Have you tried looking into the old classics like The Three Kingdoms? There is some added fiction but a good bit of it is fairly historic. It doesn't read like a wuxia novel, but it does have people being cut in half and the theme of heroic brotherhood and loyalty that seems to run through most wuxia novels. It is quite a commitment since it is about 120 chapters. The translation available from Foreign Language Press is full of endnotes that reference several different editions of the same source material. Apparently there is as much history to the telling of the story as there is to the characters and time period.

Hope that helps a little, though I have the feeling that I have gone too far back in time for what you are looking for.

There are a few books about Miyamoto Musashi on Amazon. I haven't really looked around too much. I haven't been on this site too long, so I am still trying to read all I can for free before I start looking elsewhere.

I haven't gotten to look at the links you posted because I have been a little busy, but I look forward to the time when I can.

I think the copy of 3 Kingdoms you ordered is the edition I got. It is the source material for the new John Woo movie Red Cliffs. Maybe we will see that on DVD in the west in the next couple of years.

Another place to look is "Heroes of the Water Margin" also translated by Pearl Buck as "All Men are Brothers". It is the Chinese version of Robin Hood, similarly based on oral histories and folk traditions. A number of portions of it have been turned into movies. How much is fact, how much fiction is a good question, but that there is fact in there somewhere is pretty well verified.

Water Margin/ Heroes of the Marsh/ All men Are Brothers/ Outlawss Of the Marsh-- I think there are more titles to the same story floating around. At any Rate, a four volume set is available from Foreign language press that is similar to what I think you ended up with in Three Kingdoms. Once Again, I got mine there. Fun Cliffhanger endings to all the chapters. You may want to take notes- there is a ridiculous number of major characters, and some are important in the beginning and important in the end wnd do not show up for the middle thousand pages.

It is a quicker read than Three Kingdoms because it is not so broken up by footnotes and is broken into much shorter episodes.

People in ancient China had a tendency to mix up facts with myths so it's very hard or impossible to know about the real events that happened during the lives of famous martial artists. However if you're interested in discovering the history of Chinese martial arts I'd suggest that you google with the following keywords: Xingyiquan, Baguazhang, Taijiquan, Yue Fei (one of the greateast Chinese generals, the founder of Xingyiquan), Ji Longfeng, Li Luoneng, Sun Lutang, Wang Shujin, Chen Wangting, Yang Luchan, Wu Jianquan, Huo Yuanjia, Wang Ziping, Qi Jiguang (a national hero of China, the person who created the base for Taijiquan),...
