i suppose if there's parasitic worms/eggs/bacteria. but then, would these not survive in cows or other animals?

American kitchens are not much cleaner nor safer. Those that have worked and/or are working in a restaurant can attest to that. Anytime you eat out, it's a gamble. You may or may not get sick after your meal.

What about our meats? Are the safe?

Animal feces provide a larger amount of energy for such things like fuel, nutrient for soil than humans' feces. And a vegetarian feces probably can't compete with animals' if we put them to test in the soil. By the way, anyone having lunch now?

Several counties in Southern California have, since the late 1990s, begun to institute bimonthly health and safety inspections of all food service businesses in the region, with the grade of each businesses' relative sanitation and safety very publicly displayed. It seems to be effective: offenders are given low grades and shut down until they get their act together (and invariably, the worst offenders are Chinese restaurants).

I'm not sure whether or not China has anything similar in place, or if it would even be viable over there. It's necessary as hell, but perhaps not practicable.

Ironically, that's probably safer than using synthetic chemicals.

There's a report this afternoon on MSN stating that the story was cooked-up by a CCTV reporter trying to boost ratings. We'll never know for sure if it was true and the Government is doing damage control or what.

And now this White Rabbit lovers:
"A Shanghai company which makes the well-known “White Rabbit” candy on Wednesday hit back at the Philippines for banning the sweets’ sale and distribution because of harmful substances.

Counterfeiters were to blame, the company insisted."

Is that really rice you're eating or........

Chinese don't believe cardboard buns scare a hoax

BEIJING (AFP) - Ordinary Chinese are refusing to believe government claims that a recent media report on cardboard-filled buns was a hoax aimed at hyping the nation's food safety woes, state press said Saturday.

The government's assertion that the televised report was bogus is being viewed as an attempt by authorities to stem the bad publicity over a series of recent food safety scandals that have caused anger in China and abroad, the official Xinhua news agency said.

"I guess government departments must be hoping to reduce the negative impact on the public by declaring the TV news report a hoax," Xinhua quoted Chen Huiqin, a retired Shanghai middle school teacher, as saying.

A cab driver, surnamed Liu, said he could not believe the investigative news report aired by Beijing TV on July 8 was a fabrication.

"It's not just me, most of my customers didn't believe it was a hoax either," the report quoted Liu as saying.

The report generated wide national and international attention as the latest in a string of scares involving China-produced foods, including toxic seafood, virus-plagued pigs and chemical-laden toothpaste.

The "expose" purportedly showed a seller of the buns, known as "baozi," softening shredded cardboard with an industrial chemical and fortifying the bogus meat with a bit of fatty pork.

But following government inspections, the authorities concluded that the report was a hoax perpetrated by a temporary Beijing television station employee. Police have subsequently detained six people in connection with the case.

Earlier this month, China executed the former head of its food and drug safety watchdog for corruption, in what was widely seen as an attempt by the government to show it is serious about the problem.

This is getting more complicated than the plot of a Gu Long novel.

I dont believe this. Some far off relatives of mine sell these buns. Ive watched them make them from scratch. Certainly did not find any carboard in sight.

Why does everyone think china is a complete disgrace HUH? Just becaues its pretty polluted and does have some bad things, doesnt mean every single thing is horrible.
