An Empress and the Warrirors (aka The Kingdom and a Beauty) starring Kelly Chen, Donnie Yen, Leon Lai, Guo Xiao Dong, Kou Zhen Hai and directed by Tony Ching.

Plot:

The film’s storyline is set in a period where the country is at war and dukes of the different kingdoms battle for land and power. Kelly plays Princess Fei- er who is commanded by her dying father on the battlefield to defend their country with General Xue-hu (played by Donnie). The princess is later attacked and injured by the treacherous official Hu Ba (played by Guo), but is rescued by Leon’s character Duan Lan-quan, whom she falls in love with. Faced with continued attack from outside and within, the princess must make some important decisions to ensure the survival of herself and her country.

sounds like a typical war drama w princess falling in love here and there

but ive always loved war movies, so yeah, with donnie in it maybe id give it a chance

Ahaha 'cool' type. Yeah that shouldn't be a problem. Alot of expessionless staring and a frown here and there every once in awhile hahahha! Action films have alot of them.

Just saw the movie. Better than any wuxia or epic flick I have seen made in years. Donnie Yen delivers, Kelly Chen looked beatiful, and Leon Lai is suave as always.

I actually found it disappointing. I watched the Mandarin version BTW. Kelly's Mandarin leaves a lot to be desired (think Chow YF and Michelle Yeoh in Crouching Tiger).

The movie starts off well with large scale fighting among 2 kingdoms during the Warring States period if I'm not wrong. Very quickly, it degenerates into insignifant in-fighting within the Yen kingdom, where the nephew of the king rebels against the chosen successor, chosen by the orginally chosen successor (confusing right?, no more spoilers from me ). That's fine, but then it degenerates further into a weak love story where balloons play a major part.

Even so, the fighting scenes are OK, although not that we have not seen better from Donnie.

I wouldn't say ballons play a major part but yeah, some elements definatelly didn't belong in the movie like the Robinson Crusoe tree house, chariots, and did you notice how Kelly Chen looked really Korean?

*examines pics* Hmmm... Donnie and Kelly's helmets and armour look like medieval knights, but hey at least they look much better than the Japanese ones in Resurrection of the Dragon.

Leon looks funny, hehe, yeah he has aged a bit.

Hopefully Donnie lifts up this movie.

I always thought Kelly chen spoke pretty good mandarin, but of course i'm in no position to say so...it doesn't sound as bad as some of the HK'ers =p

I would like to watch it in Canto, but i've always doubed Kelly Chen, i've seen her act before and .... there's not that many facial expressions imo. So something like this that needs to have quite a big facial expression for war cires etc ...... not sure if she can pull it off =D, Plus Donnie Yen us a must, Leon ..... i prefer him in cool modern clothing LOL, cos i think he kinda gives off a more sophisticated modern look...rather than ancient stuff.
