i said something like this to my cousin once. we had relatives visiting from hong kong, and they said to him, your chinese is even better than your cousin's. and he replied, because she's american and i'm really chinese. to which i said, in chinese, you've been in america for 3/4 of your life and have american citizenship. if i'm not really chinese then you're at most 1/2 chinese.

It depends on how u define being Chinese. Is it merely by your race and genes or your culture, beliefs and so on. If u see being Chinese as something physical and biological, then by all means even if u are totally alien to anything Chinese, you're still one physically.

On a side note, with regards to the first post, I would think that being American is more like defining your culture and nationality. I believe you can be an American but take on another culture and ethnic identity at the same time, eg Chinese American, Indian Americans, White Americans etc?

Due to several complaints, I will stop using the terms "Babe" and "Baby" in reference to our female counterpart. They will now be replaced with "B*tch."

Chinese Americans are not Chinese? Huh? I mean, why keep the Chinese in there if they're not Chinese? Chinese Americans - Chinese = Americans. And Americans does NOT equal Chinese because there is no Chinese in it. It's simple as that.

This is ironic that so many elderly mainland chinese think they are better than chinese from the oversea since they are 100% authentic chinese while non mainland chinese are not. However at the same time, the vast majority of mainland chinese wish to imigrate to US, Canada, Australia, ect... Just like FlyingFox mentioned about one ugly bastad american chinese guy who able to find and marry a good hot looking girl from mainland China...

I want to reply back to this because there's something bothering me about this comment.

Yes, but that means most Chinese Americans live in constant paranoia and are too afraid to try to change the status quo. We're always waiting for things to happen instead of wanting to get involve. Sometimes this can put us at a huge disadvantage and we get shafted by the system. For instance, when I was in high school there was this program aimed for Hispanic American teenagers from low-income families with average grades. It was ensured that once enrolled, the student will automatically be granted admission to any CalState university after graduating from high school. What's required is that all the courses the program assigns the student must be passed with a "C" at the very least. I asked my teacher why isn't this program available to Chinese Americans. And you know what he told me, Trien? He told me that Asians are smart and work harder so we don't need the assistance. But the message I got was depending on how a race is stereotypically portrayed, one can receive rewards simply by being an underachiever and the other has to be even more diligent to earn anything regardless coming from the same background.

I'm not criticizing outreach programs for under privilege kids. I was in one myself with a similar purpose and it helped me out tremendously. I just want you to see my point.

I almost completely overlook what you said. You're right, but some purists have the need to completely ignore that and they shouldn't get away trying to strip other people's culture.

Hey, since when are you so insightful? 回光反照?

I've been insightful for a long time. Haven't you noticed that? My intelligence is way above others. I mean, anything that goes on in my brain can't be comprehended by others. Except you, though. That's why you are so intelligent too.

Don't say that. People might take it the wrong the way and think I'm harassing you. Truth is, you're the one who's been driving me to the brink of insanity ever since this started.

Everybody is intelligent but they just pretend to be dumb.

I started this topic to help myself think critically. Then you came in and ruined everything like you usually do. You're like a disease I invited. If you didn't remind me so much of myself I say I hate you.

No, everyone is dumb but they pretend to be intelligent. Otherwise, on that day I ran down the street randomly hitting people with giant piece of tofu, why did they react so harshly? They ran after me cursing and swearing. I saw all of them were so depressed, so I helped them commit suicide. I was helping them. But they only saw the part and only reacted to the part where they got whacked with tofu. And don't you always think critically? I'm helping you too. Hey, I've got a two foot long slab of tofu I made myself. It's a bit smelly, but you can borrow it if you want. And I see what you mean by I'm a disease. My tofu isn't always clean.

If a 40yo man from China says, "You're not Chinese - I'm Chinese," he's not likely asking you for an intellectual discussion of what it means to be "Chinese." That would be an endless debate.

What he's saying is "You're different from me." He can be saying this for any variety of reasons, and for any number of purposes. I'd probably just nod my head and not even touch that issue.

People have a tendency to take similarities for granted, and allow differences to dictate the outcome of their interactions. Even people within the same household/family can find a million ways to separate themselves from one another.

So I wouldn't read into that. I'd probably invest my intellect in something more worthwhile, like how to get more of his money.

One of the most sensible, if not THE most sensible post in response to this debate. Bravo ChuckC.

