    Default Interview with levendis d'orange

    1. Where do you live (state, country, etc.)?

I live in Orange County, California.

    2. What is your real life occupation?

Currently, I'm working part-time as a college admission outreach coordinator and struggling heroically against the dark forces of procrastination to finish my master thesis in public health.

    3. Besides moderating spcnet, what else do you do in your pastime?

Gambling, mainly poker (cash games) and crap (in Vegas only because you can't throw dices in California casinos, weird huh). Watching TV, or rather, downloaded shows from HBO and Showtimes (the Wire which is simply the best show ever; Weeds with its quirky black humour; Generation Kill is developing nicely; Entourage, the guys' equivalent of Hannah Montana but it's fun and flashy).

Also love to read. Currently reading "The World without Us"; it's a thought-provoking exploration on our civilization and its ecological impact, and what would the planet looks like without any human. If you have to read one non-fiction book this year, this is it. The true value of this book wasn't the idea of "what if humans were gone" but the range of topics on nature, physics, farming & others. For example, before this book I had never heard of the Belaveskaya Pushcha, the last primeval forest or how Rothamsted Manor is still used to research the effects of soil additives/pollution centuries after Laws patented fertilizer. I also found interesting the detail on the US Dept of Energy's Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP), the effects of the Korea DMZ on wildlife, reasons how large predators like sharks can outnumber fish on Kingman reef and the ecological differences in settled vs. more mobile Kenyan tribes. You can read the "polymers are forever chapter" on this site:
    http://www.worldwithoutus.com/toc.html

I'm also following several Vietnamese translation of Chinese wuxia novels online. Kim Dung and Co Long cast a large shadow over the kiemhiep landscape, but a few recent works by upcoming writers are quite good. Most notable are "Con Luan" and "Thuong Hai" by Phuong Ca, "Anh Hung Chi" by Ton Hien, and "Cực Phẩm Gia Đinh" by Vu Nham. "Tru Tien" by Tieu Dinh has a promising first half, but the second half failed to deliver on a massive scale; epic fail!

Oh yeah, and hiking. My gf loves to go hiking so she drags me to the parks and hiking trails almost everyday. It's sickening.

    4. What is your motto as a moderator?

"What would spcnet do?"; then do the opposite

    5. What is significant about your username and avatar?

levendis is a name of a character from Harlan Ellison's wonderful short story, "The man who rowed Columbus ashore". My writing style is heavily influenced by his works.

    6. Name five characteristics about you.

    capricious, conspicuous, cruel, cunning, cunnilingus

    7. What is one unique thing about you?

I try to do one good thing per day, every single day. Failing that, give one bad advice every day, every single day.

    8. What is the most adventurous thing you’ve ever done?

    Sold ecstasy in college.

    9. Which is the funniest prank played on you or played by you?

So a few months ago I wanted to treat Lady Orange to a nice dinner at an upscale steakhouse in town for our anniversary. Knowing how busy they got I called in the morning but they were completely booked so they put my name on the waiting list in case somebody canceled (and to make things worse I was SECOND on the waiting list which meant TWO people would have to cancel!). Long story short I called in a favor from a friend who pretended to be delivering flowers to a "Pemberly Lee" at the restaurant around lunch time (since he acted in college and was a salesman as a profession he relished the opportunity). When there wasn't a Pemberly Lee he acted confused, said he might have the wrong name and asked to see the reservation list thinking he might have come a little early. Then he decided someone screwed up and took his leave. He then called me with three names from the reservation list so I called over the course of the next two hours using three different voices as those people canceling their reservation. Lo, and behold, half an hour later I got a call from the matire'd saying that I was incredibly lucky and three people canceled! What a coincidence!

    10. Who is your favorite spcnet member(s)? Why?

Her name is Yvonne, and she broke my heart.

    11. As far as I’m concerned, Brangelina’s chemistry is nothing compared to Levenberly. ™ - What's sup' with this ‘love and hate’ between you and Pemperly?

The truth is that Pemberly is secretly in love with me, but since I'm already taken, she's driven mad with jealousy and thus devoted most of her time stalking me on the net. Not that I don't like Pemberly, mind you. She's smart, sassy and isn't afraid to speak her mind. She's the kind of feminists that shaves her legs and wears deodorant and doesn't give feminism a bad names. Besides that, she has a great set of rack. Anyhow, pemberly keeps wanting for us to hook up in Vegas but I've so far been able to say not, but my resolve is weakening.

    12. How are things different now than when you first joined the forum?

I used to post more; my absence has resulted in an obvious decline in quality of the forum.

Dearest Levi, I honestly don't know what to say about you, lol. Reading your responses brought tears of laughter, because you’re seriously one funny dude. It’s amazing how fast time has gone by and how much things have changed in the last few years since the last exchange. Once again, thank you for your time.

One word after reading Levendis d'orange's reponses...scary!

I'm sorry, Lev is just not my kind of funny.

Although, I am very, very interested in 'The World without Us'. I will definitely check that out. Thanks Lev!

However, it was unfortunate that the whole thing ended (as in response to #12) negatively. As in, a negative generalisation.

Thank you, Bellay. I'm glad you've caught Sir Orange (by the neck) to do this interview.

These interviews are pretty neat, thanks Bella!

I gotta say Levendis, you are quite the comedian. And I find it quite fascinating how you can read English and Vietnamese books simultaneously, you must be well fluent in both!

P.S. Bella, have you ever thought of interviewing just regular folks so we all can get to know each other better?

P.P.S. I'm not referring myself for an interview!

Default Interview with Pemberly a.k.a Pembie

    1. Where do you live (state, country, etc.)?

I was born, grew up, and currently reside in the metro Boston area, USA.

    2. What is your real life occupation?

I do Marketing for an MNC. It's not as exciting or high paying as it sounds.

    3. Besides moderating spcnet, what else do you do in your pastime?

I'm a pretty dull person. I spend copious amounts of time in front of the television watching trashy reality shows. I also play kyodai, knit, bake, play mahjong, watch tv serials, and listen to music. I am an old lady. I used to go to the gym everyday, but I've been lazy lately. Occasionally, I'll go out to dinner, play pool, or sing karaoke with friends. I'm considering joining a kung fu class. That might just be because the Beijing Olympics have temporarily imbued me with this strange longing to be "more Chinese." Also, I've always liked to read books that most people find boring. My favorite authors include Jane Austen, Victor Hugo, and Alexander Dumas. I just finished The Man Who Laughs. I also have a thing for buying antique books. I have several that are about a hundred years old.

    4. What is your motto as a moderator?

I'm not sure if these Chinese characters will show up.

    有 恩 不 報 未 算 差, 有 仇 不 報 正 人 渣
I've unabashedly stolen it from Dayo Wong in Men Don't Cry. Seriously though, I just try to not be so serious. I'm a pretty lenient moderator and I try to let everyone have their fun, so long as they don't go overboard.

    5. What is significant about your username and avatar?

I've actually had my username for the better part of a decade. It's been so long that many of my real life friends call me pem, pembie, eliza pembs, etc. My Swedish friends call
me Pärm. I initially used it as my college email address. Using one's real name is pretty boring, but the school told us to not pick anything embarrassing. I thought email address, hmmm....it'd be cool if my address were Pemberley (from Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen). And the limit was 7 characters, so I dropped the superfluous "e."

My avatar is a pic of Shin Hyesung from the Shinhwa. No real significance. I was thinking of changing it.

    6. Name five characteristics about you.

A few people I've talked to from spcnet have used these three words: cute, witty, weird. I'm not sure I totally agree with all three. My own two would be lazy and mellow.

    7. What major risks have you taken in your life? When talk about risk-taking, are you Ms. Daredevil or Ms. Avoid-it-all?

I'm pretty middle of the road. I've never been sky diving or bungee jumping or eaten scorpions, but I do ride the occasional roller coast and am willing to try new foods and activities. If I had the money, I'd be willing to travel to all the far corners of the earth.

