What do Asian males listen to?

In America and Europe, few males listen to boy bands. They listen to a variety of different genres and styles, but tend to avoid music that is too soft and too pop. Pop stars are of course the most popular, but artists in different other genre that are a little bit more hardcore are also very well known like Metallica, NIN or even not too hard, yet not too peppy like Radiohead or Pulp.

In Asia on the other hand, there's A LOT of boy bands and also many, many pop artists and few rock bands that are popular, so I wonder what do Asian males listen to? To young Asian males out there that lives in Asia, what music do you listen to?

wierd question, but i'll try to answer it. Male or not it's about the same.

The term "pop" music is probably derived from "popular" music, meaning it's not just 1 genre, but whatever is popular at the time. so that's probably what most PEOPLE listen to, male or female. Right now R&B is making influences, so you can probably say that most of them go with R&B.

I'm into classic, old-school rock 'n roll (Chuck Berry, Buddy Holly, the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, etc.), but I'm a bit older than most of the demographic here.

Of course, that music is old even by the standards of my age: the Beatles broke up two years before I was even born, and Elvis Presley died a month before I started Kindergarten.

There is a growing rock music scene in Hong Kong, China and South Korea.(Japan already has a big one). In Hong Kong, the punk/hardcore/metal scene is growing with bands like King ly chee and all the other hardcore bands. Their music is not popular with the mainstream and most asian males don't listen to them. I hate to sterotype but the ones who do listen usually have piercings, tattoo's and you know the typical punk/rock look.
Korea has had Seo Taiji for a while and while it might not seem like it due to the tremendous amount of boy pop bands there are in South Korea, rock music is pretty big there.
Taiwan has Chthonic, who actually toured the US this summer in Ozzfest(which was free this year by the way). Their a metal band from Taiwan that is pretty big there.
China. China also has a growing rock scene especially in Shanghai night clubs, my only complaint is they all sound alike and in my opinion, Mandarin doesn't sound good with rock music.

I lived in Japan for a whilet, so I listened to a lot of the Japanese rock bands and very few Chinese bands. But overall when it comes to music that's not mainstream in Asia, most of the male youths turn to Western bands.

What's to stop Asian males from listening to Western music? It's an incresingly globalised world. Even my parents grew up with Western music, and that was in the 60s. Music crosses all barriers.

One thing though, I find that Chinese (Asian is far too general a term) guys generally do not have the same aversion towards 'soft' music that Western guys have. I'm not sure about those who were born or grew up in Western countries. It's what I've observed in my Asian born friends. Sure, they might be fans of Kanye West or Led Zepplin, but it doesn't mean they can't appreiate Jay Chou either.

You probabaly don't know but in Thailand, Rock music is actually quite mainstream, and is not just popular amongst the males but equally as popular with the females too. But I guess in the asian music industry, Thaliand's music isn't as popular unlike Chinese, Korean, Jap across Asia. Which is just too bad, cas they have really good songs, especially rock ones.

i'm not an asian male, but my cousin listens to 1tym, masta wu, and other korean rap. a lot of the artists under the yg family music label are geared towards young males, and they're very popular as well.

I have the impression that in Korea, if it's not pop, it's rap and R&B.

I know this is so yesterday, but I still listen to Beyond mostly. I like Eason too, of the current artists.

I have no time (or frankly, interest) to follow the music scene.

I was into pop music when I was in HS, but I've grown out of it.

Most people past their teens do not follow the music scene. That's why I'm clueless with what's IN now. I have no idea what people listen to nowadays, especially in East Asia. From browsing the threads here, I noticed that there were a lot of mentions of boy bands. I then wondered do males in Asia also like boy bands because they seem to be everywhere or is it just girls?

i guess the only chinese artists i listen would be classified as pop.
eason, jacky, leo ku, sammi, candy, tse ting fung, yeung chin wah, wong fei etcetc. lmf. beyond. would be only non generic pop I guess. not much to choose from you know. everyone seems to be copying everyone else.

I listen to C-pop, R&B, hip-hop, rap, classical or worldly instrumental, etc.

Asian males also listen to pop lah. Not sure about now, but my male friends during my uni years listen to Alan Tam, Jacky Cheung, Chang Yu-Sheng, Tarcy Su and Faye Wong. Lots of them like Faye Wong actually. One of my male friends like Teresa Teng very much too.

I believe Beyond should be quite popular amount males too.

Maybe asians male are not too concern about looking 'sissy', so they don't mind listening to pop. Not that I think pop is sissy. I just thought this might be the perception of the american males since you said they avoid soft and pop music.
