    Default my scary dream

i had a freaky and vivid dream this morning, and while bored at work, i decided to make it into a short story. i changed some things to have them make more sense. i hope you guys like.

    ---------------------------------------------

Jane had been in England for eight days, and was having the time of her life. She had gone shopping at Harrods and seen all the touristy sites. Every evening, she ate fish and chips and had a pint. Jane couldn’t wait to go home and show her parents and friends all the pictures she had taken.

Today, Jane decided to just go wandering about. She had already done everything on her list, and the woman at the front desk of the hotel had told her that there were a lot of quaint small streets a little to the West of the city center.

This morning, Jane had walked around a quaint tea cup shop and an antiques shop. After browsing the curios, she stopped in at a Swedish pastry shop, of all things, and bought a chocolate dessert the clerk had called a vacuum cleaner.

After walking around for another hour, she looked around and realized that she had completely lost her way. All the old gray stone houses looked the same, and, moreover, they looked uninhabited. She tried to trace her steps back to an alley where she had taken a wrong left, and came across a wrought iron gate. The gate was about twelve feet high and looked old and black. Jane lightly touched the metal bars and the door opened a few inches with a loud creak. “Well, this is interesting,” thought Jane. “I wonder what this was for. Probably to keep pets or something inside.”

Jane stepped inside and saw that about fifty feet in front of her was another iron gate, and about fifty feet in front of that was another. It was like two large cages. To her immediate left and right were tall gray stone buildings. Each had a large arch in its side. It looked almost as though there was a large opening dug into the side of each building that had been walled up. After the buildings, there was another alleyway that ran through this first cage, but there were similar metal gates at the cross section. Beyond the cross street were another two gray stone buildings with arches, similar to the ones before.

The gate separating the cages was wide open. Curiously, there was an open padlock hanging on the door of this gate, so one could lock it if inside the first cage. Even more curious, there was a red mini-cooper parked along the side of one of the buildings. It seemed very out of place in this surreal setting. This second cage was exactly like the first. Jane was about to walk forward and see if this all led to another cage, when she heard someone yell, “Hey!”

She looked around, and she saw a young man walking up one of the side alleyways towards her. He opened the side gate and stepped into this second cage. “Do you know how to get out of here? I parked my car here and went to look for someone to give me directions.”

“Um…sorry. I’m a tourist and I just wandered here and got lost, too.”

“You sound American. I’m from Canada. My name is Tony.”

    “Jane. Nice to meet you.”

The two shook hands politely. “I came from this way. Maybe if we get out of these creepy cages, we’ll find someone. These buildings don’t even have windows.”

The pair walked back to the first gate and Jane pulled. It didn’t budge. “That’s strange. It locked behind me.”

“Bonjour!” Tony and Jane turned around and saw an older couple who looked just as lost as them. They said something else in French and Jane looked at Tony. “Aren’t all Canadians supposed to know French?”

“We’re required to take it in school, not to pass it or learn anything from it.” After a few minutes of broken French peppered with English, Tony and Jane learned that the couple were also tourists and had gotten lost as well.

They then tried each of the side doors and they were all locked. “Well, if we can’t go back, let’s try to go forward,” said Jane. As they walked towards the gate at the end of the second cage, the light started to change. It had been a semi-cloudy afternoon, but suddenly now, it looked gray. It wasn’t getting darker. In fact, it was decidedly brighter, but in an artificial looking way. As they got closer and closer to the gate, the change was more pronounced. After they passed the first set of buildings in the second cage Jane noticed a light coming from the buildings. The previously walled up archways were now open and looked like long tunnels. Inside, she could see faintly make out what looked like a rack, the medieval torture device she had seen during her Tower of London tour just days before. There were other large wooden devices, but she couldn’t see them clearly. As she squinted, she saw what looked like a human foot! Jane stumbled back and bumped right into Tony. But Tony took no notice of her. He was staring straight ahead beyond the last gate. Jane followed his gaze and what she saw was horrifying. It was a large open courtyard, bathed in the artificial gray light. Inside were horrible, pale people. Their clothes were tattered and dirty and some of them were chained. One man was bound to a table and all were disfigured in some way. Many of them looked like they were screaming, but Jane heard no noise.

“Stop! Where the F—k are you going!?” yelled Tony. The older French couple were opening the gate and stepping inside the courtyard. They took no notice of Tony’s frantic screams and continued walking towards the strange people, who had started walking to meet them. They didn’t seem to be seeing what Jane and Tony were seeing.

“Oh my God! What the F—k is that?!” Tony had fallen to the side of building and was crying and shaking hysterically. “Next to you!” He pointed at a spot right beside Jane’s head. Jane turned around slowly and saw a white, slightly glowing face just inches from hers. She repressed a scream and closed her eyes.

She repeated silently to herself “Our Father in Heaven, hallowed be thy name. Please Lord, protect me from this evil and give me safe passage from this place. And please help Tony as well. Please, please, please…”

Jane opened her eyes and the face was gone. Tony was still in hysterics on the floor, but the creatures had started coming into the second cage. She grabbed Tony and started running towards the first cage. Jane stopped suddenly because now about a third of the first cage was filled with creatures similar to the courtyards ones. But these were dressed in what looked like tattered Victorian era clothes. They emitted the same strange glow, but were not partially bound like the others. Jane thought they looked afraid of the courtyard creatures. They were all against the first gate, as far away from the courtyard as possible.

