    Default Mahjong Anyone?

    Do you play Mahjong?
    Enjoy it?
How often do you play Mahjong?
Do you even have a clue what it is?

    etc.

    Debate.

All Chinese know what mahjong is and many Chinese play mahjong.
I play the game but not that well, like a chicken, so they say

We should have a Spcnet online mahjong tournament, if there is sufficient interest(played on Yahoo games or other sites).

I want to learn! Are the rules very hard?
I would love to change the world, but they won't give me the source code.

I learnt MJ recently. THe rules aren't hard - just a bit of memorising with the points system, but to get good at it takes time. If you play poker or other strategy/probability games, it doesn't take long to understand.

    Great game (but prefer poker).

I love MJ! I am actually pretty good at it. I can end up on the winning side even when I play my uncles and aunts who have played for decades. I don't get to play it often though.

I play Poker more (Texas Hold'em). Americanized Chinese folks don't like MJ much.

Shanghai style MJ has so many extra ways of scoring "faans." HK style is boring in comparison. Only 4 faans maximum. And Japanese style... 3 extra tiles! Wassup with that?

yes, i enjoy playing mahjong. my longest record was 2 days with 4 other players. that is, we took turns to play. of course with toilet breaks, makan in between. after the game, i have my longest sleep too - 16 hours non-stop. my mum was worried but not scared because i was breathing.
though, nowadays, i only played mahjong during cny.

Well the basic rules of mahjong are similar but the scoring system varies from culture to culture (Singapore, HK, Taiwan etc). The rules may be confusing unless you've got friends who actually take time to explain to you the strategy involved and rationale for some of the rules (at a glance some rules may not make sense)

There are many who mistake the 4 greatest Chinese inventions to be Gunpowder, Compass, Paper, and Printing. They are sorely mistaken to have excluded Mahjong...

What makes mahjong fun for me is all the special combos and colourful names... it's like playing Streetfighter ^^

That's why it's good to have at least a one faan minimum rule, but if you play with flowers... just by dumb luck you could have a chicken hand and still qualify with enough faans.

i can give u private sessions haha kidding just go to yahoo and play on the beginners, usually u can learn by urself. once u get the hang of pongs and kongs and "chows" (that isnt the real term for that word, it suppose to be shang), then u can read the rest of the rules in the yahoo site.

    very basic stuff

if u have 2 tiles that are the same and some1 hit that tile that is same as urs, u can pong it, so basically u just take that tile and take ur 2 and put them together on the outside of the table

then for kong its.... sigh u probably didnt understand anything i said earlier lol i recommend u just play around on yahoo or ask ur parents im sure they know

4 person mahjong is so long-winded and boring, give me the malaysian style 3 person mahjong - more fast paced etc.

Anyone can teach me the basics behind counting the "fan"?

I learnt how to play MJ at the age of 4 and a half So I guess I'm pretty pro at it.

I find there's no point in winning a 'chicken woo'; best to 'zi mo' a 'shi san yiu'.

Excuse my terrible attempt at pinyin.
