    Default Favourite NON-fighting moment(s)

There's been threads about favourite fights in wuxia stories but I don't recall any thread specifically for non fighting moments (and if there are then sorry for the redundant thread). So... please discuss.

For myself, it would be When Wei XiaoBao was in Taiwan and he tore down the statue Koxinga's wife and replaced it with that of Chen.

lol, it seems we're having a hard time coming up with one... I guess the only one I can come up with at the moment is in LOCH when HR says to GJ something to the effect of, "I know we're going to suffer for this, I'm going to help you defend Xiang Yang anyway." I can't remember where it is (read it in the awesome translation here ) but it was touching to see HR decide to sacrifice her dreams and ideal life for GJ's sake.

I've always enjoyed Gwok Jing and Genghis Khan's debates over what the true meaning of being a hero is.

RIGHT! How could I have forgotten that? Those did enrich LOCH. Coming up with more moments like that is hard... you're a hard act to follow, Mr. Cheng

Still, here are some other memorable ones I can think of now
    - GX's meeting with He Zudao
    - Yingying and LHC cooking frogs--and burning some of them
    - Yuen Chengzi's protecting Chongzhen--I don't know how accurate the '06 adaptation was, but at least in the series, the scene was quite nuanced.

My favourite line is from Gu Long. Nothing about heroics, morality, righteousness or glory but a simple philosophy of being carefree.

    陆小凤叹了口气,道:“你若肯让我安安静静的吃完这碗鱼翅,我情愿给你五万两!”

I find this line utterly cool. If only Sima had taken up the offer!

The seriously injured Zhang Wuji and Zhao Min eating overcooked leftover rice in a rogue pagoda, next to a few dead crooks that ZWJ killed earlier.

When Lu Xiaofeng was waiting for Gongsun Daniang to finish changing and made those comments which made Erniang, Sanniang and Ouyang Qing completely flush.

I remember Moinllieon was doing the first 3 Lu Xiaofeng books, and had (at least) gotten to the part where Ye Gucheng and Ximen Chuixue were fighting. Assuming he followed the order of the books he would have completed the aforementioned scene. I don't know where his translation is, though.

In general, I love Jin Yong's elaborate detailing of character's thoughts--often hidden beneath the surface--which are not easily, if at all possible, capturable in adaptions. For a simple example, when Xiao Longnu told Gongsun Zhi that she wanted to leave with Yang Guo, Gongsun asked why. In the novel, it said that Gongsun already knew the answer, but he still couldn't help asking. But on the screen, how can you portray this insistence through gesture or expression? Not possible IMO, the only option would be to insert a character's thought, which is kinda lame for this small detail. But it makes a big difference whether this detail is known, because if the adaption just has Gongsun Zhi ask the question, it makes him look dumber. Whereas the novel made it clear that he was smart enough to know the answer already, only that he needed to ask to satisfy himself.

I'm not sure if this was in the story but here goes anyway.

When Huang Rong was apoligizing to Ke Zhen'e for her father almost killing him and his freaks to accompany Mei Chaofeng in death.

Huang Rong: "Senior Ke Zhen, I'm sorry. My father has a weird temper."
Ke Zhen'e: "Having a weird temper allows you to tell people to die?"

For me, though I have not read the novel, from the adaptations, I love how Little Dragon girl meets Zhou Bo Tong for the first time. I love that interaction between them.

I was hoping during that interlude that Chow Bak Tung would help Little Dragon Girl to develop a sense of humor. Well, it *almost* happened, I guess.

I think I've finally figured out what always bothered me about wuxia women: rare exceptions such as Wong Yung aside, most of them were pretty humorless. Wuxia women tended to take themselves too seriously.

Interesting. Let's start a list of humorous--and I mean INTENTIONALLY humorous, not stupid--characters in each novel. I only know these novels really well:

White Horse, Sword of Yue Maiden: None.

    DGSD

Male: Murong Fu's 2 lackeys, Duan Yu?
    Female: Zhong Ling, Ah Zhu?

    LOCH, ROCH

    Male: Zhou Botong, Hong Qigong
    Female: Huang Rong, Guo Xiang

    HSDS

Male: Fan Yao, Zhang Wuji (on occasion)
Female: Zhao Min, Yin Sau Sau

    SPW

Male: Linghu Chong. The 6 Fairies don't count (because we're looking at intentionally humorous characters)

Female: Feiyan (the gal who died early on), Yingying, when she gets over her shyness.

    Sword Stained with Royal Blood

None, as far as I can tell... golly, that was a glum tale, huh? On occasion, Yuan Chengzhi and Qingqing were funny, I guess?

    DOMD

    Male: Wei Xiaobao, obviously
    Female: er...

Hm, I guess you have a point. I guess women lead to situational comedy (e.g. the Jianling princess), but are themselves not often humorous. But let's think hard--whose fault would THAT be now?

And actually, as we've seen here, it's not as though there are THAT many more humorous men--it's just that the men who are more humorous are allowed to display their humorousness more often.
