Does anyone know about how long each episode is supposed to be originally?
In the 70s and 80s, TVB would get the actors to act out scenes which were not in the series just for the trailer purposes, so that scene you described was probably filmed just for the themesong, to illustrate that he'll get both girls in the end or something. Like that bit with CLH fighting Simon on the bridge at the end. That wasn't in the series either, I think.

It's too bad; it was a great scene.

The scene was very reminiscent of the teaser scene for LUK SIU FUNG II, wherein Sai Mun Chui Sheut (Wong Yeun Sun) dueled Yip Goo Sing (Adam Cheng). Like the LUK SIU FUNG teaser scene, this scene from the opening titles of CHOR LAU HEUNG '84 ended on a freeze frame of one of the two similarly-clad opponents in midair.

mmm. i didn't know that. if you didn't say so, i would've went back to look for that scene. but then again, megavideo sucks for its 72 mins policy.

ah i remember that fight on the bridge, and you're right. it wasn't in the series either. i was expecting it at the end, but they fought in the wilderness instead.

i wish the happy ending was a bit longer.

I found this on youtube (surprisingly, it wasn't pulled by TVB yet).

I see what you mean now. I was wondering about what you said (the Duel in the VCD set doesn't have its own themesong, it just uses the same one as Roc Kingdom, which, like this one, joins the Roc and Duel scenes together into one video). Yeah, that ending bit looked great, shame the vid was cut before the final pose.

The scene (even though only in the theme song) with Mimi Kung and the grapes and also the one with them behind the curtain bothered me because it makes it seem like CLH is interested in her. Maybe because I am such a fan of Miu and Barbara, so I don't want to imagine him with other girls It was strange to me though that sometimes he seemed flirty with Mimi's character even though he loved Siu Jung. Like the scene where he's staring at the gift Mimi gave him or the scene where they're about to climb down the mountain to find her teacher's body and he's smiling as she gets on his back.

I agree with you that I wish the happy ending was longer. He didn't seem very sad to leave Siu Jung at first, but at least it was a happy ending

Heh, it's Chor Lau Heung after all, you can't expect him to not like other girls. Mimi's character was pretty good and it would have been sad if he just shut her out after all that, really.

Some of us just have a hard time coping or thinking of CLH like he's a combination of Wai Siu Bo and James Bond.

    Isn't that what CLH is?

Not much Wai Siu Bo, but, he's definitely a James Bond and we know how many girls Jame Bond has.

Yes. Yes. If there's anything I've learned is...do not fall for men like Chor Lau Heung and Zhen Zhao. The former has too many girlfriends and the latter will choose honor and duty over you (and he can't have both his duty and love, sadly).

Same with Lu Xiaofeng. Part of the reason why I find it difficult to read beyond the Duel is because of his girlfriends. He starts off flirting in Golden Roc Kingdom with Shangguan Danfeng, who is actually Shangguan Feiyan, and if anyone she probably would have ended up with Hua Manliu, if she didn't die. Next came Xue Bing in Embroidery Bandit, but sadly she does not survive (although we only have Jin Jiuling's word for it, it's pretty much assumed that he told the truth and she was dead). Along the way he flirted with a few of the Red Shoe Organisation ladies, and one of them, Ouyang Qing, then follows him into the Duel. He's pretty much only got the one interest, although he doesn't quite show as much concern for her as he did Xue Bing. Nevertheless, you get the feel that she's his girlfriend now, and she doesn't die at the end of the Duel.

Then comes Silver Hook Casino, and it's mentioned in passing that Ouyang Qing is recovering from her injuries sustained in the Duel, and he goes about flirting with Fang Yuxiang, Ding Xiangyi, Chu Chu and although sadly (yes, sadly, I liked all three of them - Gu Long characterised them quite nicely and they all had some real charm and were good foils for Lu Xiaofeng) none of them survive the story, he doesn't go back to Ouyang Qing anymore at the end. Or even in the next story, when he's caught in bed with Sun Xiuqing and ends up being chased all the way to the Phantom Mansion by Ximen Chuixue, developing relationships with Ye Ling, Ye Xue and Flower Widow along the way. I didn't read the last two novels at all, but I don't think he gets back with Ouyang Qing at all, she just disappears. Same with Flower Widow and Ye Xue, both of whom survive the novel, I think, unlike in the serial.

At the end of Phoenix Dancing in the Nine Heavens he's with Sha Man, and I wouldn't be surprised that neither Ouyang Qing, Ye Xue, Flower Widow or Sha Man make it into the last novel.

Sha Man didn't appear at all in novel 7. Beef Soup has become his girlfriend.

I never watched CHOR LAU HEUNG '84 in its entirety. How much of it was based on the CLH novels, how much of it was made up by TVB, and how much of it overlapped with the generally better-known 1979 Adam Cheng TVB CHOR LAU HEUNG series?

