I can't believe how people look at the masked Simon and cannot tell he is that Gong Zi. The mask is made of near transparent fabric.

I forgot how did Wong Wan Choi and Simon's roles as real son and fake son came about? Did his mother lose him or was real son kidnapped and so the mom found a replacement son?
I can't really tell, as I never read Chu Liu Xiang novels.. the masked Simon was just one of the many plot devices which you just have to believe, I guess. I could never understand why people couldn't recognise Clark Kent as Superman, Prince Adam as He-Man or, closer to wuxia, Kwan Hoi San as LaoDao Bazi. All that effort to unmask him as Jade Priest when all he has to do is talk and you know exactly who he is.

I can't remember then Wong Wan Choi part at all.. I'll have to rewatch and then tell you. All I recall was that he eloped with Kwan Hoi San's daughter after that tragic body-swapping arc.

Actually, Bluebeard, Lei Ha, and Fong Yuk Fei (I think that was his name) were significant characters in the first half of LSF '86. Apparently, they were all subordinates of Yuk Lor Saht, and they conspired to get Sai Mun Chui Sheut to kill Luk Siu Fung. They didn't succeed in that goal, but their actions resulted in the death of Sai Mun Chui Sheut's son.

I can't remember any of that!!! Wow, TVB really need to release the DVD. The name Fong Yuk Fei is correct - that's the brother of Fong Yuk Heong (Fang Yuxiang). Bluebeard was supposed to be her husband too, although it transpires that Fang Yufei was actually her lover, not her brother. Fang Yufei was supposed to be the main villain of Silver Hook Casino.

The only bits I recall about the initial stage were Embroidery Bandit, Xue Bing, and Hua Manliu's elder brother in pink, and Sun Xiuqing dying. The second half was with Pak Yan and Lau Kong fighting each other, while Rebecca Chan had to contend with her two martial sisters ambitions as Pak Yan loved her the most. The rest is all a blur.

Some of the stuff that TVB made up for the first half of LSF '86 was very Gu Longesque, and I think Gu Long himself might have been impressed with some of the twists that TVB came up with.

The first half of LSF '86 was great, but towards the end, it sank towards TVB cliche' land (although mercifully, TVB didn't pull the "all the Greats team up against the Super Powerful Bad Guy" card, although it *did* have a Super Powerful Bad Guy in Lau Wan Gui See - Lau Kong's character, who was basically TVB's stand-in for Gung 9).

I thought the best twist was making Madame Gung Sheun and the Red Shoes Association as subordinates of Yuk Lor Saht. That wasn't in Gu Long's novels, but it worked...it worked unexpectedly well.

As it turned out, the Incense Wood Swordsman (Fa Mun Lau's brother) was a part of Lau Wan Gui See's Secret Island Society. Bluebeard, Fong Yuk Fei, and Lei Ha were all *traitors* to the Western Divinity Sect, but conspired to take over wulin by pitting the most powerful wulin entities against one another (e.g Sai Mun Chui Sheut vs. Luk Siu Fung).

    Only in this series.

From the LUK SIU FUNG novels (and Damian Lau's LUK SIU FUNG adaptation), we knew that Fa Mun Lau had brothers, but we never "met" any of them in either the novels or the 1970s adaptation.

In the 1986 adaptation, TVB finally introduced us to "Fa Yeut Lau," one of Fa Mun Lau's older brothers, who was highly esteemed as one of the best doctors in the world - a gentleman and medical authority much consulted by wounded wulin warriors.

But Fa Yeut Lau had a deadly secret; he was also an assassin for the Secret Island Society, operating under the mysterious identity of the purple-clad, masked Incense Wood Swordsman, whose deadly sword skills were surpassed only by Sai Mun Chui Sheut.

Ya, I remember in XMCS's villa, Lu Xiaofeng, Honest Monk and I think, Sikong Zaixing were ganging up on him and were getting totally pwned until Ximen came to save the day. I don't recall him working for Lau Kong - I thought he had died way before Lau Kong even appeared.

They made Xue Bing fall for Lau Kong, didn't they, or something like that? I didn't like the dumbing down of the Red Shoes, though. In the novel all 7 (9 if you count Xue Bing and Shangguan Feiyan) had their own personality and history, but in the serial it was just Madam Gongsun (who didn't have anywhere near the charisma of the novel Madam Gongsun) and a bunch of henchwomen. I recall finding Yu Luosha's two Persian handmaidens really beautiful, but sadly they got massacred when Lau Kong's army invaded their island in retribution.

