    Introduction
SP, the duty to protect. Professional bodyguards that safeguard important people even if it at times means sacrificing their own lives.

In the 21st century, regarded as the century of terror, Japan's myth of infallibility is greatly threatened. With domestic and foreign terrorists active behind the scenes, and pleasure-seeking criminals with no political ideology able to easily obtain information from the internet, an era in which terrorism can be carried out has gradually dawned. The role played the SP in protecting domestic and foreign VIPs has become varied and crucial. Bodyguards who guard important people with their own lives as "moving shields", locate "moving shield blind spots" beforehand as well as anticipate unforeseen circumstances have been increased on an experimental basis.

Inoue Kaoru is assigned to this new role. Inoue possess special abilities, and is an entirely new type of SP. He will boldly take on the fight against terrorism as section personnel regard those abilities with skepticism.

    Cast
    Okada Junichi as Inoue Kaoru

    Characters

    Okada Junichi as Inoue Kaoru
Member, Mobile Security Squad, 4th Security Division. Rank: Police sergeant.
When he was young, Inoue lost both his parents in an act of terrorism, and was taken in and raised by a police career bureaucrat. The politician who had been the intended target at that time is now the Prime Minister. As a result of the cruel experience Inoue encountered at the site of his parents' deaths, his five senses were heightened. He has photographic memory and also the special ability of "tracking" which enables him to draw clues from footprints that are left behind. For this reason, he has tacit permission to act according to the situation on-site even though he works as an ordinary SP. As for Inoue, he has to contend with the trauma to his psyche as well as conflicts in the job to ward off terrorism.

    Tsutsumi Shinichi as Ogata Soichiro
Section Chief, Mobile Security Squad, 4th Security Division. Rank: Chief inspector.
Formerly from Tokyo University's law faculty, Ogata has the ability to be a career elite but he daringly enters the police agency as a regular recruit. Moreover, he skips the promotion exam in order to go out into the field. Ogata was actually at the scene of terror which killed Inoue's parents. That experience made him decide to become a SP. He has experience training with the Secret Service and is an active reformist in the police organisation. He quickly acknowledges Inoue's ability and brings him in as his subordinate. However, the enigmatic Ogata's real motive for doing so is unclear.

    Maki Yoko as Sasamoto Eri
Member, Mobile Security Squad, 4th Security Division. Rank: Police sergeant.
An attractive and passionate person. Eri’s marksmanship far surpasses men because she was a former Olympic sharpshooter but her parents have beseeched her to quit being a SP. As Inoue's colleague, she acknowledges his ability among the many members who are negative about the new police protection method.

    Kamio Yuu as Ishida Mitsuo
Member, Mobile Security Squad, 4th Security Division.
Divorced. He equips himself with a photo of his 3-year-old daughter as his lucky charm each time he is mobilised. Ishida is the type who is taciturn, strong-willed, and a man of action. He is respected by everyone in the department.

    Matsuo Satoru as Matsumoto Takafumi
Member, Mobile Security Squad, 4th Security Division.
He's an eccentric who aims to be a mix martial arts fighter. Matsuo believes that a SP's hair should be style 7:3. He views Inoue, who is his contemporary, as his rival. He is in danger of breaking up with a girl he has dated since high school due to his hectic job.

    Hirata Atsuko as Harakawa
    General Clerk, Police Escort Department.
She's in charge of all the department's general affairs. Harakawa's secretly infatuated with Ogata.

    Egami Shingo as Nakao Yoshiharu
    Chief, 4th Security Division.
He's a worldly wise man who has scaled to the ranks of chief even though he is a non-career official. Egami hopes receive his retirement peacefully and uneventfully, which is why he is tough on Ogata and Inoue. However, because of his long experience on the field, he, more than anyone else, is familiar with the difficulties of SPs.

    Iida Kisuke as Nishijima Yuji
    Commissioner, Police Escort Department.
The superior who manages the entire department. As a man of the organisation, he has his opinions but he understands and also personally accepts the new police protection methods of Inoue and the rest. Because Ogata and him were both from Tokyo University's law faculty, their relationship is actually that of senior and junior.