Sounds to me the guy had an ego problem who projected his personal irritations and underlying insecurities onto Radken in the form of ethnic comparisan.

    40yo CM: You boy!
Radken: *Points at self, mouths me*
40yo CM: Yes, you boy! You Chinese American therefore not real Chinese! *Pleased, satisfied smile*

    ----------------------------------------------------------------

    Translation....

40yo CM: Look at me, you insolent little mut. I demand you pay me proper attention. I am soooooo important, how dare you not be immediately dazzled by my mere presence as soon as I walk through the door!
Radken: So, are you going to buy X, because if not, applications for the circus mascot are next door.
40yo CM: How dare you disrespect your superiors! Look at you, an American faking to be Chinese. Well, I am a pure-blooded Chinese. I am obviously a better person than you.
Radken: So, X will cost $10,000.
40you CM: What?! It's only a carton of milk!
Radken: Don't you know anything...look at the economic crisis man. Everything is expensive these days, you would know that if you were an American Chinese. *Pleased, satisfied smile*

Hey, even my dialogue is relevant to the debate...can't be spam, can it?

I'd just like to make a note about 'not having an identity crisis' (I believe mentioned by Candide). So why not? Does one think our mental processes jump right from:

Baby gaga -> I am perfectly content with no need for exploring inter and intra relationships and related emotions

How the heck does one think we mature and develop psychologically?

The journey for personal identity is unique to every individual. It is also a very primal instinct for approval from others; its a reflection of that social bond interent in all humans.

Congratulations to those who have reached contentment with regard to their own cultural and personal identities, affording the respect for others to do the same in their own time is also as important. I'm very sure lessons learnt by others are just as important as our own.

For the record, I'm an Australian citizen of Chinese/Russian/Mongolian ancestry who can trick Hong Kong Cantonese natives into thinking I'm native Hong Kong too, just by 'tweaking' the accent of my Cantonese...oh the fun! Then again, Hong Kong is such a muti-cultural and cosmopolitan place, 'native' would be a relative term.

I want to believe that. It do not want to be only "American". I'm Chinese born in America, and that is how I identify. ABC.
I love the history, the language, the culture. I'm more traditional than some of my Chinese friends in terms of how I grew up. I think they have a more stereo-typical American upbringinng than I do. I don't speak Mandarin, with my family I speak Chaozhou/Techew, but I've been studying Mandarin intensively for 3 years. I've come to love being Chinese and I don't want to be identified as anyhting other than.

I hate running into people who want to claim me as just American because I speak English without an accent. I want to be well versed in as many languages as possible.
I'm Chinese, born in America, but raised in France (and eventually came back to America). I don't fit into many stereotypes.

I've met people who are Chinese born in China or Taiwan and they discriminate against me because I can speak English without an accent, but I some of the other ABC who speak with an accent are not "ABC", but "Chinese". But those people are just very few and I've only come across a few in my lifetime.

This is a great discussion and I just wanted you all to know that the same tension exists between Africans and African-Americans (a term I don't like, I prefer to be called a black man). Anyway, neither of us identify with each other at all, we just happen to have the same physical features. In fact, it's even a bigger gap than with Chinese/ABC's because most black Americans have never been to Africa, parents and grandparents have never been to Africa, and can't identify their country of African origin.

All of this is really because the government and White America has always forced us to identify ourselves by our racial heritage. It's never been enough to say you're American, regardless if you were born here, were naturalized, etc, unless you're white. There always has to be something to distinguish you from them. White Americans are never referred to as Euro-Americans, they're just Americans, and they don't bother giving you their actual country of origin.

I would say, if you're American call yourself that and don't worry about what people on either side may say about it.

I guess I can understand that a little at least. It's just like how the Chinese in Singaporeans are unable to identify themselves with China Chinese. The link has been disconnected and perhaps even severed, so identification is very difficult unless you work hard at reconnecting.

But it would be extremely difficult, perhaps even impossible for the blacks in the US, since they have been in the US for centuries. And since the blacks' ancestors were taken away as slaves, I assume they did not have the chance to communicate with their family back in Africa like the Chinese in older days' Singapore could.

That's weird. I've heard of how the older generations dislike ABCs who can't speak their language though, and that's because they think the ABCs have abandoned their cultural roots.
