    Default Houston

I’m visiting Houston next month for a few days, and I'm interested in visiting China town and Vietnamese town in the area. Is there anything specific that anyone can recommend seeing or doing? I will be accompanied with guests, so I feel compelled to organize an itinerary of activities to perfect the trip. I’m doing research on the web to get ideas, but I want to get some feedbacks from people who are from Houston or have knowledge of the area.

Is there any good recommendation for restaurants? Also, is there a Korean town in the Houston area? I’ve been deprived of good Korean foods of late, since I've not encountered even one decent Korean restaurant around my area.

I wouldn't call it Korean town but Houston does have a short strip of Korean restaurants. I went to one the other week and it was good. You should check it out.

    Asiana Garden Restaurant
    1055 Gessner Dr
    Houston, TX 77055

The Chinatown here is definitely something worth checking out. It spans several blocks with HUGE shopping complexes all over the place. The food is cheap and good. Local favorites are Tan Tan, Sinh Sinh, Saigon Pagolac, Juice Box (desert), etc...

Others notable tourist attractions: Johnson Space Center, Museum District, Houston Zoo, Theatre District, Kemah.
For shopping: Galleria, Memorial Mall (close to Asiana so you can do both together)

If you want something more specific like night clubs, karaoke bars, coffee shops... just ask away.

How are the housing market in Sugar Land, TX? In 2006, ranked #3 best place to live in the US. (http://money.cnn.com/magazines/money...PL4870808.html)

A friend recently invested $300k in a house there. I wonder should I do the same since i do have some cash on hand.

Could anyone recommend a place for some good 'ol Chinese food in Houston's Chinatown? Dim sum? Dinner? I haven't had real Chinese food in the last 1.5 months since I moved to a small town, but I'm in Houston for the rest of the week, so I'm hoping to capitalize on that.

    Thanks everyone!

Hong Kong Food Street is good and my Chinese friends say it's pretty authenic.
    9750 Bellaire Blvd
    Houston, TX

Fung's Kitchen has good dim sum.
    7320 Southwest Fwy # 115
    Houston, TX

Give those a try and let me know. Maybe I can come up with more later.

CrazyT, you're the best! My conference took up more of my time than I thought it would, but I finally got out to Chinatown today and tried Hong Kong Food Street. Mmmmm... it was awesome! Too bad I'm going home tomorrow and won't be able to try more restaurants. Thanks so much for the recommendation.

Hey Crazy T, thank you for your recommendations! I visited the area a few weeks ago and enjoyed it tremendously. I will definitely go back. Chinatown and Vietnamese town are basically on the same strip. There were so many restaurants to try in a short period of time. Another local restaurant that I want to give prop to is called “Pho Bon Phuong.” My guests and I actually went back to this place 3 times during our visit. Every single dishes that we tried on the menu were wonderful.

In Houston the Battleship Texas is worth a visit.
The sleeping area for the Marines that served on her gives new meaning to the words 'close quarters' and 'packed like sardines'. For more 'packed like sardines' accommodations you can visit Seawolf Park in Galveston and tour a submarine and a Destroyer Escort. While in Galveston, a visit to the Lone Star Flight Museum is worthwhile if you like Warbirds. They hold Warbird Airshows on some weekends.

Time to bust out my fave hobby in Houston - EATING!

Best Buffet: I did like Tokyo One but now that it's a new owner, I haven't tried it since. Benihana has a pretty good sushi selection for their buffet. It's quite pricey and only available at Westheimer.

Best Happy Hour: Miyako and Kona Grill. Miyako is so yummy and cheap but not much to drink. Kona Grill has drinks but it's not too yummy! I just like Kona's variety.

Best Dim Sum: I like Kim Son more than Fung's Kitchen since it's a lot cheaper.

Best HK style Tea joints: HK Cafe but it's getting quite expensive. =(

Best Milk Tea: I like the jasmine cream inside HK4 but I'm currently loving Juice Box.

Best Chinese Cuisine: Fufu - so cheap and yummy. Xiao Long Bao rocks!

Best Banh Mi: I like the special more than bbq so there's not as much to pick from and I'm much more pickier. I guess I like that place on the opposite corner of Lee's Sandwich.

