It seems to me that, once they started their defence of Xiangyang at the start of ROCH, they hardly ever left the city, handling all outside matters via their subordinates. From the time they took up the defence (presumably some time after Yang Guo's exit to Quanzhen) through to the withdrawal of the Mongolian army in chapter 39, Guo Jing visited the Mongolian camp to rescue the Wu brothers, and Huang Rong made a couple of trips to rescue Guo Fu/Guo Xiang, and that was it. Huang Rong visited Ancestor Yang's temple, but that's within the defence zone of Xiangyang. Apart from that, there's no mention of any other outside trips, and given that they sent scouts and envoys to gather and send information, and in chapter 39 (the rescue of Guo Xiang) Guo Jing seems very conscious of the need to have him in command, it seems at least possible that they didn't go outside the city at all. Add his ignorance of the existence of the Eagle Hero, attributed to his not having wandered Jianghu, and it seems likely.
