Yet you fail to mention herbs that can cure almost any poison, medicine that can 'heal' the dead, and my personal favorite party trick, re-attaching eye-balls.

Testing whether the person is still breathing the standard way of determining if a person is dead. It wasn't dependable and there have been cases where the supposedly "dead" people weren't actually dead and woke up in their funeral, some even in their coffins.

I believe back then, that was the more appropriate way to test, aside from taking the pulse. Only those who have been trained would be able to do that. I don't think the uneducated commoners would know how to take a pulse.

A person untrained in taking the pulse could always feel the chest for the heartbeat but that is usually not preferred as personal privacy/dignity was well respected back then.
