    Default Chapter 1

Step by step, she slowly walked toward the magnificent two-story Victorian-style mansion, the place that she had spent her entire childhood, the place that held many wonderful memories.

A small breeze blew towards her as she recalled running around the yard with her older brother, falling asleep in her father’s arms as they returned from an outing, and digging through her mother’s closet for the perfect outfit. All those memories were like images playing right before her eyes as she tried to blink away her tears.

The mansion was once her salvation.

The mansion was once her home.

But all that changed six years ago.

Undeniably, she was showered with love and attention the very moment she was out of her mother’s womb. Her parents were more than overjoyed by her birth. Her entire life had been a bliss; loving parents, caring older brother, but all that came to an end the day her father announced his decision to wed her to the son of another prosperous family at the tender age of eighteen. To wed a man she had only met on a few occasions, a man she could barely call an acquaintance.

Despite her tearful protests, her father’s mind was made. Her father, the very person that had spoiled her rotten, always the more lenient parent, was forcing her to marry for the sake of alliance both business and political. He even turned a deaf ear on the protestation on her behalf from her mother and brother.

How was it possible that he could love her so much but yet sacrifice her for business and power?

Their family was already one of the most influential families in Hong Kong, was that not enough?

Finally, she took the only opportunity she could. Packing a small bag, she snuck out the day of the wedding, leaving the groom abandoned at the alter, and her family in embarrassment. She knew the consequences. She knew leaving would mean being disowned by her family but what other choices did she have?

With what limited money that she had taken with her, she began a new life in New York. She worked two part-time jobs in order to support herself, while she studied. Every night she would return to her small apartment exhausted, her thoughts drifting to her family, missing them.

But she never regretted her decision; she did what she had to do. She couldn’t have possibly thrown her entire future away and wed a man that she barely knew, leading a meaningless life.
Less than a month after her departure, her father made a public announcement of disowning her. Though it came as no surprise, it still hurt nevertheless.

Now six years later, she was standing in front of the place she once called home but courage evaded her each time she thought of pressing the familiar doorbell.
    Regretfully, she turned away.

“I know. I know. I’ll have that sent by tomorrow morning. Yes. Yes. I understand,” Gillian held the phone between her head and shoulders as she typed, trying to hurry along the annoying caller.

She rejoiced inwardly when the dreadful call finally ended.

It had been several months since she has been back, everything had been settled. The furnishings in the new apartment that she shared with her boyfriend were done and she had finally gotten used to working in Hong Kong. Different from New York, Hong Kong people were much more about connections and socializing.

It was not a matter of what you know as it is who you know.

Despite all the time that had passed, she still did not work up the courage to contact her family yet. Occasionally, she would know of their status in the business and political circle through the news, every now and then a picture of her parents would be displayed along would the reports.

She would notice several strands of grays along with a few fine lines appearing on their faces, her parents were aging, particularly her mother, no doubt from worrying about her. Each time, when she thought of that, a pang of guilt would strike her heart.

She had not been a good daughter.

Her old brother had become more dominated and respected in the business world, following in their father’s footsteps. She wondered if he missed her the way she often missed him.

“Hey! Ready to go?” A male voice broke into her thoughts, making her to look towards the door instantly.

She smiled at the sight of her boyfriend’s handsome dark face.

She had met Daniel during her last year of college in New York. He interviewed her for a Marketing Assistant position because the normal recruiter was out that day, as luck would have it she got the position but she did not see Daniel again until several months later when she was delegated to his department. It was never her intention to date a coworker, let all her supervisor but Daniel had been persuasive, not to mention extremely sincere and charming, making it virtually impossible to turn him down.

Along with the relationship, came the bitter rumors of her using Daniel to advance her career but she always tried her best to ignore them. She would sardonically comfort herself that it was just jealous coworkers trying to dissuade her confidence, furthermore Daniel was worth the extra stress.

He was the only person that she had confided her family problems to. He was the only person that knew she had ran away on her wedding day. He was the only shoulder she had to lean on when times got tough.

    He was her best friend.

Now, two years into their relationship, they had transferred back to Hong Kong together. To be closer to the place, she had grown up.

“Just let me finish writing this email,” she replied, while he made himself comfortable on the seat in front of her desk.

“I have to remember not to give you so much work before leaving time,” he joked, earning a playful glare from her.

    Dinner was delightful.

As usual, Daniel picked a great restaurant. The food was more than satisfactory but Gillian didn’t pay too much attention as she was much more indulged in the quiet romantic atmosphere and the soft music that played in the background. In addition, to the candlelights on the table, everything was just perfect.