Luk Siu Fung, See Hung Jak Sing, and the Honest Monk were all injured, which explained their poor showing against the Incense Wood Swordsman (when healthy, Luk Siu Fung can take him one-on-one). Sai Mun Chui Sheut was fully healthy, however, so when the Incense Wood Swordsman saw that SMCS had returned, he hightailed it out of there...not wanting to test his skill against the Sword God's.

I don't recall him working for Lau Kong - I thought he had died way before Lau Kong even appeared.
Oh, no. Lau Wan Gui See (Lau Kong) appeared in the first episode, before any of the main characters did. We didn't learn that he was a villain until much later, though. At first, he seemed to be a benign source of information for our heroes...with few clues as to his sinister plans.

The Incense Wood Swordsman was a great mystery at first. He first appeared when he murdered Gum 9 Ling (the Embroidery Bandit) after Luk Siu Fung and Fa Mun Lau had foiled Gum's plot. Fa was trying to apprehend the Bandit when the Bandit was murdered by the Incense Wood Swordsman. Right away, Luk and Fa suspected it was part of a cover up, but for whom?

Much later, we learn that the Incense Wood Swordsman, the Embroidery Bandit, Ngok Yeung, and many others were known as "Invisible Men" - assassins working for the Secret Island Society headed by, you guessed it, Lau Wan Gui See.

They made Xue Bing fall for Lau Kong, didn't they, or something like that?
Yeah. I never believed that Sit Bing was really in love with him; it was more like a "revenge f*ck" after Luk Siu Fung had spurned her.

I thought the Red Shoes were cool as a concept, but in the series, none of them really had an identity other than Madame Gung Sheun and Lei Ha.

Here's the crazy thing: in the '86 series, Au Yeung Ching was retconned into being one of their members too.

I recall finding Yu Luosha's two Persian handmaidens really beautiful, but sadly they got massacred when Lau Kong's army invaded their island in retribution.
I don't remember her handmaidens. I do remember her students and her two high priests, however...all of whom later betrayed her.

Wow, you have a really really good memory! I can't even remember who Ngok Yeung is, or even who played Lei Ba, Fong Yuk Fei and Bluebeard, or that they even existed! According to this website Bluebeard was Lau Dan, and I can't even remember him in the serial http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Return_of_Luk_Siu-fung

Yeah. I never believed that Sit Bing was really in love with him; it was more like a "revenge f*ck" after Luk Siu Fung had spurned her.
It turned out pretty real, though, as Lau Kong was really good to her. Didn't she choose to die with him at the end when his island sank or something? She had a choice to leave and live, but she insisted on staying behind with Lau Kong.

Right, now I'm annoyed. She's one of my favourite LXF characters and I don't even remember her existing in the serial! I can remember the scenes from the themesong but don't remember all these characters.

I don't remember her handmaidens. I do remember her students and her two high priests, however...all of whom later betrayed her.
The two girls were the 罗刹二使 or two heralds. They wore Persian dress and were really cute, even if they almost never spoke. She had it coming with her two students - her nepotism for Qingqing was so obvious I felt sorry for the two of them. It was so obvious she had double standards, and whatever they did was never going to be good enough to make her happy, while Qingqing would always be her favourite. Later, as it is discovered that Qingqing is her daughter it really blows up. Kei Kei looked slimy but Dan Dan was just hot-headed, and sadly Dan Dan died while Kei Kei grovelled and was spared.

Ngok Yeung was a character who appeared in one of the later novels. In LUK SIU FUNG '86, he was depicted as something of a Sai Mun Chui Sheut-wannabe: he used a sword, dressed in white (mostly), and tried very hard (although didn't always succeed) in acting cold and unfeeling. His swordsmanship was good, but not anywhere near Sai Mun Chui Sheut's. In LSF '86, he was portrayed by the same actor who portrayed Mo Dong Hero # 4 in HSDS '86.

Lei Ha was played by the actress who portrayed Ma Sau Jen in LSF '76 and Ho Tai Chung's wife in HSDS '86. Don't know what her name was.

Fong Yuk Fei was portrayed by the actor who played Wu Teet Fa in CLH '84 and Mr. Silver Leaf in HSDS '86.

Lau Dan was good as Bluebeard, although this is one his forgotten roles. It was certainly a very different performance from his famous North Beggar Hung 7 Gung.

It turned out pretty real, though, as Lau Kong was really good to her. Didn't she choose to die with him at the end when his island sank or something? She had a choice to leave and live, but she insisted on staying behind with Lau Kong.
Yes, and maybe. It had a "revenge f*ck" vibe to it in my view, however.