    Nomaguchi Toru as Tanaka Ichiro
    Public Security Department Section 1.
Adept at elusively conducting undercover investigations. Tanaka is disliked by those around him because he noses around within the police. He is Inoue's contemporary and he acknowledges Inoue's ability.

    Yamamoto Kei as Asada Yuuzo
    Prime Minister.
Although a virtual nobody while he was a member of the House of Representatives, he was viewed as a hero for protecting the young Inoue during the terrorist incident. That caused him to become a staunch hard-liner on the terrorism issue. Aided by his skillful oratory, he gained immense popularity, leading to his current position.

The press conference for SP, which started airing on 3 November, was held in Tokyo on 29 October. It was attended by Okada Junichi, Tsutsumi Shinichi and Maki Yoko.

Inoue Kaoru, who acquired acute five senses from the trauma he experienced as a child when his parents were killed in an act of terror, teams up with his boss Ogata and his colleague Sasamoto to face terrorists in order to safeguard Japan's security.

"My role is just that of a useless old chap so it would be difficult for me to change into a boss who can get into the action but Okada-kun is, as always, cool no matter what he does," Tsutsumi who co-starred with Okada in the 2005 movie, Fly Daddy Fly, praised. "I said to Kaneshiro-san, 'Let's do a drama that hasn't been done in Japan before. This production is precious to me. If it isn't accepted, I think I'd go on a trip. I'm wagering on this."

Okada who last starred in the drama Tiger & Dragon with Nagase Tomoya two years ago confessed, "Until two years ago I'd pretend and say that audience ratings are none of my business but this time I want audience ratings. It looks bad but I really think so," Okada appealed earnestly.

    EMERGENCY
Inoue Karo has a strong desire to marry. But even at a gokon on the day he is off duty, he has to immediately respond when he receives a call to work. Because Section 4, which appears in the drama, are reinforcement personnel when there are vacant positions for the persons in charge in Sections 1 to 4, calls have been made to increase the number of SP.

    FLY, DADDY, FLY
The 2005 movie Fly, Daddy, Fly was written by Kaneshiro Kazuki and was the first time Okada and Tsutsumi Shinichi acted together. It is a memorable production in which the three of them met. Okada played a high school student Sun Shin, and Tsutsumi played Suzuki, a middle-aged man who learnt fighting from Sun Shin.

    GROUP
Inoue, Sasamoto, Yamamoto, Ishida and Ogata belong to the mobile security squad of Section 4 of the Police Agency's Security Police Division. But the only time they see each other is when they're fitting their gear on or awaiting orders.

    HARD
Okada says it is the first time he has experienced an oxygen capsule in an attempt to recover from the fatigue of filming.

    ITEM
SP gear includes badge, notebook, Maglite, special police baton, receiver, hand cuff, and revolver. Contrary to its appearance the baton is very heavy.

    JOKE
Expectations that this is a serious drama are unexpectedly dispelled by Inoue. According to Okada, "They try to chip at his vulnerable spots so he can't be a perfect superman. The gokon scene is also for this purpose."

    KEY PERSON
Inoue's boss, Ogata Soichiro. He was from Tokyo University's Law faculty but joined the Police Agency on an ordinary appointment. In order to remain at the frontline, he boldly declined to take the promotion exam. He, in fact, encountered Inoue at the scene of terrorism where Inoue's parents were killed, and became a SP because of that experience.

    LADY
A former Olympic sharpshooter and the only woman in the security police force - Sasamoto Eri. Maki Yoko who stars as Sasamoto has acted in Watashitachi no Kyokasho, Furin Kazan and other dramas. She collaborated with director Motohiro Katsuyuki in the 2006 movie Udon.

    MOTOHIRO KATSUYUKI
The director and producer who garnered attention with the drama Odoru Daisousasen in 1997. It has been 6 years since he directed his last drama, Antique.

    NEGOTIATOR
Director Motohiro actually did a part two to his film Negotiator Mashita Masayoshi because such a poster appeared in the scene at the movie theatre in episode 1.

    OKADA JUNICHI
When he was young, Inoue lost both his parents in an act of terrorism, and was taken in and raised by a police career bureaucrat. As a result of the cruel experience Inoue encountered at the site of his parents' deaths, his five senses were heightened, and he possesses special abilities. This is Okada's first lead role in a Fuji TV drama.

