OMG. So. I can finally answer this thread. This is kind of exciting since before I had my steaks I would've totally picked well done

I know I am a total noob, but I had my first steak(s) the other day. It was my first time, but I eat a lot, so I sampled all the degrees of err..."doneness" except for rare because that's a bit too much under what USDA would recommend, and I'm paranoid about food safety. Especially when it comes to meat. I've gone vegetarian for weeks just to avoid sketchy meat. I suppose my paranoia is unfounded though because there's even shit in vegetables nowadays.

So back on topic, medium rare is definitely the best. The texture and firmness is wonderful. I tried medium too because the USDA might like that better, but it's too hard to chew and..."bu gou nen." So medium is pretty much my limit. And for all those of you who like your steaks well done...WOW you are weird! I find well done steaks are way too difficult to chew and "tai lao." Just ignore the redness and eat it!! Raw stuff rocks! Like cookie dough! omg haven't had that for a while...gonna go get out a bucket of cookie dough right now and eat.

Lunar -- ARE YOU CRAZY??? 20 oz steak?!? 10 oz is my limit! Although I probably eat too much junk food before dinner so I never have an appetite during dinner. But dude, Melbourne steak sounds good!! You know who's from Melbourne? JESSE SPENCER!!!!!! I wanna go to Outback Steakhouse.

it sounds like u just gone through a day worth of adventure anyways i have to agree with u, medium rare is the best and 20 oz steak isnt that much actually cause mine was a T-bone, so the bone was (im guessing) already at least 5 pound, so yea... however, i really do recommend outback if u wallet is full of $$$ lol. my steak dinner w/ 3 other friends costed just about $150 including tips and all

Hahaha lunie dear, there are 16 oz in a pound (don't ask me how I know these random conversions), so err I think your guess is more than a bit off since a 5-pound bone alone would be 80 oz

I was totally gonna go to Outback until you mentioned the $150 bill I hope you ordered a lot of food and tip generously, because I never go over $20 a person. I spend way too much on clothes and Starbucks to spend that much on dinner. Is there even anything Australian about Outback anyway? Like there's Canadian bacon at least and fast food is American, but wtf is Australian cuisine?

Okay since I need to build a little steak knowledge besides "doneness," what is the difference between all the different steaks they have on the menu? Like Prime Rib, Angus, Filet Mignon, etc?

lol ok maybe the bone wasnt 5 pounds but yea the steak itself costed $26.99, then we also ordered chili cheese fries or something, and the chocolate down under or something for appetizer and desert. nothing really felt australian exxcept maybe the setting lol. but that was the most expensive dinner ever, i had to eat cup noodles for a month after that dinner to help my wallet recover from the wound

and ur 2nd question... i have no idea lol. im not a regular steak eater either

Anyone ever had Kobe Steak? It's like $100+ per lbs.

ribeye, prime rib, filet mignon, etc. are all different cuts, ie. they all come from different parts of the cow. they vary in taste and texture.

most expensive steak i had....$45 veal mignon. it was good...but not totally awesome or anything. it was about the size of your palm. work paid, so it's all good.

I like a 8~ oz NY Strip cooked to about medium (which I define as the middle being pink but mostly not deep red). Then I make a pan sauce with shallots, beef broth, cream and finish it with butter.

Edit: I'd try making a red wine pan sauce once if my family actually drank red wine because they don't and my dad only likes this one Concord wine which is sweet and I have the feeling that doesn't work too well for this purpose :P

medium rare but I don't eat too much red meat or my stomach's going to be flabby and with no pecs, there's no $3x.

Prime rib, medium. With mashed potatoes.

Some filthy rich Mrs. once "treated" my family to Kobe beef. Apparently the lady flew to Japan to get the beef the day before and home cooked it. It's kinda like blobs of fat evenly spread out in the beef and it tastes like ultra-oily meat. It is expensive stuff of course but was way too oily so my stomach churned after. Once for free is enough.

Depends on the steak itself ...

Ribeye - Medium. I dislike all the blood oozing out onto my side dishes so I prefer to have it medium instead of medium rare.

Prime Rib - Medium rare. Tender and juicy. Perfect combo for me. Since there's usuallying a marinated sauce with the steak, I'm ok with the blood oozing out and slamming that sucker down my throat.

Eating steak in China - Well Done. Can't afford to get sick there. I'm ok with a piece of gum in my mouth for awhile.
