Does Xiao Yuanshan count? He knew the language of the Khitans.

Yangzhou is NOT Cantonese. Yangzhou people have their own dialect. Yangzhou is on the middle on the eastern coast. Canton (Guangzhou) is on the southernmost coast.

I doubt Wai Siu Bo spoke any English (even Russian is dubious, since he didn't really hang out with Princess Sophia for very long). I don't know if there had been any direct contact between China and England by the early Qing Dynasty. They'd been trading through Middle Eastern middlemen for centuries, but I'm not sure any Englishman had set foot on Chinese soil yet, or any Chinese on English soil.

Wei Xiaobao knew enough Russian to tell some soldiers what to do and to get Princess Sofia in bed.

Yideng could speak and read Sanskrit pretty well.

WXB spent a whole year in Russia, setting up the empire for Sophia to rule as a de-facto ruler.

technically, the condor series characters would have spoken "middle chinese" of the tang/song, not mandarin. i'm not a linguistics expert, but this is what i've gathered from chinahistoryforum. mandarin didn't really come into existence until late ming/qing dynasties.

Truth. I was about to make that point.

And re Western languages: it's more likely that WXB would know Italian than English, since most interactions at that time between Qing China and the West was via the Jesuit missionaries (think Matteo Ricci). Only later do you have people like Lord McCartney (1700s), who was turned away rather rudely/stupidly, and the occasional American/English Protestant missionaries during the 1800s. But in this time period, it's going to be mostly Jesuits, and due to trade, possibly some Dutch and (less likely) maybe some Russians.

I think Wang Yuyan once commented that the Xianbei language was dead. Also, all of the Shaolin abbots knew Sanskrit.

How do you know that these people speak Mandarin and not Cantonese? Jin Yong never specified. I think we should just call it Chinese with varying accents.

History. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mandari...stics)#History It would be like saying Julius Caeser spoke Italian.

It's unlikely characters who didn't live in Canton would speak Cantonese.