    PRODUCER
Producer Takai Ichiro has helmed works like Beach Boys, Weather Forecaster's Lover, Antique, Slow Dance, One Million Stars Falling from the Sky, Yakusha Damashi.

    QUESTION
During his childhood, Inoue witnessed his parents die as part of of a terror attack. The politician who was the target of that attack, is the present Prime Minister. He encountered Ogata on the scene. There are various questions surrounding this incident.

    ROMANCE
There is interest in whether romance will blossom between Inoue and Sasamoto, the only woman but Okada says "There's no need for love ... ". Will love develop?

    SECURITY POLICE
The Security Police is modelled on American Secret Service which was established to protect VIPs involved in national politics. A police sergeant is typically chosen from police officers who have more than a year of experience and undergone special training. Because SPs are full-time police responsible only for protection, they don't conduct criminal investigations, control traffic, etc.

    TRACKING
A special ability that Inoue possesses. Tracking is an ability to understand a person's physical traits from the footprints left behind. Furthermore, he also has the ability to predict a terror incident involving a criminal that resembles himself?

    UNIQUE
It is said that SPs become "moving shields", sacrificing themselves for VIPs in times of emergency. Inoue, who possesses special abilities, is an experimental addition, joining the force as an SP able to detect "blind spots of moving shields" beforehand.

    VIP
The VIP Inoue and the rest of the team protect in episode 1 is the governor, Ogawa Yuko. She receives their protection at the movie theatre, the press conference room for regular meetings, stump speech on the streets and various locations.

    WRITER
Script writer Kaneshiro Kazuki made his debut in 1998 with Revolution No. 3. In 2000, he won the 123rd Noaki Prize for Go as an up-and-coming author. This is the first time he is working on a drama script.

    XL
Sandaimeuotakehamadashigeo plays the giant Inoue gets into a scuffle with in episode 1. Director Motohiro Katsuyuki has been wooing him for a long time and had many rounds of drinks. This time he finally obtained Sandaimeuotakehamadashigeo's agreement to act.

    YOUNG STYLE
It is said that an SP's basic hairstyle follows a ratio of 7:3 but Yamamoto is the only one in Section 4 to keep this hairstyle. Inou'e 7:3 can be seen only in the badge he carries with him but in there is news that in episodes 2 - 4 there'll be scenes in which he sports the 7:3 hairstyle.

    ZERO HOUR
The autumn dramas usually start airing in October and end in December. However, this production begins in November and ends in January due to the new year. Attention is on whether this is the new style for dramas.

Episode 1: Stop the Assassination Attempt on the Tokyo Governor

    click to show/hide spoilers
Security target: Tokyo governor, Ogawa Yuko
Team: Toyosu Cinema Complex - Ogata, Inoue; Others - Ogata, Ishida, Sasamoto, Yamamoto, Inoue
Person(s) arrested: Big man, news reporter Goda

As a child, Inoue Kaoru experienced trauma when his parents were caught up and killed in an act of terror. This resulted in his possession of special powers. One day, at a matchmaking party he is attending, he focuses on the girls and "synchro", his ability to get a variety of information on other people from his full five senses, starts to work, putting a damper on proceedings. At that moment, he receives an urgent call from his section chief, Ogata Soichiro, who orders him to guard the governor, Ogawa Yuko.

At the same time, in the room of an apartment in Tokyo, a big man corresponds with someone through email regarding an assault on the governor.

The location Inoue rushes to is Toyosu cinema complex. As the place swarms with media and the public, Inoue notices a suspicious-looking big man walking using a cane and secretly shadows him. The big man suddenly rushes at him with a knife in his hand. Inoue fights back and captures him but there is no conclusive proof that that man is a terrorist.

The next morning, Inoue and Ogata are summoned to the department chief, Nakao Yoshiharu's office and reprimanded. An SP's job is the use one's body to protect VIPs and not to catch criminals. Ogata, who has been looking for new security methods counters by asking, "Are SPs to remain moving walls forever?" but Nakao deflects it by telling him to ask their superiors.

