    Default HE ZHUO YAN!

The videos above feature the incomparable He Zhuo Yan in her role as Lady Earth Flow in Journey to the West (2012).

Watch the beginning of the second video and scroll to the end of the first video.

Wow! She really DESTROYS everyone else that has ever played this character (and one of my favorites from the novel, no less).

Zhang Ji Zhong seriously needs to cast his star pupil in EVERY one of his productions ... oh wait, he ALREADY HAS!

He Zhuo Yan has appeared in practically all of Zhang Ji Zhong's TV series since Royal Tramp (2008).

Keep her in 'em, old man.

In Journey to the West (2012), He Zhou Yan has just REDEFINED the character of Lady Earth Flow and has exceeded all of my expectations. How is she not a star yet? Oh wait, she IS.

Way way way too much make up. All I can see are their eyes and body movements. The sound effects and their lines help to portray their emotions and what not you, but really? Is that even considered acting? It's like all the cast went to a plastic surgeon and got a dozen shots of Botox before they were set free on set. And graphics is pretty and all, but it takes away a lot of the realism when over done. I didn't like journey to the west when I was young because I was awestruck by the outlandish explosions or costumes or pretty graphics, but i was moved by the loyalty all three had towards their master, especially monkey king. I was moved by their strong bond and their growth through out the series as individuals and a whole. And moved by all the other demons who all have their own background story filled with hurt, anguish or etc that may have driven them to such motives. And most of all, I felt myself believing I was on that journey with them. Something that pretty graphics and costumes cannot do. Now don't get me wrong. It does help to have pretty costumes and graphics, but when all a drama has is these factors, it becomes rather disappointing. Like my fair princess which was a disastrous attempt to recreate the beloved princess pearl of my youth. Instead of focusing on emotions and the relationship between the characters, so much focused was on the pretty graphics and scenery and costumes that while I acknowledge these concepts, I didn't feel my heart moved for a second. " people will forget a lot of things, but they will always remember how you made them feel." in a few weeks I will forget the pretty graphics of my fair princess but I will always remember the emotion princess pearl made me feel. And this is how I feel about the latest journey to the west. Bleh.

I finally posted my FULL review of the entire series:

    http://kibescorporation.blogspot.com...te-series.html
    FULL REVIEW

    Certain highlights:
    • Ground-breaking visual effects, setting a new standard for Chinese fantasy TV series ... production values are through the ****ING ROOF
    • Superb video editing skills, the likes of which never seen before in Chinese television
    • Highly enjoyable soundtrack and music, as well as superb sound editing/mixing
    • Beautifully-designed costumes and sets (and imaginative to boot)
    • Incredibly well-choreographed action and martial arts sequences
    • Insanely well-developed, quirky characters with plenty of diverse, multi-dimensional personalities (the portrayals of the core four have NEVER been more entertaining)
    • Characters emote in a variety of intelligent and believable ways (subtle as well) / progressive character development
    • Stupendous, smart dialogue ... witty down to every subtle line / incredible on-screen chemistry during character exchanges and interactions
    • Believable, realistic, and relatable moments of pure drama and emotion
    • Chock full of philosophical wisdom, from both Taoist and Buddhist sources ... accurately adapts the philosophical meaning of the novel and the lessons of wisdom derived from each story in the novel
    • Undoubtedly the strongest screenplay/story adaptation of the novel to date
    • Faithfully adapts a Chinese mythology epic and classic and even improves upon it in every way
    • Truly lives up to the label of epic, large-scale, Chinese mythology fantasy drama TV series

Unbelievable cast. Wu Yue, Nie Yuan, Xu Jin Jiang (Elvis Tsui), Zang Jin Sheng, William Feng Shao Feng, Shu Chang, Liu Tao, Ady An Yi Xuan, Jessey Meng Guang Mei, Yan Dan Chen, Wei Zi, You Yong, Hu Ke, TAE, Chen Zhi Hui, Li Tai, and He Zhuo Yan DESTROYED!

I'm glad someone bumped this thread back to the front page, because I JUST realized something.

Zhang Meng is in this series!!!???

What the hell? How in the hell did I miss that the entire first time through?

    Wow!

All this time, she played the dragon princess of Infinite Longevity Lake (basically she played the Nine-Headed Hydra's fiance/wife).

If it weren't for all the demonic make-up ... beauty like Zhang Meng's would be hard to miss.

But the role was pretty minor ... that's how I overlooked her.

Li Tai plays the Nine-Headed Hydra Prince. Interesting pairing there.

Really? You sure you don't know who Zhang Meng is? If you've ever seen any of the following dramas, then you know who she is (because she's starred in all of them):

倚天屠龙记 The Heaven Sword and Dragon Saber (2009)
    大丫鬟 Pretty Maid (2010)
美人心计 Schemes of a Beauty (2010)
    唐宫美人天下 Beauty World (2011)
西游记 Journey to the West (2012)
    牵牛的夏天 My Sassy Girl (2012)
天涯明月刀 Horizon, Bright Moon, Saber (2012)
胜女的代价 The Queen of SOP (2012)

Zhang Meng = beauty, personality, talent (the whole package)

    The ULTIMATE Girl Next Door

Another reason why I LOVE Yu Zheng's TV productions. He loves to cast Zhang Meng and Sun Fei Fei in his dramas ...

... two talented women who give NEW MEANING to the word BEAUTY.

Of course, this was a Zhang Ji Zhong production.

Would love to see He Zhuo Yan, Sun Fei Fei, and Zhang Meng together in ONE series ... I'm pretty sure only Zhang Ji Zhong could make that happen, as he's the ONLY one who's worked with ALL three women.

In fact, I just decided to make a blog post about this:

    http://kibescorporation.blogspot.com...-zhuo-yan.html

    Zhang Meng's beauty = MYTHICAL??

OMFG, that was the most insane video I've ever watched in my life.

It took me two hours to watch this ONE HOUR video because I kept stopping it in disbelief.

It starts with an old white guy talking about Zhou Xun, Crystal Liu, Huang Xiaoming, and Hu Jun ...

... then it goes to some insane philosophical (and political) rant by Zhang Jizhong involving "life and death," a bunch of implied anti-Communist ideology, and other crazy shit.

Then some douche bag German guy starts badmouthing Three Kingdoms (2010) (I wanna slap him), and Zhang Jizhong starts being a prick about it too. Spouting off a bunch of crap about CGI and visual effects ... the same exact stuff that people have been saying about HIS Journey to the West and why they hate it.

    The irony is simply unreal.

Then at some point it turns into Zhang Jizhong talking about Chinese philsophies with Taoism vs. Buddhism vs. Confucianism.

And finally he starts insulting Americans and Hollywood and saying shit about how American cinema is "crap?" (really?! seriously?!)

    What the flaming hell ...

I posted all the comments I made in a blog entry:

I apologize if this has been covered already. I didn't read through all 28 pages of this thread. I just started watching JTW 2011. I read that the opening theme song is supposed to be the Heart Sutra. However, I listened to chanted versions of the Heart Sutra and looked at the sanskrit transliteration, and they appear to be different than the theme song. Could someone please help me understand the reason for the discrepancy?
