I think beauty has alot to do with most people's selections, certainly. Today that seems to be all the is necessary to be considered an great actress by most peoples standards (present company excluded, or so I'd like to think) "Is she Hot? Yes. Ok, then she must be a fantastic actress".
Back in the day, A pretty face would only get you so far, women really had to prove themselves to good actresses or be relegated to B roles or total obscurity. As Gene Kelly's character in Cover Girl (1944) was fond of saying "You don't get to the Top on your face, you get there on your feet", which is a philosophy lost on many today.
