    Default Book Recommendations

I want to find something new to read. Please recommend me something. My favorite authors are Jane Austen, Alexander Dumas, and Victor Hugo. I've also read a lot of Shakespeare and alot of Anne Rice. Some of my favorite books include Anna Karenina, The Great Gatsby, In Cold Blood, and Gone With the Wind. So, as you can tell, I like "old" books and romancy type books; and i also have a thing for violence.

I don't know if it suits you, but Gates of Fire by Stephen Pressfield.

An entertaining and immersive adaption of the battle of Thermopylae and a look into Spartan culture.

It's mandatory reading for them. It does get your blood pumped up and thirsty for some blood though. But nothing like 300. It makes both sides look good, the Persians and the Greeks.

Aw, I adore Jane Eyre. Have you read any Diana Gabaldon? She's not "old," but she writes time travel romance [WWII to 1745 Jacobite, Scotland to Pre-Revolutionary America]. Very historically detailed author with wonderful fleshed out leads.

I read an abridged version of Jane Eyre at 9 or 10, and found it thoroughly creepy.

i enjoy the same authors as you. however, i'm currently reading middlesex and am really enjoying this interesting, twisted tale about incestuous ancestors which lead to the protagonist's current sexual identity. very interesting!

"classics", hmmm? well, here's an eclectic mix of good stories -- i'm a bit of a mish-mash reader (and apologies in advance if you've read all of these):

MT Anderson. The Astonishing Life of Octavian Nothing -- I & II.

Harper Lee. To Kill a Mockingbird.

    Ray Bradbury. Farenheit 451.

    Christopher Moore. Fool.

Muriel Barbery. The Elegance of the Hedgehog.

    Sharon Shinn. Heart of Gold.

Kim Stanley Robinson. The Crisis in the Capital trilogy (Forty Signs of Rain, etc.).

    Neil Gaiman. Coraline.

    Elizabeth Gaskell. Cranford.

Garth Nix. The Abhorsen Trilogy (Sabriel, etc.).

    Patricia McKillip. Od Magic.

Terry Pratchett. The Wee Free Men trilogy (A Hat Full of Sky, etc.).

P.G. Wodehouse. The Code of the Woosters.

Ursula Le Guin. The Lathe of Heaven.

can't remember the titles offhand, but a few of the stories by Patricia McKillip fall into that type of category, even if it's not exactly medieval era.

Ivanhoe, Knights of Round Table (??), RobinHood and Scarlett Pimpernel and
1001 Arabian nights might fit into the category. Personally I like pulp fictions like Doc Savage & The Shadows

Neil Gaiman is my 2nd favouritest author in the world, and some of his works are pure magic!!

If you never liked his novels, i would suggest try reading Sandman- a collection of graphic novels that propels him to stardom.

uh, no thank you. i've seen the movie coraline, read some of his short stories that a friend forced me to, and also heard her rave about him for years. you're not going to change my mind, just like how my mother has been unable to change my mind about eating green beans.

i don't like all his stories, but a few are intriguing enough. i was surprised that i liked coraline. i haven't seen the movie, but the trailer alone told me they took liberties with the storyline.

anyway, hope you do like some of the stories! happy reading!

Not going to force you at all.

The graphic novels series "Sandman" were a collection of earlier works where Neil was more vibrant, darker at times, and very original at others.

Wiki on one of the volume: esp. the Midsummer interpretation.

    good books
    Hmmm, interesting,
    Here is some book recommendations:
If you are used to reading densely packed novels by writers like Victor Hugo and Alexandre Dumas you might not be satisfied with a lot of modern writings. As for Dumas, aside from "Count of Monte Cristo", "Fourty-five Guardsmen", "Queen's Necklace" etc., Dumas also wrote more sequels to his Musketeers adventures so that will top my list.

    Here is my list:

Twenty Years After - Alexandre Dumas (where the musketeers try to rescue king Charles I of England)
The Viscount of Bragelonne - Alexandre Dumas (a musketeers adventure)
Archangel - Sharon Shinn (Samaria "angel" series)
Jovah's Angel - Sharon Shinn (Samaria "angel" series
Alleluia Files - Sharon Shinn (Samaria "angel" series)
Assassin's Touch - Laura Joh Rowland (Sano Ichiro martial arts mystery)
The Snow Empress - Laura Joh Rowland (Sano Ichiro martial arts mystery)

These are the books I have enjoyed reading the most in the last year. Of course the Dumas novels are more denser. If you want to read the whole series of the musketeer adventures, the first two books part of that. Nothing beats a good story.
