This is a good series. I saw part of it in 1995 when it was first broadcast in TV, then I finally bought and finished watching it earlier this year. Liu Xiao Qing is the perfect Wu Ze Tian.

I agree, Ru Ping (the actress who played Shangguan Wan Er) is attractive. She has a really sweet and peaceful screen presence. I always pitied Empress Wang; she was no match for Wu Ze Tian. Her final scene was especially tragic.

I got to the part where Shang guan yuer was at the female monks after the king died. She tried her best to convinced the currently king the son to able to get her out. I felt for her because she suffered so much and someone she was with at the monks living quarters commit suicide.

the actresses look really beautiful. i saw wu ze tian when i was a kid. but i dunno whether its this version, cause its like a mainland version, showing wu ze tian's life frm young to old. i remember my dad loved the actress portraying wu ze tian, i was actually too young that time to understand the series properly though.

    Cool

I just thought it was funny because all the good looking ladies appeared in the beginning when Empress Wu was paving her path to Empress, but after she became Empress, all the females that came later were played by quite plain actresses (except for the ones that played Shang Guan Wan Er and the Wei Guo Fu Ren). I was so disappointed that Empress Wei looks so old and haggard and Princess Tai Ping looks very strange and stiff and old.

I had always like the Empress Wang, I thought she was very beautiful and had a beautiful personality though naive, but too bad the Emperor doesn't like virtuous women. I'm not that raved about Lady Xiao, but she does look great when she first came out as the dancer in green. but she did a great job in being haughty.

Consort Xu is quite nice looking too. I like her role. I think she really opened up Empress Wu's views of life in the palace. I don't like the maid Ling Er- too bimbo-ish.

Empress's Wu sis is not good looking at all, quite old and plain, and she has zero personality. Don't know why the Emperor's so attracted to her. I just feel so bad for the Empress when she finds them having an affair. So happy when she died.

Her daughter looks much better but don't like her annoying attitude when she seduces the Emperor. Her plan would have worked if she just kept her mouth shut about how young and beautiful she was. She reminds me of a bimbo. I was actually quite diappointed Empress Wu didn't go and kill her off, instead of accidentally, because she was very annoying (her mum wasn't that great either).

I still thing Liu Xiao Qing looks the best, and I can't believe she actually pulled off being a fifteen year old.

I like Ru Ping a lot in here. But can't believe her Shang Guan Wan Er woudl fall for such a feminine and useless guy.

This movie was loaded with GORGEOUS CHINESE WOMEN (based on faces alone). Women after women were so beautiful (the only series I could think of with a heavy load of beautiful chinese actresses was China's JOurney to the West. Man, you gotta' admit a lot of those "Yao-Jing" or "She-Devil" and "Heavenly Beings" were beautiful.

According to history, empress Wang was a very jealous woman and often used people to get what she wanted. If it wasn't for these traits of her, Wu ZeTian would never got the chance to step back into the palace during the times she was spending at the Monastery as a nun. Wu-ZeTian knew this about Wang and therefore had to take the pre-emptive strike before she became another of Wang's victim.

According to history, Wu ZeTian's sister is quite a beauty herself. Remember that the reason why the Emperor turned to Wu's sister was because WU was pregnant at the time, if I remember correctly, and therefore the King was more vulnerable to anything beautiful before his eyes.

I totally agree. Liu Xiao Qing was in her late forties or early fifties when she played Wu Ze-Tian....she looked so cute playing the 14 yo wu zetian. I love the beginning scene where she was staring naively at consort Xu as Xu was being carried down the hall to the emperor. The wind brushing Wu's bangs to the side while her eyes were full of curiosity and brightness....that was just CLASSIC.

Shang Guan Wan Er was beautiful too. Ru-Ping played her well. Not sure if anyone else noticed this, but Ru-Ping was also in Qiong Yao's QSSYMM playing Vicki Zhao's best friend, Fang Yi.

ANYWAY, I read a couple of months ago that China was planning to remake another WU-ZETIAN. What ever happened to that plan?

Liu Xiao Qing was about 43 when she played Wu Ze Tian, but she was definitely able to pull off the role during all time frames well. The makeup used to make her look 80+ was really something at the time.

This is a good series. Chen Bao Guo really acted well as the incompetent emperor. I think Princess Tai Ping looks pretty good. I saw her as Princess Wen Cheng in another version of Princess Wen Cheng (not Cao Ying's version).