In the midst of this, Inoue, Sasamoto Eri and other SPs head to the conference room at the city hall as they continue their protection of the governor. Because Inoue, who is focusing and doing "synchro" for security purposes, appears to be in a daze, the secretary of the governor finds him an eyesore and hinderance and orders him to standby in the waiting room. However, no one has any way of finding out the resentment Goda, a news reporter in the conference room, has for the governor.

As the tense protection amid the crowds continues at the venue of a stump, museum, television recording, and other locations, Inoue and the rest return to the city hall's conference room once again. During the conference, the SPs are on standby in the waiting room but Inoue, who has a vague foreboding, defies the secretary and enters the conference room. Then, at that precise moment, Goda points his gun at the governor and shoots. Inoue immediately reacts to protect the governor from the bullet, and subdues Goda as he attempts another shot.

At that moment, the big man who had been arrested days earlier but was released receives an email that reads "Shall we get it under way again?".

Nope I'm not. I'm helping for some episodes of Iryu 2. That's about all. Subbing is exhausting work. Querbeet has subbed up to Ep 2 for SP.

SP is an interesting and entertaining drama despite its flaws. Especially so since there's Okada Junichi and Tsutsumi Shinichi. It's an insight into Japan's Security Police procedures and missions and if its depiction is true to reality, the Japanese Security Police system is seriously in big need of an overhaul.

The doctor diagnoses it as an increase in the concentration of nerve growth factor in the blood. SP's Special advances to the Golden Hour

Fuji TV's Security Police (SP) which airs late night on Saturdays (11.30 p.m. ~) will have a special broadcast on 5 April during the 9.00 p.m. golden time slot. The drama, which has 11 episodes, will end its run this week but has already averaged a high viewership rating of 15.0% for the ten episodes that have been aired. Okada Junichi said, "I'm happy I can make another story again with this wonderful team."

Fuji's Saturday drama is a new drama time slot that began last April. Liar Game and Life which were broadcast before Security Police, both posted high ratings in the same Saturday time slot.

Security Police, the third such production, began airing on 3 November. It is the first drama script written by Naoki Prize winning author Kaneshiro Kazuki and sheds light on the world of the security police whose real lives have never been depicted before this.

According to Fuji TV's producer Takai Ichiro, the chronological sequence of the 11 episodes will be modified and re-edited in the special drama. "It will be a new configuration for new viewers as well as regular viewers," he said with great confidence. It will reveal a "secret" not illustrated in the last episode about the character of the protagonist, Inoue, and also new scenes that have already been filmed.

    Episode 3: Eliminate the Terrorists!

    click to show/hide spoilers
Security target: Former Prime Minister, Kato Junzo
Composition of team: Daiwa Hospital - Sasamoto, Inoue
    Person(s) arrested: -

During the assignment, Inoue Kaoru leaves Daiwa hospital after it is decided that Sasamoto Eri and him will take turns to have their meals, but he feels a peculiar sense of uneasiness and turns back. The surgery on former Prime Minister Kato Junzo proceeds smoothly as the surgical team is oblivious to what is happening outside the operating theatre. Kaneda and the other five terrorists tie up Sasamoto, threaten the doctors, nurses and patients with firearms and assemble them at the first floor lobby. Inoue, who has returned to the hospital, swiftly assesses the situation, disguises himself as a doctor and moves to the lobby. Kaneda calls the former Prime Minister's wife, Kimie, at the Kato residence and tells her to summon her husband's secretary to the house after his compatriots notify him that the situation has been brought under control.

Before long news of the seige of Daiwa hospital reaches the metropolitan police agency, and an emergency meeting is held. Ogata is called to the meeting room and informed that there is mounting suspicion from the Public Security Bureau which questions if Sasamoto and Inoue had leaked the information. He is incensed that the department has been excluded from the investigation and leaves for the scene as instructed by Commissioner Nishijima.

The Kato residence receives a call from Kaneda. Kaneda gets Kato's secretary on the phone and orders him pay the ransom in the form of share trades. At that moment, police cars, detectives and officers surround the outside of the hospital. Even the SAT team has been deployed. A smile of delight flashes across Kaneda's face as he watches this scene. He calls the Kato residence once again and starts instructing the secretary on share trading.

