    Default Setting for Wuxia fiction

Which kind of wuxia worlds would you prefer?

    1. A world that is based on historical events and people.
    2. A world with the same locations and culture but a separate history, aka a parallel universe.
    3. A completely original world made up by the author.

Do you have any particular reasons for making such a choice? Are there any other permutations that you can suggest to be added to this list?

I would prefer #2, because that's where most of the existing wuxia novels set.

In my imagination however, I have conceived another exploitation of wuxia which borders absurdity, and that is to incorporate many cross-universe, well-known figures into a wuxia-style martial arts mayhem. For example, have Mao Zedong and Chiang Kai-shek fight for the right to rule China, but in a battle of fantasy swordplay. There would be a scene where both leaders stand on top of a building in a stylish sword-raising stance, and they would be dressed in characteristic wuxia-style clothes and played by young actors. In other words, a wuxia-inspired universe which is not limited by time or source.

That would be rather interesting, PJ. ^^

I guess I would go for the second option as well, since that would mean you would not be touching characters created by others. Jin Yong's stories do have several historical figures and events incorporated in them and if you go by the first option, you'll be treading on some toes.

Hmm.. What sorts of skills would Mao Zedong and Chiang Kai-shek use then? :P

In keeping with the 'semi' historical references,

Mao would be using the 五星红剑 (Five Star Vermillion Sword) while Chiang will be utilising the 青天白日剑法 (Clear Sky Brilliant Sun Sword Stance).

And the kind of metal Mao Zedong's sword will be made out of is stuff peasants had lying around that they could resort to melt down in their backyard furnaces.

Also, the reason why he's known as "Great Leap Forward" Mao Zedong was because of his incredible hing gung to jump over collapsed bridges that were made by the same useless steel.

Yes, I envisioned something like Grindhouse meets Wong Jing.
