Default Secret of the Treasure Map

Here's my attempt to translate mattmax00's fanfic.

    Ch. 1

It was still before daybreak. A few fishing boats were seen approaching the shore. Some of them were already close to the beach. The joking of the fishermen could be heard while they clean the nets of seaweed. Several children ran towards the boats to help their fathers to unload the fish they caught that night. Life in that fishing village appears peaceful and harmonious. However, men cannot foretell the events that are about to occur.

Suddenly, the peaceful and light-hearted atmosphere was interrupted by the thunderous sound of horses galloping towards the village. The fishermen, assisted by their children, hurriedly pulled their boats to higher ground and immediately ran towards the village filled with curiosity. Arriving at the village, they saw twenty horsemen waiting in the middle of the village.

Seeing that the fishermen have gathered, one of the riders with a large physique dismounted from his horse and asked in a loud voice, “Where is the leader of this village?” The fishermen became quite displeased by the rider’s attitude. One of them walked up and asked, “What brought you to this village, my friend?”

Before the rider answered, a voice barked from the direction of the horsemen. “Don’t ask too much, just point out your leader!”

The fishermen became even more displeased. One of the more impetuous individuals moved to approach the person who just spoke. But before he could step forward, his arm was grasped by a middle-aged man.

He quickly glanced at the man, who then spoke in a quiet voice, “Don’t be overcome with emotion. These people are deliberately causing a commotion.”

He slowly calmed down, and replied, “Thank you for the advice, Sir.”

The man smiled and then walked up towards the group of horsemen. Before he said anything, the burly rider cut in and said, “So you’re the head of the village. It’s really fitting.” This speech was greeted with rowdy laughter from the group of horsemen.

However, the middle-aged man still behaved in a serene manner. After the laughter receded, he announced, “I’m indeed the head of this village. Welcome to our village and I apologize for our lack of hospitality in preparing for you Lords’ arrival.”

The foreigner then answered, “We are boors. We do not need your hospitality. Now, hand over what we want, which is the treasure map of the wealthy Mr. Ciu.”

“Hand it over quickly, or we will look for it ourselves!” shouted one of the other horsemen.

The fishermen were surprised. They were puzzled to hear about the treasure map. One of the fishermen asked, “What treasure map did you mean, Sir? And who is Treasurer Ciu?”

“Don’t pretend ignorance, you smelly fisherman! You think we don’t know that one of you is a descendant of the loathsome Ciu servant,” snapped one of the horsemen.

“Quickly give it to us or the fate of this village will be the same as the other fishing villages.”

The head of the village said, “We really do not know of this Treasurer Ciu’s treasure map that you mentioned, Lord. But about the other fishing villages that you Lords destroyed… we knew about it. So if you don’t believe us, we have no choice but to be discourteous to you all.”

“Fine, if that is what you want. But remember, we do not know mercy. Friends, prepare to make a raid,” said the burly rider.

He unsheathed a large machete and lifted it high. “Because you dared to challenge us, we’ll give you time to prepare your weapons. Remember, don’t try to flee cause… he he he… it’s useless,” he continued with a mocking laugh.

“The women and children, please go into the houses. Lock the doors and don’t let anyone out. Fathers now, let us defend this village and our honor till our last drop of blood,” the village head ordered while rousing the fishermen’s spirits.

“Right, we shall fight the enemies till our deaths!” thundered the fishermen’s cries. They have long realized that there is no other way except to fight the group of horsemen.

Thus the unbalanced battle proceeds. The villagers fought with all their might. But the horsemen were very skilled in martial arts. In a few moments dead bodies filled the streets, all of which were villagers. The spirits of those who survived crumbled and they started to flee. Once they turned their bodies to run, their backs are immediately racked with pain and soon feel nothing, dead.

Has the battle ended? There is still someone fighting. The village head was once a disciple at Shaolin and is fighting a great duel. He handled his staff in the Lohan Staff Style. Many times his staff collided with the machete of the burly rider who is evidently highly skilled in martial arts. While fighting, he looked around at his surroundings and saw a sight that saddened his heart. He tried to control his emotions but couldn’t. Finally, his staff movements became disorderly.