    8. If you can punk one Spcnet member, who would it be? And why?

I'd like to punk someone who is normally pretty serious. My choice would have been Ken Cheng, except he seems to be going through a strange mid-life crisis right now, and I probably don't want to agitate him anymore. He might go postal on me. Possibly Han Solo or Suet Seung. I'd be too scared to attempt spcnet.

    9. Which is the funniest prank played on you or played by you?

Last year, I started talking to a friend of a friend on gchat. He saw that my name was elizapemberly, and commented that it was a weird name for an Asian girl. I told him not to
assume things, and convinced him that I'm really white, named Elizabeth Pemberly, and immigrated from England. A few of my other friends helped me keep up the charade. He invited me to a party at his house, and boy was he surprised when he saw me!

    10. If you could go back in time to meet any one person who ever lived, who would it be and why?

I think it'd be really neat to meet one of the emperors of the Tang dynasty. I want to know what it's like to have all that power, riches, and anything else you want. It was so long ago and it seemed like a time of prosperity. I want to know how it feels to have people bow down before you and tremble when you are angry.

    11. The incessant bickering between you and levendis d'orange produced some of Spcnet's most memorable moments. If we were to put the two of you in a room together, what would happen?

Not much. The old man and I have actually known each other for some time, since we both have been on spcnet for many many moons. In real life, we don't really bicker. He thinks I'm too capitalistic and I think he's a hippy, but we don't really argue like in the threads. That probably just started on a whim and we ran with it. We don't really talk much anymore, so we're just using posts to be irreverent and to attempt to entertain others with our little comedy act. Sorry to disappoint you all. No mortal combat. If there were, I'd totally win because Orange is a very skinny Vietnamese man.

    12. How are things different now than when you first joined the forum?

When I first joined, there were fewer forums and I wasn't a mod. In fact, there was only one moderator: the all powerful Jennifer! hee hee. And most of the regulars from back in the day are gone now.

Yes. As a matter of fact, I’d this same thought today while driving in a middle of no where. There are just so many interesting regulars here that I'm sure people would love to know a little bit more about. However, it is a project that I will hopefully convince Ceddie to do, since I won't be here much longer.

We would love to hear from you, Boo.

Great minds think alike Plus you always say what's on my mind in other threads, it's so phenomenal.

I don't think you or Ceddie should do an interview on me, I'm very boring. I haven't posted in this forum in years! I do drop by once in a while but never say anything, because I'm so boring

sueti, you could have done a sista a favor and correct the mistake. anyhow, i've always spelled pembie's name that way. I suppose, I will just stick to Pembie from now on.

Speaking of which, thanks for your responses, Pembie. I enjoyed reading em'.

lol. you know, for a second there, I thought you were a newbie. But you're actually a veteran! Welcome back! I keep hearing the old-timers say, the reason that they left the forum is because the quality of the forum has declined. Thus, it's nice to see someone coming back. You will definitely be on the list then.

What sort of Kung Fu would you be interested in? If you're serious, I reccommend starting with an 'internal form' (e.g. TaiChi) then moving onto an 'external form'. As much as it is part of Wuxia fiction ideas too, I believe realistically, it is the way to go...at least to improve the general state of your fitness first, body awareness, and to prevent against injury. I went the other way, and it hasn't been good.

    That's just my opinion though.

"more Chinese"...that hit me in the 1st year of my 1st degree. Always a 1st for everything .

Depends which emperor you meet. Not all of them were really that effective as rulers.

I imagine it was more a respect for the culture/laws that had people kow towing to the emperor, and also the threat of execution if one did not observe such protocol that made them tremble.

Geez...either the past discussion on spcnet must've been really good, or the present must be really bad. Didn't know such a sentiment was a commonality among "old-timers".

Sad really, because I've surely had some intellectual and meaningful discussions on spcnet...otherwise, I wouldn't have joined in the first place, nor returned for that matter. But then, I believe in quality over quantitiy.
