I find it surprising that TVB doesn't hold the rights to the music that they expressly commissioned for use in their own productions. They actually have to pay licensing fees to use their own series' music?

Stranger things have happened in the world of ownership and licensing laws, I suppose.

In any case, I have doubts that the master tapes of the BGM from 1970s and 1980s TVB productions even exist anymore. They were either wiped ages ago to make room, or have gotten lost or destroyed by other means over the years. I'd be surprised if they were still in pristine form somewhere.

I guess they could always make new "master tapes" of the BGM if they're aware of how much marketable value it has. They released the BGM for the 2000's version of The Bund and it sounds very similar, if not exactly, to that of the original version of the 80's. Tell me if I'm wrong.

I'll give it a listen and let you know.

I think it's impossible to record a note-perfect reproduction of something recorded long ago. Different musicians. Different equipment. Different circumstances. The inattentive might miss any differences, but the people who really care about this stuff will hear them.

Just listened to the YouTube track. Totally, totally different from the 1980s BGM. Same tune, yes...but entirely different sound.

On second thought, the track sounds more like an instrumental version of the the theme song than the BGM mood tunes!

Yep. That's all it is. I'm not saying that this track is poorly scored or ineptly performed, but it is a different creature from the mood pieces used in the original series' BGM. The originals, if their master tapes are lost, cannot be reproduced perfectly by a modern orchestra. Think about veteran musicians who periodically re-record their old hits. No matter how they try, they can't perfectly replicate the original performance.

Welcome back wargods. You got some good songs there. I was wondering about the Dragons Forever themesong. Is that from a Japanese soundtrack or something?

For the series "Blood Stained Intrigue" ("神劍魔刀"), do you guys know if its theme song (titled "黑白难辨") and its subtheme song (I don't know the title) have ever been released on CD? Apparently they were sung by Theresa Cheung Tak Lan. If yes,
what year did that CD come out? What does it look like?

These are the songs I'm referring to:

It appears that all the good songs from 80's TVB series which have not been released (like HSDS86 subs, Chor Lau Heung 1984 subs, etc.) are owned by Capital Artists?

I am very surprised and disappointed that they have not released those songs on CD. When Anita Mui passed away, I was so sad, but I was hoping that perhaps they would consider releasing those HSDS86 subs in one of her compilations (like they did with Roman Tam and the main theme song of CLH84 when Roman passed). Apparently they never did.

Have fans considered starting a campaign to petition Capital Artists to release those songs on CD? I wrote them some years ago but never heard back from them.

    3>
For the 1988 Taiwanese version of "The Legend of the Condor Heroes" ("射鵰英雄传之大漠英雄传"), do you guys know if its theme song (the title is "流水情") has ever been released on CD? Apparently they were sung by 王雯萱 and 杨佩春. If yes,
what year did that CD come out? What does it look like?

This is the song I'm referring to:

    4>
The 1985 Taiwanese version of Chor Lau Heung ("楚留香新傳", with Adam Cheng), the theme song was sung in Mandarin by Fei Yu Ching (費玉清). I wonder if that song has ever been sung in Cantonese if the series was dubbed in Cantonese for HK/Macau viewing region?

This is the song I'm referring to, in Mandarin: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aJb4FpLWlEo

Isn't this the Cantonese version? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eHETLbf9BUY

I wonder who sung the Cantonese version. Perhaps it's Adam himself?

    5>
Regarding the famous Chor Lau Heung theme song from the 1979 series (theme composed by Joseph Koo), is it true that this song was also rendered in Mandarin and used in many later non-TVB CLH series in which Adam was acting in that title role?

I am Vietnamese. I cannot speak/understand Cantonese and Mandarin, and I cannot read/write Chinese text (either traditional script or simplified). Nevertheless the language barrier does not stop me from liking theme songs (mostly songs from 80's TVB series).

    Re petrus:

    1) Yes, they have been released on CD back in 1986 (along with subtheme2). It never did re-issue due to licensing issue on one of the songs.

    Album cover:

    2) The Anita Mui fan club tried to push Capital Artists to release those unreleased songs......more on this later (#114)

    4) The cantonese version is also sung by Fei Yu Ching.

    5) I'll leave this up to AdamChengLover.

Capital Artists (under new ownership) is releasing old albums for the first time....apparently they are going to re-issue 40 of them. So far they have released 10 of them; see:

    http://www.yesasia.com/us/1024650282-0-0-0-en/list.html

2 of the albums have already been re-issued back in 2005 (under the old ownership who doesn't know shit, of cuz).....but this time the quality is much much better (especially Roman's 愛的幻想). They said there are going to be surprises later.....time will tell.

Fei Yu Ching's Cantonese rendition of 楚留香新傳 really sounds like Adam Cheng himself!! Sounds so different from the Mandarin version - he is one talented singer.

Indeed, when I first heard it, I thought it was Adam Cheng singing.

Comparing the two clips, I think the Cantonese rendition sounds more... profound and heroic? Probably because of different tempo or time signature/beat division or something? Hehe... the Mandarin rendition of the song just sounds too mellow to my ears, not something I would expect from Chor Lau Heung.

    @ wargods

Many thanks for taking the time to answer my questions. Much appreciated. I also checked out your YouTube channels, very impressive indeed.

Just out of curiosity, do you know which record company released that CD back in 1986?

I saw it on Yahoo! HK auction site:

    http://hk.f1.page.auctions.yahoo.com...ion/1124486475

    http://hk.f1.page.auctions.yahoo.com...tion/b18719758

Too bad that just like Yahoo! Japan auction sellers, many (if not most) sellers on Yahoo! HK auction site would not ship to non-HK destinations either. They seem to prefer to deal with local buyers. Many of these rare CDs show up on Yahoo! Asia auction sites (Japan, HK, etc.) from time to time, but I have never seen them surfacing on eBay.

Default Hap Hak Hang 俠客行 1989 theme song (Hap Hak Mo Ham 俠客無憾)

    @ wargods

I hope you don't mind me asking (since you have the song posted on your "CapitalArtistsFan" YouTube channel... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RBBzp8wx4lw )

I guess this song (performed by Lui Fong) is one of those never-released-on-CD song from Capital Artists as well?

You sure have some rare stuff. Thank you so much for sharing them.

All these years of NOT releasing these songs... That does sometimes make me wonder if Capital Artists still has the original master recordings of those songs. J/K

Since we're talking about the early 80's, they were probably 24-track analog master tapes. I pray that they will release those rare songs soon in our lifetime.
