Post What if someone gives you a free computer - desktop or laptop?

Let's say someone wants you to give you a free computer, maybe as a birthday present or as a reward for your good performance or hard work, etc.

You have a chance to choose for yourself - would you want to get a free Desktop PC or a free Laptop PC? (Assuming the general specs and brand of these two are the same..)

Laptop, because I don't have one and my desktop is pretty new with enough RAM and harddisk to make me happy. Just change my mobile phone recently, nothing fancy but I don't use all that 3.5G stuff anyway so doesn't matter.

You know... everybody probably has a different reason for choosing a certain option.

Yeah, just want to see which option is more "hot". People have different needs and requirements, there's no doubt about that.

Unfortunately, a desktop and a notebook with the same specs will differ greatly in prices. By all means I will personally go for the notebook if I have a super rich or generous friend.

This is exactly why I would go with the laptop - I would just sell it!

But really, a laptop is more convenient for my lifestyle provided I don't smash it to bits. And it should be a Mac. A white one because I'm prejudiced against the black ones.

For practical reason, I'd choose a laptop. I can't imagine lugging around a desktop, flight-hopping every week.

For an even more practical reason I'd go for the laptop because it is more expensive than a desktop of similar performance. I'd sell it and buy something else.

If there is no limit on price, then desktop because the world's most expensive desktop far outperforms the best laptop.

Most of the time, the most notable option in selecting desktops over laptops is probably because of gaming needs.

I prefer desktops, but in my situation where I already have a fairly new desktop, I'd go for a laptop because I don't have one and mostly because of the reason above.

Nobody choose the handphone poll option?

Looks like free computers are more in demand than the latest handphones.

Why choose the handphone when one can simply sell away the computer, buy the handphone with the money and still have some cash left over?

I think it wouldn't be nice if that person (most probably relative, boss or friend) that gave you the computer, came over to your house and then found that it has been sold.

No one would be able to afford mine. . .

The PC I want is going to cost about 17k to acquire [http://www.falcon-nw.com/config/build.asp].
The Laptop I want is going to cost at least 8K to acquire.

    Go figure, Falcon Northwest!

Why not just build the desktop yourself? It's what inside that is important, not the name. Granted it's still going to be very expensive, but you'll at least save on the name.

I would pick a laptop. My desktop is by no means top of the line. Still running fine for what I do. Hardly any gaming at all.

For that kind of money I rather get a voodoopc instead. http://www.voodoopc.com/

    Or even Alienware. http://www.alienware.com/main.aspx
