Many older generation of HK singers can sing English well. This was because during the 60's and 70's, the popular songs were the Mandarin and English. Cantonese songs mostly consisted of those funny songs like 'Brother 11', 'Handsome Guy' etc. It was Joseph Ku (and some composers of his generation) who revolutionised Cantopop with those wonderful TVB themesongs.

Frances Yip (singer of THE BUND theme song) was really great covering pop/rock tunes during the 1960s and early 1970s before she turned Cantopop later in the 1970s. Her version of Elvis Presley's "Can't Help Falling In Love," (which she turned into an uptempo country and western style song) which she recorded during the late 1960s, was one of the two best cover versions of this song (along with UB40's reggae version from 1993).

My parents had an all-English language pop covers Frances Yip album from the late 1960s that's long out of print. This album included aforementioned recording of "Can't Help Falling In Love," as well as Frances' covers of the Beatles' "Let It Be," Dana's "All Kinds of Everything," and Dionne Warwick's "I'll Never Fall In Love Again." It was great.

I must rummage through my parents' garage to see if I can find this album again. Unfortunately, I'd also have to locate a working turntable to play it on.

Frances Yip's voice is so cool in her early days! Here is a priceless clip of All I Ever Need is You with Sam Hui:
