    Default Ashes of Time

Watching Ashes of Time right now. Its actually very interesting visualization of Jin Yong's characters, especially the Greats as 20 yr. olds.

There are several characters I completely don't understand. I'm hoping SPC forum elders can help:

    1) Who is Blind Swordsman (Tony Leung Chiu Wei) in the JY universe?

    2) Ummm...Bridgette Lin as DGQB?? and schizophrenic member of Murong clan?? I can only guess that she's MRF daughter?

    3) Peach Blossom (Carina Lau) and the horse?

This movie is not meant to make sense. Please do not take it literally while watching it. Gosh, it's a comedy.

Haven't seen it, but from what I understand, all Wong Kar Wai did was borrow the names, and nothign else.

    To Ken Cheng and QF,

I agree with both of you...this movie is simply stupid! I hate Chinese comedies that don't have Stephen Chow in it, hehe! But we shouldn't complain because this was not meant to be serious in the first place.

I believe if you read the 2 SPCNET reviews about the movie first, it should be of some help to you.

OT: To Suet Seung: Your signature is freakin awesome. I love those little clips on SOD 96'

Definetly the best Xiao Au Jiang Hu up to date. This version, trumps all of the versions, including the china one.

Bogeyman - I think you are thinking about Eagle Shooting Heroes (the comedy) - I hated that too. Ashes of Time is definitely not a comedy.

Suet Seung - thanks for the links. I actually did read all the reviews and search by the discussion boards but no answer to my questions.

Dewyloony123 - here's a link to the video if you want (it has English subs)
    http://www.crunchyroll.com/media-230...ie-Part-1.html

Ken - this is actually my second time watching (I watched it years ago when it first came out on video in 1994). I really hated it too but then I read the reviews about how repeated viewings made it better. So I gave it another try - its really good if you like Wong Kar Wai style films.

This interpretation will never get anyone the answers to the endless VS questions about the Greats, but very interesting in interpreting the emotions.

I just couldn't figure out who the Blind Swordsmen in JY's universe is?

    Hi smurf,

If we think of the characters in Ashes as the Greats in their 30s, and the Sunset Swordsman (Tony Leung Chiu-Wai) died at that time, then he may just be a new (non-novel) character introduced by the film, and his death makes it convenient to explain why he wasn't mentioned in LOCH.

As for Brigitte Lin, I think perhaps Wong Kar-wai tried to envision why a person named Dugu Qiubai would be seeking a loss so desperately. His vision was this ambiguous dual-personality character played by Brigitte Lin.

Thanks. But I really dislike Wong Kar Wai--that's why I've been avoiding the movie It'll take too long to discuss, but anyway, he's one of those polarizing figures you either adore or deplore.

EDIT: But THIS was kind of fun... http://www.lovehkfilm.com/reviews/ea...ing_heroes.htm

PJ - thanks! I thought I completely missed a character from LOCH (or some other from another story). It was really bugging me.

Dewyloony123 - I understand - it took me 4 viewings of Days of Being Wild to turn me into WKW fan.

The story made no sense but I thought the Murong DQKB bit was witty and definitely made me think about an old thread debating the identity of DQKB.

If he had not used the damn 'shaking-jumping shot' cam for every damn fight, I'd have put this movie into one of the all-time wuxia classics.

But the damn 'jumping-cam' screwed the movie over.

There a comedy version of it where Leung Chiu Wai is Ouyeng Feng.

You absolutely have to read FaQ's review of this movie - its fantastic.
