Default OT: When you guys do polls at the Wuxia Forum...

I've noticed that when you guys do polls at the Wuxia Forum these days, you usually choose to make them public. I have no problem with that, but I notice this choice has been taken much more often recently than it used to be.

Are you all really that curious about who votes for what, or, at the risk of sounding egotistical, is it because you guys KNOW that I don't vote in public polls, and so you use the public polls to discourage me from voting for one reason or another?

You can be honest: I just want to know.

I didn't know that you ARPPed: Actively Resist Public Polls.

Many more public polls recently than before? But out of the 5 or so polls on the first page, only 1 is public

I very seldom post public polls (or polls of any kind, although I just made a private one for the outcome of the Lakers/Celtics Finals). One of them is probably mine.

As for the others, if they're not public, they were probably posted in 2007 or earlier. I've noted a definite increase in public polls during the past six months, because (due to my own personal disinclination towards voting in public polls) I've voted in fewer of the polls than I used to (when they were more commonly private).

Since last month, especially, when I publicly announced my resistance to public polls, there've been more of them. I began to wonder if the community was sending me a message...

Maybe the onset of paranoia is yet another side effect of my advancing age.

since not all poll voters bother to post in the thread, sometimes it's interesting to see what thinks what (as long as it's not private)

When I want to guarantee a chance to see what the participants think, I don't post a poll at all. No poll means they're FORCED to discuss the issue if they want to give an opinion on it.

    Polls can be discussion killers.

Um...not that I'm discouraging their use or anything...just saying.

some people want to voice their opinions but are too lazy to discuss and read the discussion
in which case, they'll either not post at all, or post a one line response and flee off. twenty pages later, who remembers what they said?

My poll-less threads are designed to weed out the lazy, or at least encourage the lazy, but not-so-lazy-that-they-don't-want-to-make-themselves-heard (yeah, that's a subject) to get off their duffs and start...uh, opining.

I guess I'm just a fascist that way.

But ironically, you did initiate yourself a public poll recently.

    That one was very deliberate.

It was specifically designed to...ah, well. That would be telling.

    Don't flatter yourself, Ken.

People are just curious to see who votes for which choice. Personally I think public poll is more interesting.

Public wuxia polls are fun, you absoulutely can't deny that!

Well, actually in a way, it's kind of interesting to see how people can have different answers to the polls when they are faced with a plethora of choices.

I don't want to get pigeonholed. I don't want people to say, "Oh, Ken voted exactly like I thought he would!" Conversely, I don't want people to say "Oh, Ken voted completely opposite to how I think he would!" I just don't like being predicted that way.

It's not that I'm unwilling to share my opinion, but if I do, I expect people to read my explanation all the way through. You only get my opinion if you read the entire explanation behind it. I dislike the idea that people can check out my opinion in a public vote without reading the explanation behind it.

Also, as I said in an earlier post, it also forces people to defend their opinions somewhat. With a public poll, we get to see who voted for what, but unless he/she writes an explanation, we'll never know WHY.

Does any of that make sense?

Seriously, you think way too darn much! Add "paranoia" to the list of Ken's characteristics.

It's not paranoia if they're all really out to get me.
