Default Who was the monk who defended Luk Tzin Yeun from Lee Mok Sau?

Yeah, it's Lee Mok Sau Day.

Who was that monk in ROCH who protected Luk Tzin Yeun and his bride, Ho Yeun Gwun, from a joint attack on their wedding ceremony by Lee Mok Sau and Mo 3 Tung? Even though it was ten years before the beginning of ROCH proper, Lee Mok Sau and Mo 3 Tung were not pushovers in martial arts, and this monk was able to overpower both of them. They were also intimidated enough by him to stay away for ten years.

    So a few questions:

    1. Who was this monk?

    2. What was the level of his martial arts, and what were the origins of his martial arts skills?

    3. What happened after the ten years? Why did he stop protecting the Luk family (Luk Tzin Yeun and Ho Yeun Gwun were dead, but there was still Luk's younger brother Luk Lap Ding and his family)? Did the monk die during the intervening years?

    4. By the time Lee Mok Sau returned at the beginning of ROCH, had her martial arts reached a level adequate to defeat that monk should he try to get in her way again?

This monk is a member of the Celestial Temple of Dali if ROCH95 is correct. BTW have you started rewatching ROCH yet?

I remember that from ROCH '95, but I don't buy into it. Still, it wouldn't surprise me if the monk had Dali connections (but if that's the case, one wonders why he and Mo 3 Tung weren't acquainted with each other).

I'm just starting a new cycle of ROCH '83 this week, so hence, today's curiosity about Lee Mok Sau.

Ken, how good is the 83 version compared with the other versions?

So far I've watched the 95 ROCH and 06 ROCH (so I'm only missing the 83 version), and I have to admit that even though 95 have the more preferable cast, I'd still rather watch the 06 version. The girls are definitely hotter and the scenery is breathtaking compared to the cheap stages of the 95 version.

ROCH '83 had the best cast and the best acting. It likely had the worst special effects (just because it was older) and the scenery and props were nothing to write home about (except for a twilight beach sequence with Yeung Gor and Luk Mo Seung that was just a beautiful piece of cinematography that really highlighted the natural beauty of Hong Kong's bays and beaches). Accuracy to the novel wise, it was neither the best nor the worst Jin Yong adaptation (it got the story right, but characterized Yeung Gor and Little Dragon Girl in a way that made them less likeable characters than in the novel, apparently, despite being played by two very capable and well-liked actors in Andy Lau and Idy Chan). This was actually Jin Yong's favorite adaptation of his work for many years, so if it has the endorsement of The Man himself, it must be pretty good.

I saw a DVD version of ROCH83 at some VCD/DVD store and I wanted to buy it but after I checked the price I went then I

It was about $150 for the whole set and I'm not even sure if it's worth it or not. And the chance that it could have been a bootleg copy doesn't help.

I'm with Ken here. Yes, ROCH '06 was purty and showed the subtle problems of the YG/XLN relationship well (XLN was both motherly and wifely to YG, which was slightly unsettling... and explains why wulin was creeped out by their relationship). But Huang "I'm a screaming ape" Xiaoming did not charm as YG. As for ROCH '95: I couldn't get past the wooden acting of Louis Koo and Carmen Lee :/ ROCH '83 may not have been faithful to the novel, but the acting was reasonably good--it's #1 in my head

Go to Yesasia.com and order it online. If it's issued by TVBI or Tai Seng, it's legit, it's complete, and it's of surprisingly good quality (the picture is so clear that you'll WISH it wasn't, because that old fuzzy 1980s picture quality hid multiple sins as far as makeup and cheap props were concerned). These days, I think the whole set retails for only around $80 or so.

His crying scenes were so fake and he just kept screaming, lol.

Louis and Carmen were pretty good at acting...acting emotionless

lol, except that wasn't in the script (except for XLN, who *is* emotionless, but despite what Carmen Lee/the director of ROCH '95 might think, NOT a dimwit)

i have bought and watched both ROCH83 and ROCH06. I liked ROCH83's acting but found the special effects were not as good as compared to ROCH06. Also the scenery in 83 version is not as nice as the 06 one...

Taken from ROCH chapter 1 in wuxiapedia site:

    ---
“Your sister-in-law He Yuanjun was an orphan. We took her in and she became our stepdaughter. We loved her dearly. Eventually she met your brother, and they fell in love with each other, and wanted to get married. Firstly, my husband didn’t want her to leave the family; secondly, he was too strict saying Jiangnan people were crafty and cunning; they can’t be relied upon and forbade the wedding. Ah Yuan secretly ran away with your brother. On the wedding day, both my husband and Li Mochou went to find the couple and cause them trouble. Luckily, a high monk from the Dali Sky Dragon temple passed by and took the matter in his own hands. He requested, on his behalf, that they would grant the couple ten years of peace. Li Mochou and my husband agreed to this. My husband was angry, and after this event he became confused and disturbed; his teacher, fellow students and even I were unable to persuade him, or understand him. He just counted down the ten-year deadline. According to my calculations, today ten years exactly has passed. It was hard to predict that the couple would not enjoy the ten years of bliss that they had been granted.” She dropped her head after she finished, her whole face changed to a mournful look.
    ---

His name wasn't mentioned, I can't recall if there are other chapters where his name was mentioned. I'm guessing it must be Southern Emperor Yideng.

Trust me man, you are missing at least like 4 other adaptations of ROCH, not just the 83 one.

Singapore, Taiwan 80s, Taiwan 90s, RTV...

    So true indeed!

Ken Cheng, another alternative would be to learn Chinese and read the original novels. That way you will get the full experience.