Best Hang Out: House of Bowl. Yummy drinks and cheap food!

Best Sushi: I'm not sure on this one. If purely on sushi, then it's Miyako but their rolls suck!

Best Hot Pot: Shabu Shabu and Fufu cafe. Yummy and cheap. Gotta get my lamb.

LOL Pandamao, I think you're my food-loving twin!

Buffet: I've tried Tokyo One before and after the change in ownership but I still don't like it that much. For sushi buffet, I find Kirin and Todai quite good and reasonably priced.

Happy Hour: I haven't been to Kona Grill since I heard it was horrible but I find Miyako to be quite good. I just don't like the parking situation with the one on Westheimer.

Dim Sum: Fung Kitchen is pretty good except it gets too crowded on the weekend. I just went to Kim Son this morning for dim sum Have you tried Golden Palace? It's pretty good also. I've just discovered this place next to Juice Box called HK Dim Sum and it's quite good. The chef who used to work at KS decided to open his own place so it's the same quality except cheaper!

Milk Tea: I used to go to HK4 for it but now my loyalty lies with Boba Zone. You have got to try their milk tea! They also have artichoke, which is a bit too sweet but still pretty good.

Chinese Cuisine: I've tried Fufu but I didn't quite like it. Maybe because I didn't know what to order? I found the food too greasy.

Banh Mi: I think the place you referred to is Thim Hing, which is also one of my favorites. I like their chicken sandwich. Have you tried Nguyen Ngo? It's in the same shopping center as Lee's but at the opposite corner. They only have cold cut meats but it's still pretty good. Instead of butter, they use this awesome homemade mayonnaise that everyone loves. And I heard their pate' is pretty good (I don't eat it)

Hang out: Tried House of Bowls but didn't like it but my friends kept saying it's good so I'm going to revisit soon. Any dish you recommend?

Sushi: I like Hokkaido and Jun for their prices. For fancy events, I prefer Ra, Tokyohana or Uptown. Ra has a very good squid salads Tokyohana has good fillet mignon and their catepillar roll is tasty; Uptown has this awesome peach iced tea and their rolls are also delicious.

Hot Pot: I used to go to Tan Tan for this but now I like KS since they offer a wide selection of seafood and it's a buffet. I love Shabu Shabu but can never finish. Will try hot pot next time at Fufu though.

How about Korean food? I've been to a couple of places down in Long Point but can't remember their names. Have you tried Tofu Village? It's good and inexpensive. My friends and I tried Tyme Table on Westheimer, it was bad and way overpriced!

Now if you'll excuse me, I gotta go wipe the drool off my keyboard

You are soooo cute. =) I wish to be your twin but i'm so much older than u!!!!

Korean: I like Da Zhang Jin, which is next to MingLi 22. If you need a haircut, go to MingLi 22 and ask for Vivian. Tell her Stephanie recommended you and she'll do a very good job on you.

Hmm - I need some good viet recommendations. I'm not very good with that. I do love this one place that only serves 1 type of noodle and they have it either dry or with soup ... soooo good!

Fufu garden - you have to eat their xiao long tang bao. Tell them it's the dumpling with soup inside. Everyone gets it - their best entree.

House of Bowl - you have to get their ice lemon tea. I usually get their Cream Corn Rice or noodle dishes. Try their hot sauce, soooo yummy too!

I went to HK dim sum this weekend for the first time and they sucked!!! It was awful but I will try it once more since u said it was good. Kim son is delicious!

Fufu's hot pot - u have to get their fatty beef. It's so yummy!

    Places not to go!!!!

The old after 5, yeah - that place is HOT and Nasty.

Oh.. you should try Yan which is right next to Tofu Village also .. their sushi isn't too bad. Their udons are yummy!

Cafe 101 is overrated. Hate it. Sake taste like water. Service is slow.

Hmm .. Best Midnight snack goes to Tan Tan for their A1 pancake! sooo yummy!

Alright - I shall resume my battles at the Wuxia forum. Next topic: Shopping!!! Hahah

I'm gonna write down all the dishes you mentioned and try them out in the next few weeks. Where is MingLi 22? It's funny because I've been thinking about getting a haircut but I'm trying to wait a little longer to grow my hair out some more so I can donate it
