Most helpless moments of each hero...?

What were the most helpless moments in the lives of each wuxia hero? By "helpless," I don't mean gravely wounded and unable to defend himself. If that were the case, the question would simply be "when was each hero most gravely wounded?" What I mean is on what occassion was the hero, although physically healthy, for one reason or another, unable to perform his heroic duties and help someone in need (due to some factor beyond his control)?

hm, tricky question! How about

- One-armed YG at the point where he was in the tomb and XLN was dying? Yes, he wasn't 100% physically healthy, but XLN was in far worse shape and YG felt pretty powerless to help her

- LHC when he couldn't prevent YLS and Madame Yue from getting killed?

- ZWJ when he couldn't prevent the Persians from taking Xiao Zhao away?

definitely LHC is the main one here. however, my mind goes to Xu Zhu and how he was forced to be Xiao Yiao Sect's leader -- helpless as his Shaolin martial arts are purged, then again as all of his codes are broken (meat, sex, etc). It turns out to be a happy ending, but only by accident, really.

The original question was for scenarios where the hero was helpless and in danger. Helpless to stop oneself from receiving good fortune is rather different.

I've been wondering, when you say to do his heroic duty, do you mean he was obstructed by someone either more clever or more powerful, or just unable to do something for any reason?

Also, by heroic duty, is that just chivarious acts or anyting the hero wanted to do?

seen from the reader's point of view, it would be great to inherit awesome martial arts and be a prince. actually, seen from anyone's point of view that would be great, normally. but as far as xu zhu was concerned, his way of life and religion were corrupted for him forever when WYS wiped out his martial arts, and TSTL forced him to break the buddhist codes. i'd be pissed too if someone captured me and destroyed everything i believed in, even if i became a powerful warrior afterwards.