As the share trading starts, Inoue, who has found out Sasamoto's whereabouts from the head nurse, Tominaga, while he surveyed the movements of the terrorists in the lobby, starts to take action. He announces that he wants to go to the toilet, brings down Numata who has come along to keep an eye on him, and heads to the physiotherapy room where Sasamoto is being confined together with Tominaga...

Episode 4: Rescue the Former Premier!

    click to show/hide spoilers
Security target: Former Prime Minister, Kato Junzo
Composition of team: Daiwa Hospital - Sasamoto, Inoue
Person(s) arrested: Kaneda, Akagi, Yoshino, Numata, Kakihara, Kobayashi

Inside the hospital which has been sealed off from the outside world, Inoue Kaoru starts to mount a counterattack on the terrorists. After securing Numata on 1F, Inoue, together with Tominaga, the head nurse, rescue Sasamoto Eri who has been confined in the physiotherapy room. Tominaga says they should immediately ask for help from outside. As Inoue rummages about in the room, he declares that Sasamoto and himself will secure the terrorists without killing them for the safety of former Prime Minister Kato, who is still undergoing surgery, and the patients confined in the lobby. He adds that the remaining five people are either soldiers or former soldiers.

At the same time, the leader Kaneda, who is unaware of Inoue's movements, gives the secretary of former Prime Minister Kato Junzo instructions on the ransom from his location at the nurse station on 5F. The area surrounding the hospital is crowded with curious onlookers and police cars. The SAT team position snipers on all sides of the hospital and begin preparations for an assault.

At that moment, Ogata Soichiro, who has arrived at the scene, is contacted by Inoue on his mobile phone. Inoue says that former Prime Minister Kato, Sasamoto and himself are safe inside the hospital. He requests a delay in the SAT assault and heads to 2F with Sasamoto to subdue the terrorists. Inoue and Sasamoto cleverly make use of the medicine and devices within the hospital to secure Kakihara on 2F, Kobayashi on 3F and Akagi on 4F. Some time later, the sudden movement of the front-line positions causes confusion. Ogata contacts Commissioner Nishijima in order to stop them from taking action but because Prime Minister Asada, a staunch hard-liner on terrorism, has assumed command, Nishijima replies that he can't put in a word.

Kaneda and Yoshino, who have closed the deal and obtained the ransom, receive an email that says "please come to verify the identity of an SP" from Numata on 1F. When Kaneda makes his way out, Sasamoto, who has lain in wait on 5F, swiftly knocks Yoshino out. And at the physiotherapy room on 1F, Inoue comes face to face with Kaneda. Kaneda aims a gun at Inoue and pulls the trigger. In that instant, the physiotherapy room explodes. Inoue, who had anticipated that, instantly jumps into the tub, protecting himself from the blaze and blast; and later secures Kaneda.

As the hostages are being released, Inoue comes over to Ogata and tells him that he wants to be on duty until the former Prime Minister's surgery is over. Then Sasamoto and him continue their protection. The surgery soon ends. Inoue and Sasamoto leave their posts at the hospital ward after being summoned by the Public Safety Commission. As they make their way out, they see members of the Kato family who have rushed over because of their worry ...

I found the SP team really incompetent at times, especially in the final story. I mean come on...

ONE guy with ONE gun (a handgun, no less) was able to take down all those supposedly highly trained SP who tried to protect the target ONE by ONE!?!?!?

SP became frustratingly disappointing as it progressed towards its finale. Not just for its penchant for having long recaps at the beginning but also the story telling. It is hard to believe that this drama is an attempt to depict the little-known role of security police personnel in Japan because it has certainly done a shoddy job at it and only managed to make those in the profession look like incompetent, thick-headed fools.

Which criminal ever gets so much time to say his piece before the police take him out? No one thought to call for back up and no one could get an aim at him - an old man who's never used a gun in his life.

One thing I don't get is why the sniper used a paint gun to shoot the premier after going through all that trouble? It wouldn't have been difficult to eliminate him. Was it meant to be a warning but went horribly wrong when Yamanishi appeared?

No kidding, right? I know in many series criminals get time to give spiels about the motivation behind crimes they've committed, allowing time for police or some other heroic party to come to the rescue, but this was ridiculous.

Yeah, I think the paint job was just a warning (unfortunately, IMO) and no one expected Yamanishi to really show up for revenge.