“That’s enough, just kill the village head. How much longer are you going to play with him?” said one of the horsemen.

“Hurry! We still need to raid this village!” shouted another.

The village head’s heart tripped. Apparently the enemy did not show all his skill. He was so furious that he striked his staff to the front. But the enemy moved faster and swung the saber towards his hand. The village head was surprised and tried to pull back his hand. Unfortunately his movement was too late and blood spurted from the arm stump which was chopped off by the machete. The rider did not stop there. He swung his machete forward to behead the opponent. A second later, blood gushed from the neck which is not attached to a head anymore.

After defeating the village head, he cried, “Come, let’s raid this village! When you come across people, kill immediately. Don’t waste time, cause the Boss is very angry. Accomplish this immediately!” He preceded his underlings to approach the nearest house. Braak! With a loud sound, he kicked the door of the house to smithereens. Not long after that, the sound of doors being broken alternate with the heartbreaking cries of women and children. But this is music to the horsemen’s ears.

An hour passed by without notice. All the houses have been searched, but still the treasure map can’t be found.

Finally, the leader said, “Never mind, the map isn’t here. Let’s hurry to burn the village and report to the Boss.” Five minutes later, a thick column of smoke rose to the sky and the peaceful fishing village disappeared. All that’s left are the boats that bear silent witness to the brutality of the group of horsemen.

    Ch. 2

The greed of humankind can often cause people to forget each other. To obtain wealth and prosperity, men will not be reluctant to malign, hurt, or even kill each other. When will people see that their fellow men are more valuable worth than treasures and riches? When can humankind live harmoniously and help each other?

A rider in white clothing raced his horse towards the pillar of smoke.

He drew in a breath, “I’m late again. They are so vicious. What are they looking for? Why do they resort to burning the villages?” Not long after, he arrived at the fishing village. He looked at the corpses lay around with compassion. Without realizing it, his mouth uttered a poem:

    The wind blows gaily
    In the bright, early morn
    The sun shines softly
    On the beautiful, sandy beach
A calm and peaceful scene, I imagine
    Along the sea coast
A tragic and poignant scene, I see
    Of corpses of innocent victims

After his emotions returned to normal, he checked the bodies to see if there’s anyone still breathing. Suddenly, he saw a body that was still moving very weakly. He hurried over and pressed his hand to the back of the person who was already very weak. The person’s eyes opened slowly and his lips moved. The man in white quickly put his ear near the person’s mouth and heard a weak voice saying, “Noble Hero, please help the descendant of the servant of Mr. Ciu. He is at Ting-siu Bun Village. His surname is Lui…” his voice weakened but his eyes anticipated his benefactor’s response. The man in white was very touched and immediately nodded his head. Seeing that, the dying person’s eyes radiated his extreme gratefulness and died with a smile on his lips.

After placing the body on the ground, he continued with his inspection and arrived at a count of 128 corpses including a toddler who was not yet a year old. “Those blasted scum are really not humane,” he said to himself. “More than ten villages have been destroyed. I have to find the culprit and stop this evil deed,” he continued with clenched hands.

With emotions suddenly flaring up, he plucked the sword that hung from his waist and started to swing it around causing a strong gust of wind. People will exclaim in amazement at the beauty and power of the swing of the sword. For indeed in his rage, the man in white displayed an amazing swordplay called the Wind Conqueror Swordplay with as many as 25 steps and numerous changes.

Once he’s done expressing his emotions through his swordplay, the man in white started digging a huge hole in the ground to bury the bodies. One by one he put the bodies in gently while saying “Mercy, mercy.” Two hours later, the man closed the hole and paid his respects one last time. He then mounted his horse and rode away very quickly.