1986's RETURN OF LUK SIU FUNG (with Alex Man) stole bits and parts from most of the post-DUEL LUK SIU FUNG novels (though never anything in its entirety) and overlapped slightly with the 1970s Damian Lau LUK SIU FUNG series in some parts. Is the same true of CLH '84?

The only real overlap with Adam's CLH was that they showed Wuhua, Water Matriarch (be still me heart) and Shi Guanyin all killed in duels with CLH at the beginning, although technically Adam didn't kill Water Matriarch and Shi Guanyin (Matriarch was killed by Wuhua and Jiangnan Yan while Shi Guanyin committed suicide after Adam beat her) - CLH never seemed the sort who would kill an opponent (although his final opponent was really quite despicable and scary, and I don't blame Adam for killing her). It's all short trailer scenes, like how Ximen kills Ye Gucheng at the beginning of Alex's LXF. The Alex version also borrowed heavily from Embroidery Bandit which was before the Duel, but that arc was never fleshed out in the Damian version anyway.

There's little continuity from Adam's CLH to Michael's, though. Su Rongrong died in Adam's version but reappears in CLH 84, although she's no longer a love interest, and just a smaller supporting role. One Dot Red lost his arm in Adam's version (thanks to Hu Tiehua's panic) and was ending up as an item with Qu Murong, but in CLH 84 One Dot Red has both arms, is happily married to a peasant girl, and there's no sign of Qu Murong at all. Song Tianer was pretty much broken and depressed at the end of Adam's version, but in 84 she's as jolly as usual (mainly because her sisters are still around). I can't remember what happened to Li Hongxiu in Adam's version, but in 84 she's alive and well and the three girls are happily gallavanting on the boat with Michael. There's probably more discrepancy, but I can't think of them. But no, the story doesn't really flow from Adam's version at all.

I've got Michael's CLH on VCD, and am dying to get Alex's LXF, but sadly there's no sign of it.

Geez, I knew there was a reason I never quite liked Gu Long's works much. True, lots of fun fighting scenes, mysteries and what not, but there's too many girlfriends for his characters. But is it just harmless flirting or is actual bed partnering involved? I guess characters like Luk Siu Fung and Chor Lau Heung never settled down, they were too busily going around jianghu and picking up girls along the way, huh? Is there a point for every girl to get killed off?

"I love you, but if you die, I'll continue loving you.....not...oh look another pretty girl....I love you too! Let me chase you until you get killed or die, and I'll promise I'll love you until I find another girl to love!"

I guess every James Bond-like character has to have his James Bond girls.

Ian, are all the girls different from each other or does some girls seem similar or a mixture of other girls after GL has used all the character patterns up?

As far as I can remember:-

    Shangguan Feiyan:-
Murdered Shangguan Danfeng and took her place, manipulating Lu Xiaofeng to help her and her cohorts in killing a couple of competitors and to steal a kingdom's treasure. She was beautiful, intelligent and ruthless, if a little lucky. Not afraid to get her hands dirty personally - she killed Yan Tieshan from behind, earning a rebuke and a warning from Ximen that he would kill her if she ever struck a man from behind again. She also threw the darts responsible for the death of Shi Xiuyun and the wounding of Sun Xiuqing, so her martial arts weren't that weak. At the end, just before she died, she had a conscience pang when Hua Manliu, despite being manipulated and betrayed by her, felt no animosity at all towards her and forgave her. If she hadn't died she would have probably have loved HML rather than LXF, though.

    Xue Bing:-
Quite a colourful, hot-headed and pampered character, not the cool, calculating type which most of the other girls are like. She joined LXF in his search for the Embroidery Bandit as she was well-versed in embroidery, and was trying to decipher from the work what kind of person the Embroidery Bandit was. Reasonably friendly and polite, with no understanding of Cantonese. She was abducted halfway through the book, and is never seen again, Jin Jiuling revealing with his dying breath that she was already dead.

    Ouyang Qing:-
A classy courtesan, 4th sister of the Red Shoe Organisation. She's intelligent and witty, with decent martial arts. Revealed to be still a virgin as she services eunuchs in the brothel. Fancied LXF after their encounter during the Embroidery Bandit arc, and together with the rest of the organisation led by their 1st sister Gongsun Daniang (who had some flirty bits with LXF too) were essential to LXF's solving of the Embroidery Bandit case. In the Duel she goes to Beijing to visit LXF, but is mistaken by the villains as having information which would implicate them, and so they ambush her, but she is saved by Ximen Chuixue and Sun Xiuqing, and nursed back to health where she spends some quality time with LXF, XMCS and SXQ. She is left to recuperate in XMCS's house during the final conflict in the Duel, and is still recuperating during Silver Hook Casino, after which we never hear from her again.

