    Default YOUUUUUUUUUUUUUU....

By now, most of you probably have heard that horrendously distasteful song by Soulja Boy which begins with a long overhauled "YOUUUUUUUUUUUU....."

It has been the #1 song in America for 8 weeks, a magnificent achievement topped by only few per decade. And, it is a genuinely loved song by the masses, since it has been highly requested on the radio. But after talking to friends, I realized that NONE of us likes this song. And we fail the grasp why anyone would.

So, can anyone explain 2 things to me: 1) Who likes this song--demographically speaking, and 2) Why do they like this song, appeal-wise.

Many thanks for helping me understand this puzzle.

This decade has already seen such horrors as "Who Let the Dogs Out?" and "My Humps" dominate the top of the charts. The 2000s probably will not go down in history as one of pop music's better decades.

It's not that they can't sing, but their words are stupid. 'Who let the dogs out' and 'my hump' that Ken mentioned are very good examples of their stupidity.

And I don't listen to much HK music, because I don't understand the language. So no comment.

The kids who attend my school love this song now because they associate it with a spectacular performance at the homecoming assembly that had this single playing in the background. Music is just more appealing when it is latched onto an experience, an illustration of some sort.

May I ask one piece of information from the both of you: how old are the kids whom you speak of who like this song?

Well, I'm not usually very picky about music... I personally like rap and hip hop a lot. While their lyrics are mostly throwaway stuff, I do like the beats and their voices. But this YOUUUUUUUUUUUUU song, neither the words nor the beats do it for me. It's too slow and lacking the "music" element -- I mean there's little to no background music, just a bunch of useless words being spoken. How is that even considered music? Rappers like 50 cent and Eminem, although they basically talk through their songs, at least they have interesting background music.

I guess we don't appreciate these songs because we're OLD.

I hardly listen to the radio, I did listened to it over the summer. But, rarely listen to the song, so I am less annoyed with it. But, alot has to do with your own taste and preference. There are people who like it and some people who don't. Its like saying, "Do you like country music or do you like hip hop music?" Not everyone going to understand the meanings behind the song.

I don't think we're talking about the style of the song. Because we all know that everyone has their own taste and preference of what kind of music they like. But we're purely discussing the lyrics here. If we take all the songs, country, rap, pop, etc. and just read the words without knowing the music, I'd be disgusted to hear 'my hump, my hump' and 'who let the dogs out' being repeated over and over again. I guess teens nowadays don't listen to the lyrics, they only listen to the instruments and the beat.