The horseman in white clothes is Hok Wei Nan, a famous swordsman in the martial world. He was almost 40 years old but still looked handsome and dashing. His habit of wearing white clothes and a sword that never left his waist earned him the nickname of the Swordsman in White. People from both the White Gang and the Black Gang have the utmost respect for him because he is always just, defends the truth, and gives criminals the chance to repent. Wei Nan did not have family, martial siblings, or disciples. His teacher was a wandering hero who created a sword technique that contained many changes in response to what type of weapon the opponent is using. This wanderer was called the Wind Conquering Old Eccentric.

Atop his horse, Wei Nan thought hard. After a few months’ investigation of the puzzling and consecutive destruction of multiple fishing villages, he finally had a clue. The destruction wasn’t just a coincidence but planned by a hidden mastermind. And there’s a connection to the servant of Mr. Ciu. Was this the wealthy Mr. Ciu who was rumored to have treasures exceeding that of the Emperor’s? Wei Nan recalled about a great event that occurred decades ago.

Penerangannya hanya remang-remang. Suasananya sunyi.
Pemikiran Wei Nan memang benar sekali.
Maaf saya datang tengah malam. Adik saya sakit dan kelelahan. Kami dari kota mau menuju ke desa, tiba-tiba tadi sore adikku sakit sehingga kami terpaksa berhenti dulu sampai-sampai terlambat tiba di desa. Adakah kamar kosong untuk istirahat?”
”Untunglah kalian berdua bersaudara. Kami tinggal mempunyai sebuah kamar kosong. Mari silahkan masuk”.
    ”Terima kasih”.
Wei Nan segera beranjak keluar ruangan. Baru saja tangannya memegang daun pintu, dia mendengar suara sang gadis.
“Tayhiap, maaf atas ketidaksopananku. Aku sudah ditolong tayhiap tetapi belum mengucapkan terima kasih”.
Segera Wei Nan menjawab,”Tidak masalah nona. Kita hidup harus saling tolong menolong. Jangan panggil aku tayhiap nona. Perkenalkan, namaku Hok Wei Nan”.
Sang gadis tersenyum manis,”Baiklah Hok tayhiap, namaku adalah Sie Ciok Lan. Aku biasa dipanggil Lan-lan”.
“Baiklah Lan-lan. Sekarang kamu makan dulu.
Cinta, banyak orang merasa tabu membicarakan cinta.
’Tayhiap.... Tayhiap....’, suara itu terngiang-ngiang di telinganya.
’Seperti sungguhan saja’, pikir Wei Nan.
’Tayhiap....
Tiba-tiba Wei Nan seperti mendapatkan kembali akal sehatnya.
”Baiklah, kalau begitu kita berangkat sekarang”, sahut Wei Nan.
Dia bangkit berdiri, berjalan menghampiri pemilik penginapan untuk menyelesaikan pembayaran. Lalu bersama Ciok Lan berjalan menuju kuda mereka.
”Dimana tempat tinggalmu Lan-lan? Apakah masih ada sanak saudara disana?”
”Aku tinggal di utara. Tepatnya di desa Bin-siu-bun di lereng gunung Bin-san. Aku tinggal hanya bersama ayahku.

Default English translation of Ch. 3

    Ch. 3

Two hundred years ago, there lived a man named Ciu Po Tin. He was a brave and courageous man who loved antique objects. In his youth, Po Tin once attacked a group of bandit in their hideout at Mount Lok San because he heard that they possessed an antique jade horse that would glow very brightly in the dark. Po Tin also once went to a small, unnamed island populated by scary, wild animals for an antique bluish jade dragon made by a holy personage with jade that is found only on that island. There were many other antiques which he collected, no doubt through many trials and tribulations.

This hobby of collecting antiques was passed down to his son, Gok An. The Ciu family’s collection of antiques kept on increasing, from decorations to inherited weapons. This news quickly spread in the martial world. Many wanted to possess these antiques, but the Ciu family refused to sell anything. This caused them to be harassed by both the White Group and the Black Group. Fortunately, the Ciu family is skilled in martial arts and has loyal servants. These servants are like personal bodyguards as well because they’ve been well-trained in martial arts by Ciu Po Tin.

