    Default Trouble with women

Most Jin Yong protagonists suffered difficulties with women. Let's have a quick recap:

Duan Yu - some random girl forced him to marry her, then turned out to be his half-sister; later, all the girls he liked turned out to be this way... or so he thought.

Xiao Feng - loved Ah Zhu, but loved by Ah Zi, whom he didn't like that way

Guo Jing - loved Huang Rong, but wanted by somebody else

Yang Guo - do I even need to say anything?

Zhang Wuji - I don't think I need to say anything

Linghu Chong - lost the girl he liked, got depressed

Shi Potian - got involved with a biatch early on via a mix up

Yuan Chengzhi - liked by a cross-dresser, as well as a childhood playmate

    Wei Xiaobao - yada yada...

    Chen Jialuo - OMG...

Di Yun - loved someone that was married to his enemy

Hu Fei - had quite a few admirers

    ...yada yada...

    ----------------------------------------------------------------------

So, who is missing from this list?
    Please find the missing person.
That person, who is a major protagonist, is the one that I believe that avoided the most problems with women, and his romance came out very smoothly.

Yes, I believe Xuzhu is a special case in Jin Yong protagonism. He didn't have any trouble with his lover. Which is also why his romance is probably the dullest in the entire Jin Yong universe which no one really gives a sh*t about.

And which romance is the most popular with readers? I think it would have to be Yang Guo and XIao Longnu. And guess what, they had the most turmoil.

    So, smooth = boring
    while
    turmoil = good characterization

I think the popularity of YG and XLN has more to do with their good looks. People project themselves onto those characters.

I think it's good looks + strong devotion = the romantic ideal

It turns off as many people as it turns on. It depends on the mindset of the observer. These characters were always going to be controversial.

What I don't get is how so many guys claim that they love ROCH because YG reminds them of themselves. In my mind, I'm thinking "Go look in the mirror, dude".

    such a funny statement.
i've never heard/seen people proclaiming that YG reminds them of themselves. how many gorgeous one arm hunks with incredible martial arts + undying devotion to 1 woman are there floating around?

Yang Guo is more than just a filthy gorgeous faithful lover.
A lot of young people identify with his lack of sense of belonging when he was young.

It was hard to sympathize with him sometimes, however, because his failure to belong was sometimes his own fault.

One of the first things about belonging is...well, wanting to belong. If a person constantly goes around with an air of superiority, he/she is going to find himself/herself isolated before long.

Ken, you're too harsh on Yang Guo.

He was borne without a father.

His mother died when he was still young.

He meets Guo Jing and Huang Rong.

Luckily for him, they bring him back to Peach Blossom Island.

Unluckily for him, they don't teach him martial arts.

Guo Jing brings him to Quanzhen.

Quanzhen doesn't teach him martial arts either.

At this time, Xiao Long Nu (or rather Granny Sun) takes him in.

He feels "love" for the first time in his life.

We could really say that XLN is the MOST important person at that time. Why do you guys consider him such a "bad" protagonist? Is it because of his lack of chivalry? He's a human and as we all know, humans don't go around helping others for free.

Please learn to sympathize with Yang Guo.

Lots of people have it rough in life.

It doesn't give them carte blanche to act like a d*ck.

If they do, they have to face the consequences. That's the world: you reap what you sow.

Did Yang Guo really act a d*ck?

Sure he acted really cool and perhaps snotty towards Guo Fu, but I think she deserved it. She's too spoiled and feels that the world revolves around her.

Haha. Another thread turning into pro-YG vs anti-YG. Anti-YG group can't help hijacking every thread that mentioned YG and then pro-YG group will come to defend and it's anti-YG vs pro-YG debate all over again.

Yes, all too often. Had he been a little more humble, like Gwok Jing or Cheung Mo Gei, he could have saved himself ALOT of trouble.

Yang Guo was only a d*ck to people who mistreated him or were dicks in turn.

Why does it seem like tonight's posting activity rate seems to have increased greatly.
I go away for one minute and come back to find a lot more posts...

Anyhow, Yang Guo is not as bad as Ken says he is.

Dude: if I constantly copped the kind of attitude that Yeung Gor did when I was thirteen years old, my dad would have *so* beaten my a*s.

So...no, I don't have a whole lot of sympathy for him. He was Emo before Emo was even invented.

It's Ken and Yang Guo again.

Hey take WXB off your list, PJ. He was a serious pimp. No trouble with women at all.

Guo Jing's "trouble" isn't a real one. Take him off too.
