i agree that ah ke was upset, i think it was only ah ke and the older sister of the hunan general sect that was upset. and it was not a joke, at least not how tvb portrayed it. i saw domd 98, the younger sister, shang er, and the girl that likes to play the flute on top of the moutain were gossipping about who WXB did and did not do it with.

How was Jin Yong able to become a popular and successful wuxia novelist after his first major hero was such a dud with readers?

Or, perhaps, Chan Ga Lok was somehow better received by 1950s and 1960s readers than today's readers (different values, etc.)? My father read BOOK & SWORD, and he never discussed any disdain towards Chan Ga Lok.

Another possibility is that B&S wasn't that popular back then (not saying it definitely wasn't; just a hypothesis). Maybe Jin Yong didn't become that popular until after LOCH.

I suspect what Raden Wijaya was trying to say was a slang word, geeze (or sometimes jeeze), which is a bit like saying "oh for Pete's sake" or "for crying out loud" or other similar colloquial expressions of annoyance/dismay. Or for Chinese speakers, "Ai yo!"

Why all the hate-on for Chen Jialuo and Yang Guo? I like both characters because they're flawed personalities. Reading about flawless people would be boring.

I'm re-reading Book & Sword right now and not finding anything particularly reprehensible about CJL, except perhaps his obsession with rescuing WTL at all cost. But I haven't got to the parts about Princess Fragrance yet.

CJL deserves the hate. YG doesn't -- at least not for what the haters hate him for.

Like I said in another thread, I haven't seen a single YG hater express a legitimate reason -- i.e., something supported by the book -- they hate him for yet. It's probably because I haven't been around the wuxia section that much until recently. However, I have already seen plenty of YG hate, just nothing legitimate so far.

When I read Book & Sword the first time a couple of years ago I didn't end up hating CJL. But I'll have to see how I feel about him when I finish reading it again.
