in the adaption, yang buhui got captured and the xuan ming elders used her to make yang xiao surrender. fan yao tried to save them and got killed by the xuan ming elders palms. he was trying to hack away the chains on a wagon cage yang xiao was stuck in. yang xiao then got mad and broke the damaged chains and used QKDNY to beat the xuan ming elders. they fled the battle as it was disadvantageous to them.

I don't remember him dying in the book. His last meaningful act in the story was to occupy one of the shaolin monks (one of the generation with first name "Kong") with a duel date so that ZWJ will have 1 less worrying opponent when trying to rescue Xie Xun.
uh.. in many tv adpatations it was shown as FY getting killed except in 2003
No, Fan Yao did not die in the book.Originally Posted by seeker010

I don't remember him dying in the HSDS86 adaptation either.

He didn't die, neither did Yang Xiao.
The only person that died was whitebrows (peacefully) - none of the 3 other guardians, or the 5 warriors died.
