Default His Dark Materials: The Golden Compass

His Dark Materials: The Golden Compass (based on the Philip Pullman's trilogy)

    $this->handle_bbcode_img_match('http://thecia.com.au/reviews/h/images/his-dark-materials-the-golden-compass-poster-1.jpg')$this->handle_bbcode_img_match('http://thecia.com.au/reviews/h/images/his-dark-materials-the-golden-compass-poster-0.jpg')

The Golden Compass is the first book of Philip Pullman's trilogy. It is known as Northern Lights in countries outside of the US (i hate the way they do that with novels)

    Cast:

    Lyra Belacqua Dakota Blue Richards
    Mrs. Coulter Nicole Kidman
    Lord Asriel Daniel Craig
    John Faa Jim Carter
    Farder Coram Tom Courtenay
    Serafina Pekkala Eva Green
    Lee Scoresby Sam Elliott
    Roger Parslow Ben Walker
    Ma Costa Claire Higgins
Master of Jordan College Jack Shepherd
    Fra Pavel Simon McBurney
    Iorek Byrnison (voice) Nonso Anozie
    Ragnar Sturlusson (voice) Ian McShane
    Pantalaimon (voice) Freddie Highmore
    Mrs Lonsdale Magda Szubanski

    Plot: (credits IMDB)

Lyra Belacqua (Dakota Blue Richards) is a young girl living at Jordan College in the Oxford of an alternate world much like our own where everyone is accompanied by a daemon...

Reminds me of Narnia. Looks pretty good from the trailers though.

I got so confused when I saw the trailer, because it reminded me of Northern Lights (polar bears) but they said it was The Golden Compass... and then someone told me that they were the same thing. sigh.

Nicole Kidman was miscasted. Her character in the novel was a brunette.

I absoulutly LOVED the books as a kid. Read them over and over again. So I'm really looking forward to this movie. But like the previous members have said, I hope they don't ruin it like they did with Narnia. I'm putting all my hopes on the great cast to pull this one off, so they can make the rest of the series as well.

This movie looks good and I'm definitely going to watch it. I will see whether it's as good as 'Stardust'.

stardust was awful from what i heard! Only bested by eragon in awfulness.

i thought narnia was a well made production, it just lacked... magic? the edge that makes a film watchable over and over again, that special touch- now i'm not making any sense...

anyway, i'll probably watch this since i enjoyed the novels and the trailer looks really awesome

You have to watch Stardust so that you can judge how good it is on your own, toto.

Narnia isn't that great; on the contrary, it's very average. Narnia has a good plot, but the script isn't very well done. Stardust's script was very well done, and the actors and actresses did well too.

I wonder if they will tone down the anti-religious stance of the series... would be a shame but it is a hollywood movie and the bible belt might go nuts...

    I hope not though

I've seen the trailer and the CGI look pretty good. i am definitely anticipating for it.
I have the book, but am refusing to read it until i watch the movie. 9 out of 10 movies based on books are ruined because they're not as good and people are biased against them.

This movie is awesome! The special effects are visually beautiful and the ending begs for a sequel. This movie is highly recommended.

I heard that some Christian groups hate this movie.

Me planning to watch it sooner or later. But then again, I still didn't manage to catch 'Enchanted'.

Haha...I went and saw "Enchanted" yesterday. Don't ask why I’d chosen to see that movie. It was so corny, but really sweet. Some parts, I had to close my eyes and cringed, asking myself why I'm here among all the little kids. Anyhow, the movie ended and my friend and I were on our way out the door, when we saw that "Golden Compass" had just started. It must have been a sneak preview as there was only one time slot showing. We snuck in and watched this movie. Now I don't feel like I wasted $9 bucks on Enchanted.

Enchanted has really good reviews and it did well at the box office. However, I think that it is only worthy as a rental. Amy Adams is a lovely actress who brought heart and warmth to the cartoonist character princess, Gisselle, and Patrick Dempsey...ahhhh...what more can I say about Dr. McDreamy?
