Default WTH? From the LOCH translation

"Zhou Botong was terrified, he ran like crazy. Qiu Qianren was known as the ‘tie zhang shui shang piao’ [iron palm floating on the water]; his lightness kungfu was superior from Zhou Botong’s. If he was not scared of Zhou Botong, he would have caught up with him early on. "

So Qiu Qianren can catch up to Zhou Botong when Zhou Botong is terrified and trying to run away with all his might...

...but he isn't able to run AWAY from Zhou Botong?

    WTH?

If someone has a head start (which ZBT does) and you can catch up to them, that definitionally means that you must be quicker than them. It's impossible to 'catch up but not exceed' someone.

For example, ZBT runs away at 9 feet per second. He manages to run 50 feet away before QQR begins to chase. QQR chases at 10 feet per second.

Within 50 seconds, QQR should have caught up. And, if they were competing, 50 seconds later, he should be 50 feet ahead of Zhou Botong. Unless, for some completely unfathomable reason, when he catches up to ZBT, his own speed drops down from 10 feet per second to 9 as well?!

If you can catch up, that means your speed is greater. If your speed is greater, that means you can outpace someone. This is definitional...

Perhaps it is more likely that someone like QQR is faster in the short term, but in a longer duration, internal energy consideration might cause him to reduce the speed that he can run?
