Default Organs for the more deserving?

Purely hypothetical, say you were the director in charge of organ donations and a kidney came in that perfectly matched two people. Both are currently in the hospital right now, and the kidney would save either person's life.

Person A is an upstanding citizen. He is a special needs school teacher in an inner city school, and does charity work on the weekends. He also organizes local fundraisers for the homeless and elderly veterans. He makes $28K a year, and donates 15% of it to his religious community.

Person B used to be a raging alcoholic and a drug user. He partied all the time and was twice accused of rape, but the issues were settled out of court. He was also involved in an incident of beating a person and breaking his arm because of his race. In the last 2 years, he has been to rehab and had kicked his habits when he fell ill. He is a typical millionaire trust fund baby, and his mother is also on the hospital board. His family donates millions of dollars to the facility, and helps raise millions more. His mother has hinted that if her son does not live, she would withdraw all funding to this facility.

To whom do you give this kidney to? Do you base it on the morality of the patients or is that unfair of you to judge? Do you leave it up to chance? Which do you think would be better for society at large? on one hand, you'd be saving an honestly good human being who has tried his hardest to contribute to society. on the other, you'd continue funding for your hospital, possibly saving thousands of lives.

hurry up, you have about 2 minutes to decide! that kidney is on ice right now!

Generally speaking, the rule is 'first come, first serve' when it comes to organ donorship. These things aren't arbitrary; there are 'waitlists' that must be followed.

Unless Person B is on the waiting list first and the rule require me to give it to Person B, then I have no choice. If I was on power and there is no rule that force me to give it to Person B then I would choose Person A. Money is important, but there are other things that are more important than money. Many of you previously accuse me of for the rich and look down on the poor but in reality I am for the rightiousness and look down on the wrong doer regardless of background and circumstance......

    Just to play devil's advocate...

If the organ is given to Person A instead of Person B, and Person B's family pulls millions of dollars worth of funding in the hospital, that could prevent the hospital from saving Person C, D, E, and F, who would were equally worthy people as Person A. In other words, by attempting to be 'for the righteous', you could potentially cause great harm; perhaps the hospital might even be forced to shut down, leaving the area without coverage. How does that affect your viewpoint?

The easy path is giving the kidney to Person B and everything is solve but sometimes in life you have to choose the right but hard path instead of the wrong and easy path. We should not let the rich and powerful dictates everything, we must stand out for what is right. Financial situation should not be a factor in this case. Unless this is a private/ForProfit hospital with no government fund where making money is the main objective and the kidney was bought by the hospital, then it becomes a different situation.

i don't see how choosing person A is "harder." and why should financial situation not be a factor when you're taking into account the life person A has led so far. so the other guy doesn't deserve to live because he has money? or maybe, because someone does charity, he deserves to live more? what about us common saps that are in between? do we deserve organs less than charity workers, but more than rich douchebags?

That is very true. It depends on who got their names on the list first. No matter how hard it is to see person B get it, if his name was first, he gets it. No questions.

Yea but I bet if the president needed a new heart his name would magically be on the top of the list.
Due to several complaints, I will stop using the terms "Babe" and "Baby" in reference to our female counterpart. They will now be replaced with "B*tch."

The more deserving? Option A. But who will get it is more complicated.

If both on waiting list - whoever is higher up gets it. Person B may not make it on the waiting list given his background, but 2 yr rehab is good. Whoever is in a critical condition may get it earlier by jumping ahead. Age - younger more likely to have transplant. Other diseases that may complicate transplant. Compliance - whether Person B can deal with regular medications to prevent rejection. Magic - Person B might magically go higher up given the family funding.

sometimes things are not right or wrong. most things are in the grey area and i think this should be 1 of those things. even tho person B is on the higher waiting list, person A should get the organ. (if i was the doctor, i'll give it to person A in a heartbeat)

Like other member mention that by choosing person A, the hospital will loss millions of funding and might have to shut down.

and why should financial situation not be a factor when you're taking into account the life person A has led so far. so the other guy doesn't deserve to live because he has money?
I am not choosing person B not because he has money, but because he is an ahole. If Person B is an upstanding rich guy and Person A is a poor ahole guy, I would definitely choose Person B.

or maybe, because someone does charity, he deserves to live more? what about us common saps that are in between? do we deserve organs less than charity workers, but more than rich douchebags?
No, if you are a decent person (good clean record) then you are deserve the organs just like other people. However, the the criminals (rich or poor) or alcoholic, drug adict, they should be at the bottom of the list. I would say they are less deserving.

I would prefer to give it to Person A, but it will be unethical for a doctor. Besides, who are we to judge such situations?

I will go with RWX on this... first come first serve.
