Distinguishing the Asian Races

I have many caucasion friends who simply can't distinguish between all the Asian Races! Everyone is simply labeled as "Chinese"- japanese is another popular one. I don't want to be stereotypical, but, what sort of physical features do you use to distinguish each asian race from each other? Please give me just an overview description, I know they don't all describe every unique individual.

Skin color. Koreans, Japanese and Chinese girls tend to be light skinned. Thai, Laos, and Vietnamese are a little darker.

I can tell what language they're speaking.

What if they weren't speaking. Or if you couldn't tell the language apart (like many caucasions)? Any facial differences to note?

It is actually very difficult to tell them apart nowadays. Song Hye Kyo could pass as a Thai girl if she spoke Thai. Some Thai girls can pass as Chinese because more than 75% of the time their family is Chinese.

The double eyelid thing used to be a good one, but with so much surgery going on it's hard to tell.

Good point. Chinese are immigrating all over the globe.

I think I can distinguish japanese people maybe 70% of the time from other asians because they tend to have a more narrow face?

I got the average score 7/18! It told me I can't tell the difference.

The more I had to analyze each of those faces, the more I felt like I was being so stereotypical! My thought bubble would go something like this... "She's got thin eyebrows so she's japanese... He's got a square chin so he's Korean... He's not wearing punk clothing and looks very disciplined so he's chinese"

on some you can't tell, on some you can tell easy, just depending on the person, alot of vietnamese are chinese mix, it's hard to tell, thai is hard to tell too, actually alot of asian are hard to tell, japanese are a bit different, i can tell most of the time, korean is also hard to tell. The reason why you can distinguish them is because of the stuff they wear, if they wear the same stuff then it's game over, can't tell.

I got 9/18 ..it's hard cos these people look the same. that would make me Normal - I am ok.

wow....I like failed that face test...though the food test I got an 11/18...so I guess I recognize the food better than the faces =p

i can usually tell by the clothes they're wearing. mainland chinese, hong kongers, taiwanese, korean, and japanese all dress a little differently.

on the flip side, how many of us can tell the difference between irish, british, french, swedish, german, italian, scottish, welsh, norwegian, belgian, polish, etc.?