Fang Yuxiang, Ding Xiangyi and Chu Chu:-
One of the main villains of Silver Hook Casino, Fang Yuxiang uses her beauty to bait LXF in the casino and lead him to her husband where they ask him to help them retrieve an item. She is beautiful and cold, with the nickname "living ice mountain". Along the way he meets Ding Xiangyi who attaches herself to him. DXY is beautiful as well, but very vulnerable and scared of something, although she lends him assistance when he runs into trouble, and is pretty much his girlfriend for a bit. However, FYX catches up with them, reveals that DXY had some secrets from LXF and fights her off, then tries to flirt with LXF who, iirc rejects her. Next time LXF sees DXY she's lost both arms and legs, and begs him to retrieve the item for her to see. LXF is really sad, for although she betrayed him she had also given good help, and he was fond of her, but there was nothing else he could do for her. He then meets Chu Chu, one of a gang of flunkies who betray their old master and decide to follow LXF. She flirts with him too, and has the best line in the book when she says "do you want me to sleep with you?" "Waaantttt!!! *drool*" "then you go to sleep and just think about it" (in Chinese, "want" and "think" are both "xiang", an identical word). Later on Chu Chu and her gang inevitably betray LXF and Chu Chu kills her fellow flunky who loves her, and in his dying breath he embraces her with sword sticking out of his chest, impaling her too. Ding Xiangyi dies after LXF shows her the item, while Fang Yuxiang commits suicide when she realises that her lover actually loved someone else more than her, and that she was just a pawn. With her dying breath she asks LXF to promise that he'll kill her lover, and he does. All three girls were beautiful, but Fang Yuxiang was supposed to be the most beautiful of the lot. Ding Xiangyi was the damsel-in-distress kind of character, but with hidden agenda and dark secret martial arts. Chu Chu was cool and intelligent, but was always a flunky or groupie - it was obvious that any big plot was going to involve her merely as a henchwoman, but she really had charisma.

Ye Ling, Ye Xue and Flower Widow I only know from the Damian adaptation, and I haven't read Phantom Mansion either, so I can't really tell. I don't really know what Sha Man and Beef Soup are like, although I know both appear in Phoenix Dances in Nine Heavens.

In general all the girls are beautiful, but Shangguan Feiyan, Ding Xiangyi and Fang Yuxiang are probably the most seductive - they were the ones who captivated him just by looking at him. Xue Bing and Ouyang Qing were allies who gradually grew on him. Ding Xiangyi too, to a lesser extent, although he was attracted the moment she leapt into his arms. Chu Chu pretty much charmed him once her gang joined him but I don't recall her letting him touch her, so she probably doesn't count.

Ding Xiangyi, Fang Yuxiang and Shangguan Feiyan were very intelligent and all three were very proficient with darts, and could be relied upon to read the situation accurately and make decisions on the spot. Xue Bing was less sharp, while Ouyang Qing didn't really get a chance to participate much in the plots on her own, although she was observant enough to recount what she'd seen in the brothel which implicated some of the villains of the Duel.

From what I can gather, then, Shangguan Feiyan and Fang Yuxiang were pretty similar template, but the rest were quite distinct.

Looks like TVB followed the same formula for CLH '84 that it later would for LSF '86: take bits and parts of the novels that were *not* adapted during the 1970s, modify the hell out of them, combine them, and throw in retconned flashbacks of the novels that *had been* adapted during the 1970s during the first ten minutes of the series.

The front end of LSF '86 more or less adapted the EMBROIDERY BANDIT and attached it to the SILVER HOOK CASINO (which were separated by THE DUEL in the novels), and then assembled a semi-original storyline from parts of the later LUK SIU FUNG novels.

It's like the novels happened on Earth-0, the 1970s series on Earth-1, and the 1980s series on Earth-2.

Can you tell me about which CLH84 existed in the books and which ones were created by TVB? Did Barbara's character exist?

I can't believe how people look at the masked Simon and cannot tell he is that Gong Zi. The mask is made of near transparent fabric.

I forgot how did Wong Wan Choi and Simon's roles as real son and fake son came about? Did his mother lose him or was real son kidnapped and so the mom found a replacement son?

The front end of LSF '86 more or less adapted the EMBROIDERY BANDIT and attached it to the SILVER HOOK CASINO (which were separated by THE DUEL in the novels), and then assembled a semi-original storyline from parts of the later LUK SIU FUNG novels.

It's like the novels happened on Earth-0, the 1970s series on Earth-1, and the 1980s series on Earth-2.
I didn't recall the Silver Hook adaptation, but then they probably didn't adapt any of the characters in SHC, whereas with Embrodiery Bandit there was a Jin Jiuling as a major villain. I recall Mitra King as Xue Bing and Yong Wai Man as Beef Soup. Rebecca Chan was Qing Qing, while she didn't really exist in any LXF stories, I think. It's sad that with so many rich options for a leading girl TVB felt they had to make their own and not include Fang Yuxiang, Sha Man, Ouyang Qing, Ding Xiangyi etc, although he didn't get any girl at the end anyway. Xue Bing and Beef Soup died, iirc, while Qing Qing became the new head of the Holy Sect.
