Backpacking/Hostel vs Hotel

i just watched hostel 2 recently. (i'm a psycho, i like that kind of movie) i will never ever ever EVER stay in a hostel. i'm just not that kind of girl. i prefer a nice hotel in the city near transportation.

but i know a lot of people like to backpack and stay in hostels. which do you prefer? pros and cons?

pros of a nice hotel - less chance of me getting kidnapped and used in some sick game of human operation for rich people.

If you feel unease staying at a hostel alone, travel with friends. Staying at a hostel is bad if you have done your research prior to the trip.

pros:
1. save lots of $. Can you afford to travel over 3+ months staying at $200+ hotel? I have stayed at 5-star hotels that cost over $400 a night. It's a waste since I only come back to shower and sleep.

I'd rather stay in a cheap hotel than a hostel. I think I'll be in contant paranoia that someone will go through my belongings and steal my stuff while I'm not there. Worse case yet, you may even meet some crazy people like in the movie. Right, Pem?

When I backpacked through Europe last summer, I was sorely disappointed none of the exciting events that took place in the movie happened to me. My experience with Hostels are great in Japan and pretty good in Europe. The food is better and the price is a lot cheaper and you meet a lot of random people. I met a 7ft blind Russian guy, he looked liked a blind serial killer/cannibal.

If your carrying expensive items or not an adventure seeker, stick to an hotel. Unless, you go to room 1408.