Au Yeung Ching's appearance in LSF '86 was brief (she helped Ching Ching to escape from some people who were pursuing her, and helped her to investigate who had sent Sai Mun Chui Sheut to kill Luk Siu Fung), but the new twist (other than being a Red Shoe Associate) added to Au Yeung Ching's character in LSF '86 was that she was a martial artist. In the novel and the LSF '76 series, Au Yeung Ching was depicted as not being a martial artist. In LSF '86, she was a fairly decent fighter.

Yuk Lohr Saht wouldn't win many leadership awards, that's for sure.

Ai Wai! He appears in the themesong for a short while - I thought he was Ye Guhong, but that's purely because of his XMCS wannabe look =)

Lei Ha was played by the actress who portrayed Ma Sau Jen in LSF '76 and Ho Tai Chung's wife in HSDS '86. Don't know what her name was.
Oh, The beautiful Koo Miew Sze. It says in the credits on that page that she was also Jiang Qingxia, which makes her 5th sister of the Red Shoes (or was it 6th, can't remember between her and the nun). She's the wife/sister/lover (forgot which) of the Imperial Guard who got blinded by Jin Jiuling. She has a dual role, or is one of them a fake name, and is it like that in the novel?

Fong Yuk Fei was portrayed by the actor who played Wu Teet Fa in CLH '84 and Mr. Silver Leaf in HSDS '86.
Chan Wing Chun or something like that. Famous for being evil beggars with his Chen Youliang and Quan Guanqing in HSDS 2000 and DGSD 1997 being almost identically hateable =) The sort who if he is bad, has "I am evil" written all over his face the moment he appears. Which is a shame because he does good characters very well too. He just doesn't seem to have the chance to play a hidden evil kind of character, which Fang Yufei is supposed to be in the novel.

She had decent qinggong in the novels. She was one of the three masked women who flew out of Gongsun Daniang's room while LXF was waiting outside trying to figure out which one to catch - all three moved fast enough that LXF couldn't possibly hope to catch more than one of them. We don't really get to see her fight, though, although I'm not sure if she saw any action when LXF was holding 7th sister hostage and scrapping with 2nd and 3rd sister. Who played her, by the way?

Yeah. Ngok Yeung was one of a long-line of Sai Mun Chui Sheut-wannabes, just like Yip Goo Hung.

Ah, OK. If Ms. Koo was Gong Hing Ha, then I got her role wrong. Lei Ha was played by a 1980s TVB singer/actress named (I think) Wong Hoi Yan.

I don't know the actress' name, and she didn't have a signature role in TVB. She often played sl*tty characters, however. In terms of 1980s wuxia, she was Wai 4 Leung of the Kunlun Sect in HSDS '86 and also played the "Seductress Ghost" of the San Sai Ghosts in ROCH '83.

Chun Wong (Chow Bak Tung from LOCH/ROCH) also had a role in LSF '86...as Chu Ting! But Chun Wong's depiction of Chu Ting was the complete opposite of the 1976 version. In the 1976 LUK SIU FUNG adaptation, Chu Ting was a mellow, phlegmatic kind of guy. Chun Wong, characteristically, played him as a much more manic character...almost like Chow Bak Tung again, except with a bad temper.

I'm guessing the 1976 characterization was closer to the novel's.

The page actually lists her as 江轻霞/李 霞 —— 高妙思 饰 (this is the page http://baike.baidu.com/view/40494.htm ) which means she played both roles. I just wonder if it's meant to be the same character or if she played both roles.

Oh, I know who you mean. She's actually quite a looker, if a bit short. She was also the Zodiac Rabbit (the wife of the Horse, both of whom worked for the Rat) in the Tony Leung/Hugo Ng adaptation of Legendary Siblings. I actually find her really attractive, but sadly she never seemed to get a big break, or even a half-decent one which lists her name in the credits - I'll keep looking. I really want to watch this now!

Oh yes, in the novel, Ouyang Qing was already a member of the Red Shoes anyway - it wasn't a TVB twist. She was 4th in hierarchy.

OK. Looks like I'm totally confused here.

I think Lee Ha was an alias for Gong Hing Ha, or vice-versa. One was her real name, and the other her "respectable" name for operating publicly...kind of like how Yim Teet San was the public name of Yim Lap Boon in THE GOLDEN ROC KINGDOM'S TREASURE. Gong Hing Ha and Lee Ha were one character, though.

She was quite sexy. TVB always had her playing sl*tty roles (because hers wasn't the innocent type of attractiveness). She never did get a big break...playing supporting roles throughout her years at TVB.

I can get a screengrab from one of my VCDs - how do I post it on these forums? I'm supposed to upload them somewhere and then post the link, but I've never uploaded pics anywhere other than on facebook, and I'm not sure I want all my Facebook friends to see me post that pic. =)
