This is a remake of an excellent tv series originally broadcasted in Taiwan and produced by Yang Pei Pei in the mid-80's. It was so well received that it beat Qiong Yao's "Zai Shui Yi Fang" tv-series (starring Liu xue hua and chin han) out of the #1 spot for the highest number of viewers. The 80s version starred the very talented Damian Lau and the ethereal Su Ming Ming as his beautiful love-interest.

Here are some pictures from the 80s version:

Damian Lau as "Qin Tian Bao"

Su Ming Ming as "Jin Ming Zhu"

More pictures from the new 2007 version of "HUAN JUN MING ZHU" (loosely translated as "Returning Pearl to Husband")

This actor plays Jin Ming Zhu's Father.....Funny thing is, he played Qin Tian Bao's younger gangsta-like half-blood brother in the 80's version. He was really good in that role too!!

Li Li Qun as Qin Tian Bao's Father

I don't know this actor's name but he plays "Lin Zhi Wen" (Jin Ming Zhu's first boyfriend)

This actress plays "Yang Hong" (Qin Tian Bao's notorious girlfriend/call-girl)

Huan Jun Ming Zhu (Returning Pearl To Husband)

    Synopsis/Summary (Spoilers)

Jin Ming Zhu was born to a wealthy family with noble royal blood. Ming Zhu was actually a "ge ge" (or princess), since she was a daughter of the former emperor's brother, cousin or maybe even nephew or something like that. This story takes place in the early 20th century (probably after the overthrow of the Ching dynasty and setting up of the communism party).

Her mother used to be a girl-servant to her father's first wife. The first wife is a very selfish and cruel woman who cares about nothing nor anybody besides money. Her father is also a man of poor character. However, her mother is a woman of great integrity but unfortunately her downside is that she is too nice and gets picked on by the first wife frequently.

When Ming-Zhu was young, she was already bethrothed to the second son of the Qin family (second son= Qin Tian Bao). However, because of the war, the Qin family moved and no news was ever heard of them ever again.

Ming-Zhu's father and his first wife lived their lives in great luxury and therefore ended up spending all of the family fortune. The only thing they could do was to marry their only child, Ming Zhu, to a wealthy family so they can continue to live in wealth. Not long after Ming Zhu's potential in-laws came to deliver their gifts to secure the marriage, a notorious group of bandits led by their leader Big Brother Ma came and kidnap Ming-Zhu for ransom. The bandits did not know that the Jin family was also facing hardship with money....all they knew was that the Jin family is the richest family in town. So after kidnapping Ming-Zhu for a few days, Big Brother Ma did not get the money from her father as expected, so he decided to rape Ming Zhu. Ming-Zhu is a very strong girl who would rather commit suicide than let him touch her. After a failed attempt at "ruining" Ming Zhu, and seeing how she tried to commit suicide by banging her head against a wall with blood pouring out everywhere, the sight actually made big brother Ma come to respect Ming-Zhu. So during Ming Zhu's stay with big brother Ma, she would be the bandit's servant, cook for them, did laundries for them, etc... At the same time, she would talk to big brother Ma about all the logics and how to live a good life as taught to her by her virtuous mother. Over time, big brother Ma came to respect ming-zhu even more and one day decided to let her go. So she went home and everyone was surprised to see her without even a scratch. Everyone assumed that she was probably raped by the bandits by now since they let her go so freely.

So soon after, big brother Ma found out that the Jin family actually has no money. He also knew that Ming-Zhu wanted to go to school and that her mother needs medical attention for she was sick and coughing up blood every now and then. So big brother Ma made Ming Zhu's father sell the Jin mansion and use the money to send Ming Zhu away for an education as well as to help Ming Zhu's mom with her sickness.

So off to school Ming Zhu went, and here she met Lin Zhi Wen. Lin Zhi Wen then began to fall for Ming Zhu and so he was always over at Ming Zhu's house to help her build furnitures, even though Ming Zhu's father and step-mom looked down on him because he was poor. Lin Zhi Wen's best friend is actually Qin Tian Bao, a well-known playboy in town. So once Qin Tian Bao came into Ming Zhu's circle of friends, Mr. Jin (ming zhu's father) then realized that Qin Tian Bao was actually the one that Ming Zhu was bethrothed to a very long time ago. Without any pride of whatsoever, Mr. Jin went to the Qin family's house (the Qin father is a military General and so he was quite powerful and rich). Mr. Jin introduced himself and gave both Mr and Mrs. Qin a trip down memory lane and reminded them about the promised marriage between their two children. Mrs. Jin is also a woman of integrity so she tried to keep the promise both families made many years ago. However, Qin Tian Bao opposed the marriage because he knew that his best friend Lin Zhi Wen had a thing for Ming Zhu. He made up an excuse to tell his mother that Ming-Zhu wasn't his type and that she was too dull, plain and boring for his taste. However, Mrs. Qin felt bad about breaking off the promised marriage so she took Tian Bao to meet Mr. Jin and apologized. She also gave them some decent amount of money which Mr. Jin and Mrs. Jin (the first wife) readily accepted.....so that solved the marriage problem!!

Tian Bao also has a girlfriend at the time. Her name is Yang Hong. She's a famous call-girl in town, whose known for her beauty. Tian Bao was just casually dating her, and never took her seriously. So after spending some time with Lin Zhi Wen and Ming-Zhu, Tian Bao actually enjoyed his life much more because their friendships were genuine and they were real people, unlike all the superficial cardboards cookie-cutters he knew in his life. Over time, after spending a lot of time with Ming Zhu, Tian Bao started falling for her. He did not dare to fess this up to her because of his friendship to Lin Zhi Wen. However, eventually Tian Bao's younger half-brother, Qin Tian Fu, found out. Qin Tian Fu loves his second brother dearly and would do anything for Tian Bao, without hesitation or regards to others. He looked up to Tian Bao like a great role model. So needless to say, once Tian Fu found out that his brother likes ming zhu, he made a plan to get rid of Lin Zhi Wen, get him out of the picture so his brother might have a chance with Ming Zhu. And this is the beginning of more problems to come.....

This was an awesome series in the 80's. I guess they are just remaking all of them
The sets were really crappy, but the emotions and the story were just immensely absorbing

Just wanted to share with everyone:

    THIS SERIES IS SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOooooooooooooooo GOOD!

This film is really addictiive. I'm up to episode 27 (44 episodes altogether). Its been a while since I've watched any tv-series that prompts me to watch disc after disc after disc without fast-forwarding or skipping any scenes.

For any one who is familiar with the 80s versions starring Damian Lau and Su Ming Ming, I have to say that this version is a definite rehash of that version. In other words, this new version did not change anything about the story!! Everything is retained here, including most dialogues, characters, plot, and even how the events unfold in the same chronological order as the 80s version. It seems like nothing has changed other than the actors and the background/sets (which are beautifully filmed in this newer version). This new version also has that very memorable theme song from the 80s version, although now it's a sub-theme song in this newer version.

So far, my only gripe is that Dong Jie as "Jin Ming Zhu" fails in comparison to Su Ming Ming. That's not to say she's not good, but IMO she doesn't stand out in this role. Maybe it was because Su Ming Ming had already set the bar too high for this role, and made it difficult for any other actresses to fill in her shoes. IMO, Su Ming Ming is way prettier and more believable as a poor refined "simple" girl worthy of having 2 best friends fall head over heels for her than Dong Jie.

EVERYONE SHOULD RUN OUT and buy, rent or borrow this series and watch it immediately. But be prepared to spend a few days couped up in front of your tv!
