    Default Need help! .exe problem

Well this is what happened, I was playing around with windows movie maker and then I decided to download some new effects for it and came to this site. http://www.rehanfx.org/split_video.htm
After i downloaded it, this open with window popped up and i thought i had to extract it because the instructions on the site told me to.

So i clicked on winRAR which is a program for extracting compressed things. But i didnt know at then bottom of the 'open with' window the "always open this type of file with the chosen program" box was ticked. and i ended up having all my .exe files not opening properly because whenever i try to open them the computer goes "winRAR cannot open this file". and all my important programs are .exe (msn, media player, itunes, MOZILLA, i was lucky i had a mozilla window already open or i wouldnt even be able to go on the net.)

So i uninstalled winRAR in hope of everything becoming normal. and now when i try to open a .exe file an 'open with' window pops up and i don't know what the heck i open something like windows media player with. i even tried doing system restore but even the system restore wizard is a .exe file

I don't think i made any sense but i am in desperate need of help. please help meee. i beg youu

yea, you can obviously tell im not good with technology

should i just reformat my whole computer?

usually, all you have to do is right click and select "choose program" and then you can just change what it opens up with again, even if you've already selected something before.

lol, i see the problem now

.exe is the program, so you can't exactly choose the program. How you got it to open with winrar is completely beyond me since none of my .exe files even have that option!

sorry i can't be of more help. Not a computer expert...

You would need to fix exe file association via Registry

    1. Click Start then select Run type Regedit and enter
    2. Find this key HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT \ exefile \ shell \ open \ command
    3. Double click Default on the right pane
    4. Delete the current value data and type "%1" %*
    5. Find this key HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.exe
    6. In the right pane, set Default to exefile
    7. Exit Regedit and reboot

    In Vista, you will need

    1. Click the Orb, type Regedit in the Start Search (don't press Enter)
    2. On the Programs list, right click Regedit.exe and select Run as administrator (you may need to know the administrator password if ACL is enabled)

    This will help.

How to show known file extensions in Vista
Control Panel/Classic View/Folder Options/View Tab/ deselect "Hide extensions for known file types"
Due to several complaints, I will stop using the terms "Babe" and "Baby" in reference to our female counterpart. They will now be replaced with "B*tch."