Amongst them, there are four of the Ciu family’s most trusted servants. They were adopted by Ciu Po Tin in his travels in search of antiques. Each of them was given a name according to the area where Po Tin found them; Lui Pak (Lui of the North), Yo Lam (Yo of the South), Siu See (Siu of the West), and Hui Thong (Hui of the East). They each have a son who’s around the same age as Gok An, such that the boys are like brothers to Gok An. Po Tin himself did not differentiate between Gok An and his servants’ children.

Gok An’s son, Tian Sin, was not really into antiques other than treasures and jewelry. It was when Tian Sin became famous that the Ciu family became even wealthier. It was a pity that Tian Sin’s son, Kong Bin, had a weak body and thus could not train in profound martial arts. Once when Tian Sin went to Mount Co-san to rid of the criminal group Co-san Pang, he chanced across a wandering nomad. Because he was friendly by nature, Tian Sin soon befriended the nomad who had already forgotten his own name. Before parting, the nomad advised Tian Sin to be careful because he saw a dark shadow on Tian Sin’s face.

Once he finished his business in Mount Co-san, Tian Sin returned home. In his house, Tian Sin remembered the nomad’s words and pondered upon it. Seeing that something was not right with their master, the four servants asked him what troubled him since he returned from Mt. Co-san. Since their relationships were like brothers, Tian Sin unreservedly told them about the nomad’s words. Lui Pak suggested that Tian Sin heed those words and be careful. Siu See agreed with this and reminded Tian Sin that their strength has waned. Moreover, their children did not have the talent to learn profound martial arts skills.

Yo Lam suggested that they hide the entire collection of Ciu family treasure in a safe place. Tian Sin thought of a suitable location and told the others. The four servants agreed and started to move the treasure there. After this was done, a map was made and kept by Tian Sin himself. Tian Sin actually did not agree to this. He wanted the map to be divided into five pieces such that each of them could keep one piece. However, the four servants refused.

    Default Ch. 8

    Ch. 8
    ”Baiklah tayhiap”.
”Oh, ya, Ciok Lan, tolong jangan panggil aku tayhiap lagi. Rasanya risih mendengar panggilan itu.”
”Lalu aku harus memanggil tayhiap apa?” Ciok Lan bertanya.
Muka Wei Nan langsung memerah.
”Kalau begitu, silahkan tayhiap memilih. Kuda kami bagus-bagus semua. Kuat dan cocok untuk perjalanan jauh”.
Setelah bertanya mengenai kuda yang paling jinak tetapi kuat, akhirnya Wei Nan memutuskan untuk membeli seekor kuda betina berwarna coklat. Selesai melakukan pembayaran, pedagang kuda itu bertanya,
”Memangnya tayhiap mau melakukan perjalanan jauh?”
”Ah tidak, kami hanya mau mengunjungi saudara jauh saja”, jawab Wei Nan cepat. ”Terima kasih pak, hari sudah mulai siang. Kami harus melanjutkan perjalanan lagi”.
”Terima kasih kembali tayhiap.
Lalu si pedagang bersama pelayan-pelayannya bergerak menuju ibukota. Selama pembicaraan itu berlangsung Ciok Lan hanya menunduk saja. Sikapnya malu-malu. Itu semua karena dipesan oleh Wei Nan.
Lalu mereka melanjutkan pembicaraan. Sepanjang perjalanan mereka saling menceritakan pengalaman masing-masing.
Menjelang sore, Wei nan berkata, ”Sudah sore, Lan-Mei.
”Aku setuju, Nan-Ko. Pinggangku sudah mau patah rasanya,” jawab Ciok Lan sambil tertawa.
    ”Mau balapan, Lan-Mei?”
”Siapa takut? Ayo, satu...dua...tiga..,” Ciok Lan menghitung dengan cepat. Tanpa menunggu jawaban dari Wei Nan, ia memacu kudanya.
”Hahaha....
Julukannya Pek-I Kiam-Hiap.
