Default More possible Jin Yong goofs

In chapter 34, Jin Yong said the Xuanming Elders' lightness kung fu were not First Class. Even normal fighters at the Mongolian camp had better lightness kung fu.

And yet, in the same chapter, Jin Yong wrote (see bold part):

    “张公子救我,张公子救我!”张无忌呼呼两掌,使上了十成劲力,将
    玄冥二老逼得倒退三步,展开轻功,向王保保马后追来。玄冥二老和其余三名好手大惊,
    随后急追。张无忌每当五人追近,便反手向后拍出数掌,九阳神功威力奇大,每掌拍出,
    玄冥二老便须闪避,不敢直撄其锋。如此连阻三阻,张无忌追及奔马,纵身跃起,抓住王
    保保后颈。

How can they be nearing Zhang Wuji as they run, when Zhang Wuji's qinggong is much better? The distance should only get wider.

Also in chapter 9, Jin Yong described He Biweng's lightness kung fu as very good (极高), such that Yin Susu had no hope of nearing. Possible contradiction to the "not First Class, even lower than a couple of ordinary fighters" description later?

I think Jin Yong's memory is not First Class. Even normal writers from Mongolia had better memory.

Jin Yong's writing power is very deep but in terms of editorial proofchecking even mediocre authors are comparable.
    Reverend Rongku prepared himself.

Suddenly, he toss his hands and screamed: "I am not human! I am an animal!"

The crowd startled at such a bizarre beginning to the story.

We have to keep in mind how long these things get. Forty chapters is not easy to keep track of.

    Yes, not an easy task.

For example, if you asked me to remember every post that I ever wrote on SPCNET, well, it definitely won't happen. I read old posts of mine all the time that I had completely forgotten about after a few years.

Exactly. Speaking from the perspective of someone who writes fiction, it's difficult to remember what you wrote about a certain character or event after you've gone on to write something else. I try to re-read what I've written and clean up that kind of thing, but I still miss things.

The Xuanming Elders' Palms must have hit JY's brain hard and thus he forgot.

    That's what editors are for.

It's usually a bad idea for an author to be his/her own editor. I think Jin Yong did that during the composition of his wuxia stories (which he wrote on a daily deadline, as they were daily features of his MING PAO newspaper).

We fans would make fine editors for Jin Yong. I'll even do it for free.

Especially the few of us who are PINs: Perfectionists In Nitpicking.

If you were the editor, DGSD would probably be 50000 characters longer since every other character would have a long 'ELOC' title repeated everytime their names are mentioned.

Nowadays editors don't really edit anything - or at least, they don't proofread, which is really what's involved in identifying possible mistakes like the item PJ mentions. Proofreading is all done by Microsoft Word. (shakes head sadly)

Spellcheck will get some spelling and grammatical errors, but it does jack in catching continuity goofs and logical inconsistencies.

It sounds like we're being hard on poor old Jin Yong. He's not the only writer who's made continuity gaffes in writing, and when he wrote his wuxia stories, he probably didn't anticipate that people would be examining them very closely decades later.

Here is another thing about the Xuanming Elders that I don't remember. Jin Yong said:

When did Xuanming Elder clash palms with Zhang Sanfeng?

Wasn't it when one of them brought the ten-year old Cheung Mo Gei to Mt. Mo Dong...just moments after Cheung Chui San had committed suicide?

The novel described their encounter as simply Zhang Sanfeng placed his hand on the Xuanming Elder's shoulder and it was over for him. It was never said that the Xuanming Elder had the opportunity to clash palms with Zhang Sanfeng.
