I mean, every huge adaptation will require alot of money. Besides most of those actors are beginning actors so they are relatively cheap. The only ones that I would imagine that will request alot of money would be Gillian Chung since she is not signed with TVB, Joe Ma, Gigi Lai, and Sonija Kwok since they are all veteran actors.

Not sure if this is correct but if that is the case then, my mistake. I thought "fa dan" refers to big sisters. I thought those were all "siu fa". That actually makes more sense to me.

Anyways, I'm pretty sure all of those actors are relatively cheap, except for Joe Ma, Sonija, and Gigi Lai due to experience. I'm sure Gillian would be pricey too since she is a big screen superstar.

Just look at some past big series. Secret of the Heart, Threshold of an Era, Legendary 4 Aces. Those cast are definitely up to par with this list.

I have actually thought about this but I just can't imagine any 5 that would be comparable to the 80's adaptations. Just get the original 5 greats out of retirement, lol...

are sure that is what "fa dan" mean? anywayz, tvb is notorious for paying actors and actresses really cheap, so I don't think artists' fees will be so bad.

When I watch clips of interviews and costume fittings they always call the girls "fa dans" and the guys "siu sangs" so that's where I get my definitions from. But hey, you can call them whatever you want.

For several reasons:

1) Felix played GJ in the classic LOCH82.

2) He has that GJ feel to him. This might just be because we think he IS GJ.

3) He's a veteran actor and his acting is > Joe's.

4) His age matches GJ a bit better.

I'm not saying Joe would make a bad GJ. I'm just stating my preference.

1) Felix played GJ in the classic LOCH82.
Valid reason for nostalgia purposes. But, I personally was not that impressed by his potrayal of Guo Jing.

Since I was not that impressed by his potrayal of Guo Jing in LOCH, he's not Guo Jing to me.

Agree. But, Joe's acting is not bad either and I can imagine Joe with the honest dumb look. Plus Joe is taller and better built than Felix.

For the majority of ROCH, Guo Jing is only in his late 30s (or early 40's). Joe's age is closer to GJ's. Only after the 16 year period, Felix's age is closer.

Overall, I chose Joe because he's tall and look well built. His age is close to GJ's age. His acting is adequate.

If your choice for YG is Raymond Lam, shouldn't Felix represent a better Uncle figure? I guess we can factor in the makeup but in general Joe Ma and Raymond Lam looks around the same age to me. I know Joe Ma is around 5-10 years older than Raymond but Felix is more suitable as far as age is concern.

The term of "Siu Sang" and "Fadan" came from chinese opera, in which they meant young male lead and young female lead respectively. In western equivalent, they would be like the baritone and soprano. Therefore, Siu Sang and Fa Dan were general terms used to describe all the leading actor/actress in TVB. Sometimes, the more established actor/actress are called as Ah Gor (big brother) and Ah Jie (big sister).

So it isn't 100% correct to say that fadan meant an actress who is being promoted by TVB, but 'support' from company is necessary to become a fadan. Fadan and siusang is just a general term.

If you read chinese entertainment articles, you'll notice that "一线" (first line), "二线" (second line) tends to pop up randomly. This refer to the ranks of the fadans, the first line are the ones that held leading role in series. Second line themselves are also leads in some series, but in the presence of first line fadans they are often relegated to supporting roles. Needless to say, third line is the lowest and sometimes used by tabloids to insult certain actress/actor as 'yi ta luk' or small potatoes.

From the list above, Gigi and Sonija belongs to the first line.

In TVB, the competition to climb up into the 1st line is very fierce. Though we never see them all, TVB is 美女如云, there's many types of attractive female artistes to choose from. One mistake and you can find yourself being demoted down to rank 2 or 3.

It use to be not much competition on the siusang side (since TVB suffered a shortage of siusang 4-5 years back), but in the recent years TVB have been very active in recruiting new male leads and also held Mr HK contest in their bid to add fresh male blood.