Gillian was particularly excited when dessert arrived; it was always her favorite part of the meal. Daniel watched intently as she opened the small metal cover, expecting to see a slice of tiramisu that she had ordered, instead she looked puzzled when a small opened red box containing a sparkling diamond ring was revealed.

Her eyes immediately shot to Daniel when she realized what was happening. Daniel confirmed her questions with a smile. “Gillian, will you marry me?”

The sincerity in his voice and the hopefulness in his eyes were undeniable. She didn’t hesitate when the word ‘yes’ came out of her mouth.

Together, the two jumped up and embraced each other. Applauses came from all around the restaurant for the happy couple, blessing their future union; but from the far corner a pair of angry eyes was burning into the twosome.

    *

He had ditched his date on the street and gotten into his car, exploding in anger. At over 100 mph, he arrived ‘home’ in practically no time. 'Home’ was the penthouse of a newly constructed high-rise building.

He slammed the door as soon as he stepped into his apartment.

She was supposed to be his.

She was supposed his bride; she had humiliated him when she ran away on their wedding day.

Now she was planning to marry someone else.

He clenched his hand tightly into a fist at the thought.

There was no way he would let that happen.

Making his way to the mini bar, he helped himself to a glass of whiskey, taking it with him when he ventured over to the terrace. The strong wind was blowing his hair in all directions but he didn’t care. The only notion occupying his mind right now was her, Gillian Chung.

    Default Chapter 2

It had been well over a month since she accepted Daniel's proposal.

Sitting by the window inside a small cafe, Gillian stirred her cup of coffee absentmindedly, recalling her earlier conversation with Daniel and the reason she had come to the cafe.

He was once again urging her to contact her family. This time he asked her to do it for the sake of their upcoming wedding. He was right. She couldn't marry without informing her parents and brother. But her dilemma was she didn't know how. That's when Daniel suggested she contact her brother first then let things proceed from there. After a night's thinking and an entire pack of cigarettes, she agreed it was probably the best approach but even that was easier say than done.

    Default Chapter 3

From a distance, Carina watched the movements of her husband, Tony Chung, in the dimly lit room. His brows were furrowed together as he looked out the large window behind his desk, hand holding a glass of brandy; unaware that she had quietly stepped into his den.

The years had brought strands of gray to his once jet-black hair, fine lines occupied the corners of his eyes and mouth, but somehow all that only added to his charisma. Taking a quick glance at herself, a bitter smile flashed across her face and disappeared, how ironic it was, men only grew more charming with age while it was the exact opposite for women. She was hardly unattractive by any measurements but her beauty had definitely faded through the years, replaced by worldly wisdom.

    Default Chapter 4

The wind blew fiercely as the morning sun hid behind the cloudy skies. His long bangs partially covered the right side of his face due to the strong currents but he paid no attention. His eyes were solely focused on the grave stone before him.

Millions of thoughts occupied his mind but one thought outweighed the rest.

    His mother.

    Default Chapter 5

"Boss, she just left the office."

His lips curved upwards as he flipped his cell phone close and gazed into the setting sun while he sat comfortably in the outdoor cafe overlooking the Hong Kong skyline.

    His plan was working.

    She had read his note.

It was only a matter of time before she would be at his mercy.

    Default Chapter 6

Inside the confines of the apartment she shared with her fiance, Gillian sat motionlessly on the couch as she watched as the smoke from her cigarette slowly ascended until it disappeared. The day's events kept replaying in her head as she tried to digest the reality that had been bestow upon her suddenly.

After she had left the cafe, she went immediately to find her brother. She refused to believe that Chung Enterprises was failing just because Edison Chen told her so. She had to find the truth for herself.

    Default Chapter 8

    "Edison Chen!"

He looked up from his desk to see Kenny Chung barging into his office while his secretary trailed powerlessly behind him.

    "Mr. Chen, he..."

Nonchalantly, he gestured his left hand to dismiss her presence. "What do you want?"

"Why are you doing this? Is it revenge you're after?" This 'visitor' demanded.

    Default Chapter 9

Nicholas's eyes were glued to the flat screen monitor on his desk as he tried to make sense of all the information displayed but his thoughts kept drifting to a long cast aside moment.

    He remembered that day clearly.

It had snowed a few days earlier. The white precipitation was beginning to transform into dirty slush and slippery ice. He ran as fast as he could, swerving pass other pedestrians. His heart hammered anxiously with each passing second.

It was nighttime. Daniel and her were walking down a street full of vendors; it was very loud and busy. Everywhere she turned there were more and more people. Excitedly she walked along, purchasing different types of snacks from the vendors and sharing it with her fiance. She couldn't remember ever having more fun.

Then suddenly, the street became empty, everyone was gone except her. Frightened, she began calling for Daniel but her pleads went unanswered. Panic-stricken, she began to run, running in search of a safe location.