“Come here! It’ll be better for you than if they get you! They’ll do much worse to you.” Jane didn’t know where to go. All Tony could do was cry and mutter, “Oh God! Oh God! F—k! ”

“Hello love, could you hold this for me?” Jane looked to her left and saw a man dressed in Victorian era clothes holding two shot glasses. He had the same eerie glow, but had a friendly smile on his face. Too surprised to think clearly, she held the first shot glass while the man downed the contents of the other.

“Oh, you’re sweet. Here, I’ll treat you to a drink.”

“Oh, no than…” before Jane had a chance to politely decline, the man had poured the contents of the second glass on her hand. “Um…thank you. Tasty!”

“Haha. You’re in quite a predicament here. You better make your choice soon. The prisoners are gonna get you guys.”

Jane looked behind her and the courtyard creatures were only a few feet away from her.

“If I were you, I’d go towards the cannibals. They’ll just eat you, but the prisoners will do much worse. Oh, things I would never describe to a lady!”

Jane muttered a quick thank you to the shot glasses man and pulled Tony into the first cage. She quickly slammed the gate shut and locked it behind her.

“You made the right choice. It’ll be quick,” the cannibals said. They started moving towards the unlucky pair.

“Wait, hold up now! You can’t enjoy a good meal without something to wash it down! Don’t you want a bit of drink to go along with them?” the shot glasses man yelled out.

“The alcoholic is right. We have to go and get the wine!” With that, the cage slowly emptied out as all the cannibals went into one of the tunnels.

“Now! You two have to follow me! And if you value your lives, touch nothing.” Jane eagerly nodded and even Tony managed to simper his assent. The alcoholic led them into one of the tunnels with the torture devices. Jane tried her best to just look ahead at the alcoholic, and Tony was following her, with one hand clutching the back of her shirt. It was then that Jane noticed that the alcoholic didn’t seem to walking, but rather, floating. She tried to concentrate on his back, but couldn’t help looking sideways a few times. What she saw made her quickly look away. Again, there were the strange people chained up and screaming, but again she heard no noise besides their own footsteps and Tony’s muffled crying.

Pretty soon, they were all out of the tunnel and back into a deserted alleyway. The light was no longer that strange bright gray, but was normal sunshine. “Now, if you keep walking straight, you’ll be back to your normal lives in no time.”

“Oh thank you so much!” Jane was so happy she almost wanted to hug the alcoholic.

“All I ask is that you two put some flowers on my grave. My name is Stephen James Preston, 1844 to 1891, buried at the Rector Street cemetery, west side. Can you two do that for me?”

Jane smiled. “What kind of flowers do you like best?”

Stephen smiled, too. “Bless you love. Carnations. Goodbye. And remember the flowers!” With that, he was gone.

After walking a few more blocks, Jane and Tony were back to a busy street. There were cars and pedestrians everywhere, and a pub across the way. Tony started waving frantically for a taxi. “Where are you going?” Jane asked.

“I’m getting the F—k out of here! I’m going to the airport to catch the first plane to Toronto! I’m getting away from all this crazy F—king S—t!”

“You can’t! We have to go put flowers on Stephen’s grave!”

    “F—k you! I’m not putting any F—king flowers on some F—king ghost’s F—king grave! F—k that!”

    “But you have to!”

“I don’t have to do S—t! Don’t tell me what the F—k to do! As far as I’m concerned, this S—t never happened! It must have been a F—king bad acid trip!” With that, Tony got into a taxi and sped off.

Jane watched as Tony drove off, and then asked a local for directions to the cemetery. On her way, she stopped by a florist and a liquor store. The cemetery groundskeeper thought it was strange that she was visiting a grave from 120 years ago, but Jane told him that he was her ancestor. She soon found herself in front of Stephen’s grave. Jane placed the flowers and a bottle of wine in front of the headstone, said a few words of thanks, and left. Like Tony, she didn’t want to stay much longer in the country.

At the airport, waiting to board the plane, Jane thought about what had occurred that day. Was it all a dream? Or a bad acid trip, as Tony had said? She didn’t know, but she knew she wasn’t going to come back to England anytime soon.

Her musings were interrupted when she caught part of the conversation of the people behind her.

“Oh my God! In terminal D-2? Where did they find him?”

“He was dead in the bathroom. Apparently, there was blood everywhere, all over the toilet and the stall walls and even some on the ceiling. It must have been so gruesome and scary for the guy who found him!”

“Well how did he die? Was he shot?”

“No, they said it looked like his guts just exploded out of him. And his face! Oh my God, they told me that his eyes were completely bugged out and he was this weird grayish tinge! Kind of like that girl who got killed in The Ring, but not all slimy.”

“Who was he? Some kind of gangster or some guy in the mafia?”

“I don’t know. They said it was just some kid from Canada.”

    ---------------------------

I realize my descriptions might be confusing. let me know if you need a drawing of the two cages.
