WTF, i just went back from a wedding and the picture came out, i'm noticably fatter than i normally see myself in the mirror, i'm not sure if i'm having eye problem when i see myself in the mirror, but the dam picture clearly shows that i'm fatter. this is wack.

It's pretty basic stuff. The answer is lighting and camera angles.

I seem and appear to have double chin in some photos I take but in fact in real life,I don't really have a double chin(My face is slim and long) I guess angle shots and lighting matters alot. Some of my friends faced the same problem so their suggestion will always be;Stick out your face from your neck with a slightly tilted-up angle.Stick your tongue hard up to your upper gum and clench your teeth together with a slight force.I have tried it but it seems that I became more like a giraffe

Any additional suggestions to look photogenic?

If you could stand to lose a few pounds, then tilt your head slightly when you take pictures. Side views are often more flattering. Easier done w/ cell phone camera or webcam though than when someone else is taking your picture. I always look a lot better when I take my own pictures than when other people do.

Take a short course in photography. Afterwards you'll be more camera-aware and know how to position yourself best for the shots, or to instruct the person taking your photos.

my art professor told me this is because the lens in the camera is flat, and the lens in your eyes are round. i don't know if she was BSing me though, bc she was weird and used to address me with, hello yellow. -_-

Now I understand why those Asian celebrities are so freaking skinny. They gotta look thin for the camera. So if camera/picture/video adds ten pounds can you imagine how those Asian celebrities look like in real life? They look so thin already. They must look like

Its the way light reflects of the subject in question, thats why certain people (ie some models) to look good in photographs they have to wear heavy make-up that if you go look at them in real life you will see how thick the layers of make-up are but when in the photograph it looks very nice. Of course not everyone needs to wear this much make-up to look nice in photographs, some people are naturally photogenic and some aren't.

Also lens distortion and light refraction are other factors which effect the image.

Not to mention for film cameras, the quality and type/grade of film used, and for digital cameras, the software and hardware used to transfer the light data into image data.

And finally the skill of the photographer comes into question.

i don't know if it's my stance, but my figure usually looks heaps better in photos. I almost resemble a barbie doll. That's not how i see myself in the mirror though- although that could be attributed to the fact that every woman has a mirror that stretches out their body width.

@warlock: that could be another reason why you seem to appear fatter on camera- men tend to get a better view of themselvs in the mirror.

many of these instances are due to optical illusions. Room/Environmental temperature, lighting, color of the clothes you are wearing, the patterns on the clothes, maybe your own eyes themselves, etc...all these factors effect what you see in the mirror or through any lens.

Remember when we are looking at a mirror or through any lens, there is still an invisible medium which we never notice it exists, the medium is Air, which is itself capable of refracting light, bending it, dimming or enhancing it, making it slow down or speed up...

Try looking at just your face in a hand mirror after you just woke up, when you are feeling stressed or tired, when you have just washed your face, when you are feeling refreshed, if all other factors such as lighting, temperature, etc are the same, you will notice that your mood and how tired or refreshed your eyes are will show slight differences in how you see yourself in the mirror.

speaking about how air can effect light, here is a small experiment you can do.

Take a small laser pointer and a sheet of A4 sized black colored paper.
Now find a large area (such as a parking lot or empty highway, the darker the surface the better).
place the laser pointer at one spot and the paper held upright at another spot about 10-100 meters a distance apart.

Make sure both are firmly secured so they wont move, you can even place both the laser pointer and the paper on a chair too, as long as they are at the same level with each other.

Now mark where the light from the laser pointer is on the sheet of paper on a very hot summer day.

Do not touch or move the laser or the piece of paper, come back later when the weather temperature is cooler (like an evening hour) and check where the dot from the laser pointer is now on the sheet of paper.

If done correctly you should notice the change in the position of the laser dot.

During hot temperatures particles in the air (even the atomic molecules) become excited due to the heat. Thats why on very hot days, if you look onto a busy street with cars you will see something akin to mirages and air waves.
