung" misses out purely because I want to spread the vote across different singers.

Is Saga of the Lost Kingdom "Ying Dan Chuen Kei"? That's Anita Mui, really cool song!

Do you know where I can find All About Tin and Last Conquest on CD - did Derek and Loletta have their own albums or something? I've got the Last Conquest mp3 from somewhere, but nothing beats having the CD.

Did Liza sing a solo subtheme for "The new adventures of CLH"? I know the main theme is Roman, and there's one subtheme which was a duet between Lisa and Roman (which I really love), but I seem to remember Lisa having one as well, but can't for the life of me place it!

Yes she did. It's one of my all time favourite theme song. I searched long and hard for the song, but unfortunately I never found a full version. If anyone know where I can find it, I may get interested in TVB theme songs again.

Many of the mid-1980s wuxia soundtracks never got released on record for some reason. HSDS '86's main theme appears from time to time on compilation sets, but the subthemes were never released on an Anita Mui, Tony Leung, or TVB album or single.

oops...i meant anita mui. thanks for correcting.

i don't know where you can find the themesongs on cd since i only have the mp3 for both all about tin and the last conquest. since i'm not chinese, i have very little knowledge in what could have been released. however, as derek is/was a professional singer, he may have released a seperate cd. i'm not sre. so sorry.

yes, and liza did sing the solo subtheme. it has a very tragic feel to it, especially with the amazing instrumental in the beginning. alas, i can't even find the full mp3 for the subtheme. i only have a copy of the short bit that is played at the end of the episodes (about 1 minute long only), and sadly, it isn't too clear. but i'm just grateful for even having that as it seems impossible to find. maybe i can help you remember the song a bit. do you remember the ending where the king wanted to grant any wish to clh (and hinted at barbara yung's character hand in marriage as a possible gift), but clh only wanted the princess's hair ornament? then quickly we get a view of the garden scene where barbara yung approached clh and asked why he didn't want to marry her and the music began to play during this scene... i personally like this song the best in that series, and it fits perfectly in all unhappy love scenes.

I just watched that part - it was only an instrumental, but it was really nice. It's not that familiar as the duet though - is there a vocal version in the series?

On a side note, watching Mimi Kung so young and sweet made me feel really old.. =( Last I saw she was still really beautiful, but she looked so cute and innocent in CLH!!

Anyone remember in what series this song, 舊夢不須記 (Jiu Meng Bu Shun Ji) sung by Annabelle Lui was first played in? I heard it so many times when I was a child and may have heard it in a Gu Long adapted TV series. And later I heard it in many Taiwanese tv series i.e. the Young Zhang San Feng (with Kenny Ho) and it was played in the background as an instrumental in Justice Bao series too.

I don't think I'll ever get sick of the song.
