I was reading an old post by green destiny, and (s)he mentioned that Zhou Zhiruo came from an ambitious family, her parents wanting to set themselves up as emperor and empress. That puzzled me, for I thought ZZR was the daughter of a lowly boatman. Which is right?

Zhou Zhiruo was indeed a boatman's daughter, which gives her the humblest origins and childhood of any of the major characters in Jinyong's main wuxia novels. There are a couple of hints in the last quarter of the novel that she quite liked the idea of being an empress. This contrasts her with her rivals in Yi Tian, who in their typically Jinyongian way are often shown putting their love for Zhang Wuji above everything. (ZZR eventually falls into line, though, which I thought disappointing.)

in the first edition, zhuo zhiruo was the daughter of a ming sect rebel who set himself up as a king. the yuan dynasty destoryed him. ZWJ's sworn brother, cheng was at the boat trying to protect the king's son who was zhuo zhiruo's brother and her. it was changed in later edition because miejie should not have accepted a disiple who is ming jiao desendent .

I thought she is the daughter of the boatman, who happen to be ferrying the son of the deposed king and Cheng?
